I Added a note to the video, as Google has dropped the pricing on Drive, $1.99f for 100GB, a big drop$9.99 for a TB Kind of kicks Dropbox to the curb if you are paying!
Steve is extremely good in explaining things such as the difference between drop box and google. It is nice to have some one who talks in away that even a 72 year old understands and feels more like enjoying all the new electronic. Thanks Steve
Steve, I stumbled onto your channel. Your presentation, quality of content, and obvious experience is highly appreciated. I remain amazed at the level of motivation and willingness to create and share this type of content. Thank you for your contributions.
its good to see that youtubers are not just 20-somethings.. As much as i do enjoy my gaming channels i want to say that i liked this vid, and also subbed your channel. videos laid out in a very neat format and simple enough for a beginner to understand. Thumbs up and keep them coming DottoTech ! :D
Thank you so much for this video. The "which one should I choose" problem is a big one, with all the services and choices today. Another one I would love to see is a video about Evernote vs MS Onenote. There is a tough choice to. Both is very good, and since I moved to Evernote I still miss some things in Onenote and vice versa.
Nice review of both services. Just some things that I learned from using both: 1. Google Drive does not have a Linux client as yet but Dropbox does. This may not be an issue for some people but it was a problem for me and I am still waiting for them to add Linux support. 2. Google Drive allows you to easily revise who can edit, download or view a file after you have shared it. 3. Google Drive ties in nicely with Gmail allowing you to attach a Drive file to an email.
One thing you don't show... Dropbox allows you to selective sync individual folders throughout your folder tree. Google Drive only allows you to selective sync the top level folders (which syncs all the subfolders below it). So, for example, if your Top Level folder says "Photos" and below that you have Sub-Folders by year (2014, 2013, 2012, etc), in Google Drive you can only share all photos or none. In Dropbox I could select one specific year and have it ignore the others. I like feature in Dropbox that because I want to keep all my photos under the "photos" folder but I only want the 2014 photos on my computer. This is the SOLE reason why I have selected Dropbox. Otherwise, I'd select Google Drive.
I used Dropbox mainly, but switched to Drive a while ago. Two things that Dropbox do better is, each file in Dropbox is backed up. so even if you overwrite or delete. you can get it back through the web. Second is that dropbpx is more widespread and supported in third party applications, it is also has native clients on more places. For example linux.
Dropbox advantage: Videolan for ipad works with both Dropbox and Google Drive. While the latter displays all your videos alphabetically, it is unable to display the folders they sit in. Dropbox does, and beautifully so, I might say.
Hi Steve. Thanks for the video. I have a question. Not sure if it has been discussed here before. How can I use Gdrive/dropbox as an online back-up only without creating a copy in my system's hard disk? I dont want to move my files from my computer instead have original in my system and one back up online. Thanks!
While Google Drive beats Dropbox on the price. Dropbox far outshines it with respect to syncing speed and the computer resources it uses. If your just using the free account this most likely makes no difference BUT if you have a lot of data to sync then Dropbox is far superior. I needed to sync about 100 Gigs and started with Google Drive. It took forever and Gdrive continuously ran and used about 50$ of my computer resources, so it really slowed down my computer. I switched to Dropbox and moved my files and folders from GDrive to Dropbox and the difference is amazing. Dropbox uses practically no resources and it's syncing speed far outshines GDrive. I suggest you do a search for sync speed and Google Drive and you will find all kinds of people who gave up on Gdrive because of the speed and the effect it had on there computer.
Excellent, thanks. 3 questions: 1st how do I install Drive on my imac? 2nd, if I install google drive on my computer is it also installing Google Photos on my computer or is that a different process? 3rd, how do I save a document to both my computer and drive instead of having it only in the cloud? Thanks again
I just thought its worth mentioning if you cancel the drive subscription im assuming everthing would be lost on drive or would it appear again on renewal of subscription???. I hope this is not a dumb post
Steve cleared up exactly what I'm trying to find out. As a real estate agent, I have a bunch of folders on my server filled with info on listings, former listings, prospects, and client information. I've been tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to upload it all to Drive, Dropbox, or Evernote. Thanks to Steve, I'll use Google Drive as my main storage area with templates for mailmerge and all the rest. Then I'll set up individual acttive listing/ active client folders to share the info I've gathered on an individual or property. I doubt if I'll even need more than the 3 or 4 gig of free storage I've already got with Dropbox, but since I can get 500 K more with everyone I get to sign up to Dropbox and since it is the main way of keeping open communications with customers and clients, I think I'll easily keep ahead of space problems. Especially if I remove the folder when each deal is finished.
THANK YOU!!! I teach in a Homeschool co-op and have just been trying to determine the difference between these two things. Your video made so much sense!
Great review and as a Free Dropbox user, I nearly signed up for the 1Tb Google Drive account...but...Google Drive (and MS OneDrive for that matter) neglect (so far) to do just one essential thing I need from a cloud storage storage provider that Dropbox actually does: to selectively sync SUBFOLDERS! I'm sure Google & MS will catch up with this feature one day but until then, Dropbox have my money.
I'm paying for 100GB on GDrive right now, but I'm going to choose Dropbox Pro with 1TB instead. Dropbox is simply more robust than GDrive. When we change proxys or the internet disconnects, the Dropbox client responds much quicker, while the GDrive client stalls. Also, when using auto-upload from my phone, the photos in GDrive end up in Google Photos, but in the desktop I can't find a way to organize them in folders easily. In Dropbox it's really easy. I'm a Picasa / G+ Photos user for many years, but as far as I tried, Dropbox also has some really nice tools for photos and videos.
~ 9:00 ... don't forget to mention, that G-Drive documents don't need any space on your account... ;-) a question... is it now possible, with Dropbox, that you can give just for subfolders "certen rights" (reading or writing rights) to members of your group? ... 'cos this was the main reason, why we (our assosiation) changed to G-Drive...
Great point Sabel, thanks for that! You can certainly share a folder. And using the Web app you can assign individual rights, so I THINK it will do what you want!
Yes for "one" folder... the main folder... I thought about the sub-folders... For example... - main association (folder) - Our own Team (folder) in both are many sub-folders... and if you need to work with someone else (for graphic stuff, pictures, ec.ec.), who is not in the daily board of the "main association", you surely don't want to share all "sub-folders" with critical informations with this person... so in G-Drive you can give him/her only the rights for the sub-folder he/she needs... Or lets say, the marketing guy... don't need the right to write in the folder of the event coordinator guy... with Dropbox this wasn't possible... only for the main folder... at least ~ one year ago...
Thanks. Got a question: is there a way to download links/shortcuts instead of my entire Google Drive? I have 13GB of files on my GD but I don't want it to download the files onto my computer. just the shortcuts. is that possible? thanks
I just downloaded the Google Drive Mac App and you can share directly from your Google Drive folder. Go to your file, highlight, and then two finger click on the track pad. Then go to the Google Drive option and share. No need to go to Web. Currently moving my files from Dropbox to Google Drive!!
Good review. To me, they're two different animals. Dropbox is great for backups, iOS integration with other apps, and their public URL can't be beat. I use their iPad client all the time for reviewing documents, giving presentations, and uploading and archiving all my iOS pictures. Dropbox also has iterative backups. This means I can go back to a version I uploaded a month ago and find it. Google Drive has the best collaboration apps available anywhere. In my workflow, you need both.
If I correctly understand what you're saying around 6:10, you say that the more you sync, the more you use out of your quota. Per my understanding, that does not affect your usage. What you have on the "Google Drive" is what you have, the only difference is whether I see it as a local folder on my hard drive. For example, say that in my Google Drive I have "Vacation 2013" folder, that I want to make available for offline on my home computer only, and "Invoices" that I want to make available for offline on my office computer, I will sync them accordingly. The fact that I sync some folders with some computers and other folders with other computers does not change the fact that on the "Google Drive" itself all of them are counted as part of my used space. Correct me if I misunderstood something.
I am sxo excited about how much mzore I understand this process. It is so helpful and I never had a clue how useful this would be for not only my business but for multiple other things in my everyday life. Thanks. Shelley ; owner of Impulsive Image.
Having issues In mobile drive. The videos that I send to friends is requiring a google sign in. Ive change my settings to the individual who I sent to - to have viewing rights but still they are prompt to sign in. I'm not having this much trouble with Dropbox.
What is involved in changing from one online backup service to another, after being with one for several years & through more than a couple of computers? Their tech support is non-existent as is most support-after-purchase, or if there is a problem not created by the customer/end user. What do you suggest?
Good question, and I am not sure how best to answer you. Switching online backups should be pretty easy, unless you do not have a local backup as well, if you don't you need to make one, then use that archive as a base for your new service. I suggest you always have local and online backup of your important data.
I use folder sync to backup full resolution photos to GDrive and let Google+ auto backup smaller resolution for web sharing (standard 2048px). Also use Folder sync to auto backup instagram photos to Gdrive. However, looking into see what Carousel from drop box is all about.
I have both, actually I have three, One Drive (Skydrive), Dropbox, and Google Drive. Dropbox will give you more data if you use the online website and click on share more space. I add to at least two computer, two tablets and my phone so I go 100GB for free for a year. Now I got 48GB left for a year. Plus with Dropbox you can share files and folders with others. I save a few digital files with my family that are 2-3GB in size.
*So which is better, Google Drive or Dropbox?* At about 07:13 Steve talks about how sharing is better with Dropbox. At the time of this video being made this was certainly true on the Mac but on Windows, Google Drive is arguably even better again. In a similar way to Dropbox, if you right click the file (in Google Drive on your PC not the web) you will see an option for "Google Drive" which expands to give you further options. One of the options is share, except instead of just copying the address to your clipboard it brings up a share dialogue which lets you share with other Gmail users by name and specify what permissions they have with that file such as; View only or Edit. You can specify non gmail users too, either way it has the option to notify them by email and an option to write a custom message...negating the need to use any other email system. And if you do wish to share it via a third party email system or via Social Media it does display the link for you to manually copy to the clip board. #GoogleDrive #dropbox #cloudstorage
Family office 365 account 6 installs of office plus 1tb of OneDrive each account for about £8 a month is a much better deal, I can’t see a use for Dropbox anymore?
1. Will Google drive drop photos as you take them like Dropbox does? 2. Will files that are stored in GDrive update automatically as I add to them with MS WORD
There is actually a direct way to share file from the GDrive folder on the local hard drive. Just right-click the desired file or folder. In the contextual menu there is a GDrive option. Hover over it and in the fly-out menu is the Share option. It works exactly the same as if one were online.
I completely agree with your entire synopsis.I also use both Google Drive and Dropbox but for some reason which I cannot explain, I prefer using Dropbox so that is my main online storage. The fact that Dropbox also gives free storage for signing onto your account from select mobile devices is also a big win for me cos it greatly extends the free space you have available. Many apps also support Dropbox and not Google Drive so that also adds convenience somewhat ;)
Nice video! What does happen when you decide to don't renew your Dropbox storage plan? What can you do with all the files that you have storage there so far? Tks
+Luis Felipe Grandi Massola The files are only syncing to Dropbox, they still live on your computer. You should back them up to an external hard drive, ideally at least 2 external drives in case one fails. You can sync to external drives using software like Synctoy or Allway Sync. If you sync on a regular basis it's a good backup. Dropbox automates it so you don't have to think about it. If you discontinue Dropbox you just have to do it on your own, on some kind of regular basis.
Thanks so much for the wealth of knowledge that you've supplied us with. I am currently helping a friend set up her new business ventures Webpage and Blog and I have used G Drive for everything from the Graphics and visual's for social media to the mail merges and Client diary synch to her android tablet! It's a fantastic product with the office package being able to convert outside documents coming in too! I really must thank you again for the fantastically open and easy to understand media you're sharing ... You've just saved us a whole load of misunderstood options and we feel quite enabled and equipped!
Best way to share with Google Drive is to download the document and drag to wherever you need it to go...Sharing especially when the person you have to share with and they need to share with another can be a pain in the butt.
Good explanation Dotto!! Me from Dominican Republic. I think so. The easy Sharing feature of droppbox is incredible, but the plus tools end the search feature of GDrive is Excellent!!
Why is it every time I try to send a file it’s always problematic the other side can’t open it up I don’t get notifications that it’s been sent it’s not the best app I have difficulties with it which video would you recommend I watch of yours I use an iPad
Great info, as always, Steve. I have 2 quick questions. I noticed the comment that indicated that GD converts files to their format from MS, is that correct? Also, with either service, when you sink files to the Desktop for convenience, those files then consume the memory of your laptop/PC etc., correct?
Great video. I learned a great deal. I am trying to upload and share 4gb video on google drive but it doesn’t go through, it gets suck like at 14 minutes to finish Any suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated it.
hi you have said that evernote is not the most secure place to store confidential info -- is dropbox safe to store bank statements , tax returns etc which show ss# etc ?? And I watched your video on going paperless ----- so where do you personally store such items thanks
+Chris Zecca I would personally say that those documents should not be in synced notebooks but stored on local notebooks, in Evernote. I do not think Dropbox would be classified as secure.
Steve, have you had any issues running both Dropbox and GDrive apps on your computer? I'm curious how you compare them in their syncing efficiency. I realize that might open a can of worms, since it is partially dependent on your ISP and computer model. But assuming one has a fast computer and internet connection, how do the apps compare? I used both for a couple years, but the GDrive app used to wrestle primacy every time it synced, interrupting whatever task I was doing. So, I dumped the app and managed GDrive through the web interface. NOW, the Dropbox app gives me problems, frequently indexing and hogging CPU power. Furthermore, if Time Machine and Dropbox often tend to run simultaneously, which causes my computer to run significantly slower. I'll probably have to keep both Dropbox and GDrive accounts, but I'm considering switching back to GDrive, in terms of the app installed, in hopes that some bugs have been worked out. What has been your experience? Can they coexist?
Thanks Steve. Is is true that the recipient of a video sent from Google Drive needs a Google Account to view it? Also quality of video appears poor compared with Dropbox. Any reason for this?
dottotech Thanks. Yes user, of course, needs Google Account. However, if I share a video file with someone who does not have a Google Account, they are unable to view the file. With Dropbox I do not have that problem - the recipient of the file does not need a Dropbox Account to view the file. Useful sometimes.Wonderful tutorials Steve, well presented, thanks.
dottotech I got 50GB of bonus space storage on dropbox when I bought a galaxy s3 from amazon, BUT it's limited for 2 years, so now I wanna know what's happening when this offer comes to end AND i'm using pretty much more space than the free plan ? they will give me some time to get my files out or they will delete them !
Steve,....admire your honesty. Thanks for the straight up approach. I give you 2 thumbs up my friend. I have used Dropbox and it seems easy enough. Now I will explore Google Drive. Thank You Again !!!
Do you know if there is a way to set password protection on folders in either DropBox or Google Drive. For example, I may have a primary folder and in that folder I may have multiple sub-folders. I may want to share each sub-folder with different people and don't want the wrong person to access the wrong folder. Are there any cloud services that offer these features?
Hi Steve i'm using Google drive in my iphone currently running on ios version 11.2.1. i need to password protect my Google drive and Google photos. But when ever i try to lock my Google drive by going to the settings its mentioned currently it's not available. can you help me out.?
Great job in the video, as usual! I am using Google drive but I'm having difficulty syncing it back to the folder I uploaded it from. Do I have to put my office network
Hi Steve After failure of a Seagate GoFlex BackUp Drive & total lack of any kind of support from them I have been looking for free online backup programs simply to backup my documents, photographs & music collection & have already downloaded DropBox & backed up my Documents (63Mb). After finding out that the photographs take up 5Gb & Music collection a further 27Gb, I have been looking for other free backup programs & did download Mega which has 50Gb of storage but could not get it to work. So I was quite pleased to find your most informative U-Tube video comparing Dropbox & Googlebox. I intend to use other programs One Drive (15Gb) & pCloud (10Gb) to back up the music collection after a bit of trimming & splitting files & then thanks to your video Googlebox for the pictures & the cut down versions of Office Products. Thanks again
Allan Edlington Sorry to hear of your crashes, I would caution you that I really don't consider Drive or Dropbox to be complete BackUp solutions, and even though you have had a bad experience please still use a local backups drive!
so how do i store in just a local mailbox in evernote? Also if the computer goes bad and lose info ? i had a bunch of stuff on a mac pro laptop and the hard drive got corrupted and i lost all info --- a recovery company was able to get some info back but lost a bunch of pics etc ---- Trying to go paperless -- watched your video on this - very good by the way ! any other videos on going paperless u recommend ?
+Chris Zecca You still need to have a backup! we havea webinar this coming week that will teach you the basics of going paperless app.webinarjam.net/register/711/8f6a7c5931
as a programmer, i see google drive is really difficult to integrate our app or website to. dropbox has very straight forward sdk to help us interact with their api (upload, download, search files) while in google drive, i haven't really found any tutorial about it. the documentation is also hard to understand for basic programmer like me. if anyone reading this and actually find google drive api is really easy to you, you can let me know where do i start learning it. thank you :D
In my opinion, working with small data (20mb for example) google wins, but if you work with big archives (500mb to more) Drop box wins, main reason for me is, if you upload a 500 mb that take 2 hour for example and then you delete it by mistake, in dropbox you can paste again and only goin to indexing the file,( 30 seconds insted of the 2 hours). this is the main reason of my preference od drop box.
+Abel Quintanilla Wouldn't that mean your file isn't deleted at all? If you delete something by accident, it goes to the trash in both services. You just need to open the trash folder and 'undelete' it.
Another great video! Thanks for clearing up the comparison for me. I have both free drives, but I haven't really tapped into their functionality yet. That's going to change now. Good work and cheers to you 🍺!
Hello ! I just started using Google Drive. There few things I do not understand on the sync. part. I have 2 computers and it seams like if I work on my Google drive on one of my mac Pro, it doesn't sync. on both of them. Is their something I missed on sync ? Also with the Pages Files, I can not do anything with them.
DropBx can use any mail-address, Gdrive needs a gmail account as far as I know. so you can use a "general" mailadress (eg info@etc..) to create a DropBox and share items with several people, including you personal mail-address. So you cna reall seperate your own DropBox, shielded from other users.
I keep finding gems on your page. Thanks for the information. I just downloaded Google Drive as a back up to my files and pics besides my external storage. Thanks Steve!
no matter what i do, drop box will not let me drag and drop from the cloud to my pc, desktop, folders, etc... how come i cant put these files in a folder on my desktop?? its backup files for my android
This is an excellent comparison of two good products. Within the Drive web interface, there is a Share icon (the person+ icon) at the top when you select a file or folder, so that at least eliminates one click. As a regular user of both Dropbox and Google Drive, I find that my Drive is more active and generally open. As a result, I don't often find myself needing to share a file when I am not already in Google Drive. Now that the school where I teach is transitioning to 1:1 with Chrome Books, I suppose that would have made the choice for me anyway. It is also important to note that files created within Drive (docs, sheets, and slides) do not count toward storage space.
If you have been trying to decide on online storage and are torn between Google Drive or Dropbox, this is a really good breakdown to help reach that decision. If you aren't a tech savvy person, I would suggest trying both services and determine which one is easier for you to understand. I use both, but for different reasons. Google Drive is my personal fave however. I love how it integrates with all my other Google services.
Great video. Thank you. Here's to your growing community. Steve if we wanted to send films via Dropbox or Google drive etc.... And want our customers to pay on display. Is there such a video to show this set up?
If I'm right, we can create many google driver accounts, then connect them with one another (by sharing). So we just need to log on one account, but can still access other accounts' folders, thus expanding our storage space. (I wonder if I'm right and if it's similar in dropbox?) :)
Tuyen Pham I never tried that system, but it might work, I suspect it will become combersome over time, as to Dropbox, they may block that in in the desktop app.
I don't know if this has changed with Google Drive because I stopped using it a while ago for these reasons: 1- The Drive app crashes from time to time in the PC (occurred with various PCs), or doesn't sync some folders/files, so various times I had to disconnect the account and synchronize all the files again, which takes time and bandwidth. 2- In the case of choosing to use Google Docs, I didn't like the fact that my files are always only in the cloud and only accessible to read/write through the Google service, either because you can't actually download Google Docs to your device (like PC), or because it's difficult to do it (like you have to manually set each file as available offline for your phone, but it doesn't work for all types of Google Docs). In most cases if you don't have Internet the access to view and edit the docs is very limited. Also, and more important, generally you actually don't have backups in your devices, so if for some reason you loose your Google account, you loose basically everything, So, anyways I had to use an alternative to Google Docs and then Google Docs were not a plus anymore. And also I felt insecure with the synchronization capability of the Drive, which never occurred with Dropbox.
Used Dropbox for years. I have tens of thousands of graphics files that I synced between my work iMac and homer MacBook. The sync could take zero to 20 minutes to start and would dominate my macs, especially the MacBook, until it finished. My MacBook was ridiculously slow for at least 30 minutes every time I booted up. I switched everything to google drive recently. It was faster and easier to do than I had anticipated. Now, when I boot up, it's starts syncing right away and barely slows me down at all. What used to take 30 minutes is maybe 5 and doesn't bog me down anymore. To me, google drive is the clear winner.
Hello Steve Dotto With your help and fun tech presentations I am beginning to feel like I am understanding. This ever expanding world of media and computing. Thank you Tracey
As usual - a great job! This question has been a quandary for me for some time - especially as I have been using Dropbox partly for storage and moreso for getting my PC and iPad to communicate! Recently as a result of taking your Productivity Course, have moved away from Outlook and iPhone combo to iPhone & Google. I think I will use GoogleDrive for my own stuff and use the Dropbox simpler file sharing system with other Directors in our sailing club. I notice that "Box" is aggressively marketing "Free" "Box " for iPhone & iPad- 50 Gigs encrypted cloud storage" . This could shift the goal posts maybe? .
dottotech : I think that this needs an update, or to be taken down, because its no longer valid, if not misleading. A lot has changed in 4 years. In 2018, Drive costs $1.99 month for 100GB, or $20/yr. Drive's sile sharing is granular and sends a notice with link to notify the sharee. The Docs live interactive collaboration features makes big difference, there are synching clients for Mac and Windows PC. and then there are Chromebooks . . .
Great stuff! Thanks for sharing your point of view. I heard you say you use both options. I'm quite a fan of that set-up too. However, do you make certain distinctions between which you upload on Dropbox and which on Drive? Again, great video!
Steve, There is a file syncing feature that I do not quite understand, but know its essential for what I need and why I began using Dropbox. For the specific task of having a Quicken file that is available to use on both my desktop and my laptop. Prior to using dropbox, other cloud services seemed unable to recognize the changes when I would open my Quicken file, Add a transaction, then close the file. The data NEVER seemed to be in sync. Same thing goes for Turbo Tax files. I keep these documents in my dropbox folder and any changes made are instantly saved and able to be used on the other computer. Would you happen to know what I am refering to and why other cloud services seemed unable to handle this task? Perhaps the others have caught up now and I can save myself the $99 per year I spend on dropbox, because I use BOX.com for EVERYTHING else.
I have no idea why you would have those issues, I do know that Intuit files are very sensitive....if that makes sense. I would ask Quicken support they are very good!
Great video Steve! I have a question. How can I use 2 Google Drive account in one pc with Windows 7? With out paying for another software to do that, like In Sync.
I Added a note to the video, as Google has dropped the pricing on Drive,
$1.99f for 100GB, a big drop$9.99 for a TB
Kind of kicks Dropbox to the curb if you are paying!
in the note says 100 Mb for 1.99 not Gb... just letting you know
Fixed now! Thanks
Have you ever tried Mega mega.co.nz/#info
No I have not Hammie1981 looks interesting
dottotech
I don't use Mega because it is made by Kim Dotcom, the founder of Megaupload, which was taken down because of copyright issues.
Steve is extremely good in explaining things such as the difference between drop box and google. It is nice to have some one who talks in away that even a 72 year old understands and feels more like enjoying all the new electronic. Thanks Steve
It is a pleasure +Rita Irene It warms my heart hearing that!
The video is as clear as anyone would want.
Great stuff.
Thanks.
Steve, I stumbled onto your channel. Your presentation, quality of content, and obvious experience is highly appreciated. I remain amazed at the level of motivation and willingness to create and share this type of content. Thank you for your contributions.
Lance McGrew Thanks Lance! This channel has grown into a great community already, I get as much out of it as I put in! Glad you are part of it!
dottotech I can't agree more Lance! I've learned sooooo much since re-discovering Steve from his TV days:)
121GigawattsEh :-)
its good to see that youtubers are not just 20-somethings.. As much as i do enjoy my gaming channels i want to say that i liked this vid, and also subbed your channel. videos laid out in a very neat format and simple enough for a beginner to understand. Thumbs up and keep them coming DottoTech ! :D
Thank You +Wade Jenson Us Baby Boomers need TH-cam as as well!
The fact that you are funny and lively made this 12 minutes video actually watchable and I learned a lot from it. Cheers from Brazil!
Jp Jacobsen I am glad you liked it!
Just some things that I learned from using both:
Great points, I was not aware there was no client yet for Linux.
Iruo
I used Dropbox mainly, but switched to Drive a while ago. Two things that Dropbox do better is, each file in Dropbox is backed up. so even if you overwrite or delete. you can get it back through the web. Second is that dropbpx is more widespread and supported in third party applications, it is also has native clients on more places. For example linux.
Good points Brian Levinsen
dottotech you forgot to mention, Google Docs data does not count towards your quotea.
Good catch Fredrik Linnander I did not mention that and it is a big plus for Google Drive!
Yes! Even this app runs well on many Smart Phones OS Brian Levinsen
In 2018 EVERYTHING on Drive is not only backed up, every change to every Google Docs file on Drive is backed up.
Steve, great job. This is the second video of yours that I have watched and I like your professional style and quality.
Great review but what is the desktop app to download to display Dropbox and Google Drive as folders?
***** Sounds to me like you have a plan! And it sounds like a good one.
is it possible to move everything from Dropbox to Google Drive and if so How thank You
Even in 2018 this video proves useful and relevant to me. This guy is lightyears ahead of his time.
THANK YOU!!! I teach in a Homeschool co-op and have just been trying to determine the difference between these two things. Your video made so much sense!
Glad I could help
Great video! I'm sending this to some clients who are still not using cloud storage to educate them on the best options.
Very well done - dottotech has a pleasant delivery on a tough subject. A+ for me!
~ 9:00 ... don't forget to mention, that G-Drive documents don't need any space on your account... ;-)
a question... is it now possible, with Dropbox, that you can give just for subfolders "certen rights" (reading or writing rights) to members of your group?
- main association (folder)
- Our own Team (folder)
in both are many sub-folders... and if you need to work with someone else (for graphic stuff, pictures, ec.ec.), who is not in the daily board of the "main association", you surely don't want to share all "sub-folders" with critical informations with this person... so in G-Drive you can give him/her only the rights for the sub-folder he/she needs...
Thanks Jason, Google has added that since I recorded the video. Best of luck in the migration!
Thanks Chipp Walters Great overview!
Chipp Walters .... on point 👍
how did you download the icons to your desktop or labtop for google drive? and how did you put it in the favorites?
Clear and honest comparison, thanks. Been in doubt between using Dropbox and Google Drive, but this helps.
I am sxo excited about how much mzore I understand this process. It is so helpful and I never had a clue how useful this would be for not only my business but for multiple other things in my everyday life. Thanks. Shelley ; owner of Impulsive Image.
What about privacy policies of the two companies?
*So which is better, Google Drive or Dropbox?*
At about 07:13 Steve talks about how sharing is better with Dropbox.
Thanks So Much Craig, great explanation, I think I need to do a new video! It is on the top of my list for next week!
Family office 365 account 6 installs of office plus 1tb of OneDrive each account for about £8 a month is a much better deal, I can’t see a use for Dropbox anymore?
Great video... if one was to move from Dropbox to google, how and what would be the easiest way to migrate everything?
1. Will Google drive drop photos as you take them like Dropbox does?
2. Will files that are stored in GDrive update automatically as I add to them with MS WORD
I believe so
1- @plus/answer/1304820?hl=en
There is actually a direct way to share file from the GDrive folder on the local hard drive.
Just right-click the desired file or folder.
In the contextual menu there is a GDrive option.
Hover over it and in the fly-out menu is the Share option.
It works exactly the same as if one were online.
I believe that is Windows Only, but thanks Eduardo
dottotech Yet it's a substantial "only" as it's still the most widely used OS. BTW, great video.
Thanks for the input tosinis earning free space seems to be something of a sport these days!
+Amanda Magee That is great news! Thanks for sharing and good luck to your friend!
Thank you ! Very excellent expert video ! I am enthusiastic about your diplomacy and expressions in finding the dot in tech .
Great info, as always, Steve. I have 2 quick questions. I noticed the comment that indicated that GD converts files to their format from MS, is that correct? Also, with either service, when you sink files to the Desktop for convenience, those files then consume the memory of your laptop/PC etc., correct?
Yes you have local and online versions, and it does save files in GD format.
I do not think Dropbox would be classified as secure.
can't believe this show is still going. I remember watching it on canadain cable wayyy back in the day lol
Meekal Boone Cable? CABLE? we were network all the way!
Hello! What about syncing speed between the two? I find g.drive to be slower
Ihtiyor Hasanov I think that is a moving target, depending on where you are and when. I find both to be pretty slow actually.....
Thanks Steve. Is is true that the recipient of a video sent from Google Drive needs a Google Account to view it? Also quality of video appears poor compared with Dropbox. Any reason for this?
cowbridgedance You need a google account to use Google Drive, don't know about the quality issue.
dottotech Thanks. Yes user, of course, needs Google Account. However, if I share a video file with someone who does not have a Google Account, they are unable to view the file. With Dropbox I do not have that problem - the recipient of the file does not need a Dropbox Account to view the file. Useful sometimes.Wonderful tutorials Steve, well presented, thanks.
i used to watch you all the time when you were on tv. glad to see you are still in the business.
+Jason Wilson Just on TH-cam now.
+dottotech great job. I watch your Evernote videos. you convinced me to get it. love it. keep up the great work.
dottotech I got 50GB of bonus space storage on dropbox when I bought a galaxy s3 from amazon, BUT it's limited for 2 years, so now I wanna know what's happening when this offer comes to end AND i'm using pretty much more space than the free plan ?
they will give me some time to get my files out or they will delete them !
Steve,....admire your honesty. Thanks for the straight up approach. I give you 2 thumbs up my friend. I have used Dropbox and it seems easy enough. Now I will explore Google Drive. Thank You Again !!!
Thanks +Gary Jones I appreciate the kind words.
I use a Dell laptop, android (Samsung) phone, and an Ipad. If I put photos onto either Drive or Dropbox, can I access them from all three devices?
Yep!
What are you using for making your video (the setting to keep a floating video over your presentation ?) ?
Darius Urbonas Screenflow, here is a webinar on how I make my vids.
www.dottotech.com/screencasting-webinar-on-demand/
Thank you mate ! I will definitely watch it ! Appreciated ! :)
Do you know if there is a way to set password protection on folders in either DropBox or Google Drive. For example, I may have a primary folder and in that folder I may have multiple sub-folders. I may want to share each sub-folder with different people and don't want the wrong person to access the wrong folder. Are there any cloud services that offer these features?
y good I will be there for you If you get to see the place to stay in touch with you.
Hi Steve
After failure of a Seagate GoFlex BackUp Drive & total lack of any kind of support from them I have been looking for free online backup programs simply to backup my documents, photographs & music collection & have already downloaded DropBox & backed up my Documents (63Mb).
+Chris Zecca You still need to have a backup! we havea webinar this coming week that will teach you the basics of going paperless
app.webinarjam.net/register/711/8f6a7c5931
as a programmer, i see google drive is really difficult to integrate our app or website to. dropbox has very straight forward sdk to help us interact with their api (upload, download, search files) while in google drive, i haven't really found any tutorial about it. the documentation is also hard to understand for basic programmer like me.
if anyone reading this and actually find google drive api is really easy to you, you can let me know where do i start learning it. thank you :D
Good video...how would you go about moving content from Dropbox to Google Drive?
+Golf Dude It is pretty simple, Dropbox keeps a local folder on your drive so you can move those files into Google Drive.
Hey +Chantal Fleury You need to set up the sync folders on both systems. use the gear icon in the dropbox menu.
Great review. Now I need to consider Evernote too for my new scanner that will sync with all three products.
DropBx can use any mail-address, Gdrive needs a gmail account as far as I know.
so you can use a "general" mailadress (eg info@etc..) to create a DropBox and share items with several people, including you personal mail-address. So you cna reall seperate your own DropBox, shielded from other users.
If you want to publish your videos from DropBox on FB, do they appear on TH-cam ???
ISI - LUCI Nope, you have to publish them on TH-cam for them to appear IN TH-cam
While I probably will stick with dropbox, I find this video very entertaining and informing. Subscribed.
I wish that Google Drive could sync with my phone as easily as Dropbox without having to use another app to do it. Thanks for video.
I keep finding gems on your page. Thanks for the information. I just downloaded Google Drive as a back up to my files and pics besides my external storage. Thanks Steve!
+David Leon Great to hear that David, thanks for sharing!
Thank you! Short, simple, yet very informative!
Glad you enjoyed it!
it seems like files in your Google drive that are in Google format do not count against your storage quota. I'm not 100% sure of that though.
Hey Ronnie, I do believe you are correct, I should have mentioned that in the video!
no matter what i do, drop box will not let me drag and drop from the cloud to my pc, desktop, folders, etc... how come i cant put these files in a folder on my desktop?? its backup files for my android
Great point about the storage Stephanie! Thanks
Great suggestions TONIA L. CLARK
Both accounts are debited (word?) when files are in a shared folder. (i.e. 1 mg file takes 1 mg from the account of every member of the shared file)
I don't know if this has changed with Google Drive because I stopped using it a while ago for these reasons:
1- The Drive app crashes from time to time in the PC (occurred with various PCs), or doesn't sync some folders/files, so various times I had to disconnect the account and synchronize all the files again, which takes time and bandwidth.
Also, and more important, generally you actually don't have backups in your devices, so if for some reason you loose your Google account, you loose basically everything,
So, anyways I had to use an alternative to Google Docs and then Google Docs were not a plus anymore. And also I felt insecure with the synchronization capability of the Drive, which never occurred with Dropbox.
Thanks for the feedback Jonathan Cantillo Jiménez I think a few of the issues you had a re resolved, but not all.
Thank you so much for sharing, feeling a lot more confident navigating Dropbox better as well as Google Drive.
What used to take 30 minutes is maybe 5 and
doesn't bog me down anymore.
To me, google drive is the clear winner.
Thanks Alan, it is often these little things that make the biggest difference.
Hello Steve Dotto
With your help and fun tech presentations I am beginning to feel like I am understanding. This ever expanding world of media and computing.
Thank you
Tracey
That is awesome! Glad we are helping!
This could shift the goal posts maybe? .
nice,,i use dropbox i wanna know how to take a folder from dropbox and put in all on my external hard drive ..please help
zayemusic Just drag and drop it.
I just try that its like the folder is trapped in Dropbox and won't let me do that
Is there another way
Can google storage handle Publisher files ... no it does not upload Mocrosoft Publisher files. Any tips?
Question... If I have a few gmail email accts will I have different google drive accts?
dottotech : I think that this needs an update, or to be taken down, because its no longer valid, if not misleading. A lot has changed in 4 years. In 2018, Drive costs $1.99 month for 100GB, or $20/yr. Drive's sile sharing is granular and sends a notice with link to notify the sharee. The Docs live interactive collaboration features makes big difference, there are synching clients for Mac and Windows PC. and then there are Chromebooks . . .
What do you make of RealCloud for storing stuff?
Great stuff! Thanks for sharing your point of view. I heard you say you use both options. I'm quite a fan of that set-up too. However, do you make certain distinctions between which you upload on Dropbox and which on Drive? Again, great video!
Hey Dottotech, can I use either service WITHOUT syncing? I don't want to take up space on my laptops HDD.
I thinks so, I am not sure if one computer always needs to have a local copy or not, but for secondary systems it is no problem.
Hi Steve. Which did you go for in the end and use now?
+Darius Baria Both, LOL,
+dottotech Ditto! :-)
Great video Steve! I have a question. How can I use 2 Google Drive account in one pc with Windows 7? With out paying for another software to do that, like In Sync.
Sure, you can use multiple Google accounts
You can only use ONE Google Drive account on one computer. You can only use multiple Google accounts in a web browser.
