The layout from 2002-present wasn’t shorter because of the changes to the pit lane exit, it was because the turn 10 hairpin was moved 30 metres closer to the previous chicane to increase the amount of runoff the hairpin had

Only problem the start finish was after the hairpin pre-87 and the lead up to what is now turn 1 was different. I'm guessing that layout wasn't available
