This is one of our favorite getaways since it is only about three and a half hours from our home in Midland, Texas. We usually spend the night at the Chisos Mountains Lodge. The last time we were there, a large male cougar walked two feet in front of me as I looked out over the back porch rail of our cabin about 10 pm one night. We have seen black bears there often.
With Holistic Management, you could restore this land to its former glory. Herding large herds of livestock/bison across the landscape. There used to be millions and millions of Bison and other animals that migrated across this land, and the lack of animals has turned this once grassland into a desert.
You do not need a passport to take a river trip in Big Bend. In fact, we encourage you to leave your passport at home, so you can't lose it on the river!
it was a little unclear but I agree on the passport needed if going to cross into Mexico to visit the town of boquillas. I think that was what the intention of the passport information. I recommend bringing the passport when going to big bend regardless because there is random checkpoints along the way.
