In mirrorball she keeps references a circus, and RED tour the theme was a circus "they called off the circus" and Loverfest was called off for COVID and "I'm still on that tightrope, I'm still on that trapeze , I'm still trying everything to keep you looking at me". Like she's trying her hardest to keep performing and being there for her fans so they don't get tired of her like the rest of society.
This makes me so emotional because there is no way a fan will ever get tired. Like we sit with her albums for hours and analyze word for word, we re-listen to old tracks trying to draw comparisons to new tracks. We grow and bend whichever way Taylor goes we go that way. There's no place in the world that I wouldn't go for Taylor and I think a lot of Swifties relate to that feeling. Like we left behind the people who couldn't get onboard with Reputation, Lover and now folklore and we grow with Taylor. I can't ever imagine my life without Taylor Swift, tbh I don't even remember my time before I met Taylor Swift (by met I mean hearing her songs, if I meet her I will most probably die). But yeah, it breaks my heart knowing that she's worried we will forget about her, or move on to someone else. She continues to keep her feet on the ground and is so grateful for us which is so refreshing, knowing that she sells millions upon millions of copies, get tired of Taylor is impossible. Yet, I love the exploration, the journey, and I love that she's not worried to change and grow with us. Anyways, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk :P
I know I’m 1 yr late but in the movie, Tinker Bell lost her pixie dust and almost died cuz everyone “turned” against her but she got it back and she survived after they shouted “I do believe in fairies.” Taylor is a fcking genius.

I think that in the beginning when she’s sitting on the piano and playing music in a very comforting home it’s representing her first albums when she felt her happiest ( self titled, fearless, speak now and red) then she saw something in her music she wanted to explore ( when she went into the piano) and it took her to a beautiful magical and whimsical place, (1989) until she took a step too far and went deeper into music which led her to a storm ( when she took her break and during rep and lover when the scooter Braun/ Kanye situation happened) but throughout the storms she knew she could count on music to save her and make her feel happy again, when she went into the piano again the music she’s making now is making her feel at home and back to her eras where she felt happiest Idk if that made any sense but
And also she was not the same person she began, she came back wet and much more experienced than before. She came back to her comfort zone but she witnessed so many things and she knows what moves she should make anymore, she knows how to survive or what she wants to do. I love this detail cuz she's home again but as a grown woman.

i saw a theory somewhere about the crooked key in the piano, check it out: The broken key is B, which is the 7th note on the C scale. 7 meaning the 7th album, which is Lover, who only experienced half the journey We all know that each era lasted for about 2-3 years. In Lover era, it was only around 1 year (the album itself is not even 1 year old). So that's why the 7th key is only half.

I love this theory! I feel like the piano itself is also a metaphor. It’s a small piano at first in the cabin (beginning her career or starting over) and then it’s a beautiful grand piano when she is in the forest and it’s covered it moss. Maybe the moss represents things getting overwhelming and then it’s clean in the next scene in the water. It really made me thing about her song Clean, “when I was drowning, that’s when I could finally breathe” . Ugh 😩 also in Miss Americana she said she felt like she might never get to do this again (write and release music) but she did and it’s Amazing 🤗

I'm 72 and I've been a superfan since 2007 when I heard her the first time singing Our Song. Hearing those lyrics and that melody brought back the only other time I was affected the same way, and that was in 1963 when fifteen year old me heard my first Beatles song. In 2008 I actually met her in person in Winnipeg when she came to town with Rascall Flatts, and I told her she'd one day be as big as the Beatles if she kept doing what she had started doing. Since then I've sat at my TV and cried as she won award after award and did it all while keeping her feet firmly on the ground. When she released Lover I compared her seven album output in terms of a fabulous meal; three great (country-ish) appetizers, followed by three sumptuous main courses (Red, 1989, and Reputation), and then serving up the sweetest dessert with Lover. My analogy might have meant that the feast was over but I predicted she'd serve up any number of degestifs from then on. Cardigan fits that analogy perfectly. I'm now predicting that her best work is yet to come and it won't be in the field of music.

I see 'chasing shadows in a grocery line' as Betty thinking she catches a glimpse of James everywhere she is, she's out shopping, sees someone from behind and thinks it's him. Just like the line in The One where she says 'I thought I saw you at the bus stop, I didn't though'. Am I the only one who interprets this line like that? He's haunting her even though she ended it because he cheated on her. I love your interpretation, but what's really stunning about the album is that I believe non-Swifties can be (and are, from what I see and hear) knocked out by these songs without knowing a thing about Taylor. I know that when I first listened to "Exile," "My Tears Ricochet," "August," "This Is Me Trying," and "Illicit Affairs" I was moved to tears before ever thinking about whether they related to Taylor's own life at all. They are just some of the most beautifully heartbreaking songs about love-gone-wrong I've ever heard, no matter who they are about. Even "Invisible String," which is so obviously about Taylor and Joe, can be enjoyed for the incredible charm of its story, storytelling, and fate-can-be-kind message, even if you don't know a thing about their history. That is Taylor's genius!

I really love the line from Peace "The devils in the details, but you've got a friend in me." Because shes filled her songs with details about her life and experiences and flaws, so the details are about the devils. And it references "a friend to all is a friend to none" meaning shes promising loyalty, that we/joe can trust her. Despite everything shes been through, shes still our favourite cardigan.

Love this - I hadn’t even noticed the way she was describing her discography there in the beginning, but that makes so much sense! Looking forward to you guys dissecting the album in a month or something. One thought before then though: I agree that a lot of the “breakup” songs are metaphors for Scott and losing her music, but don’t agree that “The 1” is one of those. The lyrics in “The 1”, from what I can tell, are much more fond and wishful for the other person to be “having adventures” and “meeting a woman”, and about how she is also alright now and everything’s good - but in another timeline, it would have been great if they had been one of those “greatest movies that were never made”. It’s so wistful and kind, and really doesn’t seem like the feelings or dynamic that would represent Scott, who rightfully is roasted pretty hard in other songs on this album, or the loss of her music.
This is my take as well on the 1. There is too much affection in that song for the person she's talking about for it to be about Scott. This is much more what happens when you get older and look back and reflect on a youthful relationship. One that is now being viewed through the nostalgia of time and distance.

With that all in mind, listening to this song to cap off a re-listen of the "Red" album is so lovely.

I know this is probably not what the video means but I see the path of Taylor's career reflected in the video. First she is happily playing on her own, representing her country era when she was new and naive, then she saw the glimmer of the bigger pop world and decided to step into it, where she flourished more. She had her "downfall" (she came back stronger than a 90s trend, obviously) and came back from it using music, like when she escaped the ocean through the piano. She returns to the cabin where she started, which comforts her and gives a feeling of safety, and we all know how comfortable she is writing folklore and evermore and also she is re-recording her old music, returning to her beginning.

Firstly, thank you for bringing so much light, love and pure energy at a time like this 💛 Also, I believe Cardigan is about Taylor reconnecting to her true self. After everything she has gone through ... losing herself through losing her music, through past relationships, through society’s expectations etc. of who she should be. When she writes, “A friend to all is a friend to none. Chase two girls, lose the one” ... this is her assuming versions of what she thought people wanted of her, the “nice girl”, or what she was pushed to become. Losing herself in the process. But she clings to her music (piano) and to what “she knew” deep down all along (Enchanted A.K.A. Transported Forest). The music would never betray her. She holds the piano amongst the flood of pain, hurt, betrayal and despair, not just from external forces but also from betraying herself by choosing the “wrong girl” (version of her) ... all in all, she knew “you’d come back to me.” She mentions the past versions as an honor to them all being a part of her but now it’s the return to innocence (playing hide and seek in childhood, giving me your weekends like a kid playing and having fun). This album is her homecoming to herself. 💛😭 Much love to you both, thank you for making me feel like I have friends who are just as floored by this surprise album as you both are. 🥺

I never made the connection of Illicit Affairs to Scott but after you said that, I immediately thought of the bridge coming after My Tears Ricochet on the tour and my mind is sufficiently blown. She truly is the gift that keeps on giving.
Loooove it. Thank you both for your passion for Taylor! I think this music video perfectly shows her journey, starting with her and just the music, alone and quiet. Taking her into this fairytale setting which is her music, her fantasy and also all the good things and times in her life and career which may have felt unreal. But of course it all comes with trouble, uncertainty, bad reputation (the ocean). But the music, the fans, a stable healthy relationship (with Joe AND with herself) gets her back to this peaceful beginning state from where all creativity flows. Where it's just her and her imagination and the music. Like it's meant to be. Some more things I noticed: - In "peace" there are the lyrics "But I'm a fire and I'll keep your brittle heart warm If your cascade, ocean wave blues come" - the fire, the cascade and the ocean all are in this video. - The picture next to the clock and the photo of her granddad is of course Holiday House. - The middle fairytale part is green which could symbolize the stage in her life where she was wating to meet someone (Green was the gras in Invisible string). The ocean is blue (maybe also Joe's ocean blue eyes in which she is drowning? "Ocean blue eyes looking in mine, I feel like I might sink and drown and die" - Gorgeous). Of course the golden light is love. And love is the transformative power here. - Also how she looks in the end is soo much delicate music video vibes! (The wet dress/hair and her smile) I am so in love. This whole song (if not the whole album) feels so much like a cardigan itself, like a warm safe hug. ✨

I think that in the beginning when she’s sitting on the piano and playing music in a very comforting home it’s representing her first albums when she felt her happiest ( self titled, fearless, speak now and red) then she saw something in her music she wanted to explore ( when she went into the piano) and it took her to a beautiful magical and whimsical place, (1989) until she took a step too far and went deeper into music which led her to a storm ( when she took her break and during rep and lover when the scooter Braun/ Kanye situation happened) but throughout the storms she knew she could count on music to save her and make her feel happy again, when she went into the piano again the music she’s making now is making her feel at home and back to her eras where she felt happiest Idk if that made any sense but

We all know that each era lasted for about 2-3 years. In Lover era, it was only around 1 year (the album itself is not even 1 year old). So that's why the 7th key is only half.

I love this theory! I feel like the piano itself is also a metaphor. It’s a small piano at first in the cabin (beginning her career or starting over) and then it’s a beautiful grand piano when she is in the forest and it’s covered it moss. Maybe the moss represents things getting overwhelming and then it’s clean in the next scene in the water. It really made me thing about her song Clean, “when I was drowning, that’s when I could finally breathe” . Ugh 😩 also in Miss Americana she said she felt like she might never get to do this again (write and release music) but she did and it’s Amazing 🤗

I'm 72 and I've been a superfan since 2007 when I heard her the first time singing Our Song. Hearing those lyrics and that melody brought back the only other time I was affected the same way, and that was in 1963 when fifteen year old me heard my first Beatles song. In 2008 I actually met her in person in Winnipeg when she came to town with Rascall Flatts, and I told her she'd one day be as big as the Beatles if she kept doing what she had started doing. Since then I've sat at my TV and cried as she won award after award and did it all while keeping her feet firmly on the ground. When she released Lover I compared her seven album output in terms of a fabulous meal; three great (country-ish) appetizers, followed by three sumptuous main courses (Red, 1989, and Reputation), and then serving up the sweetest dessert with Lover. My analogy might have meant that the feast was over but I predicted she'd serve up any number of degestifs from then on. Cardigan fits that analogy perfectly. I'm now predicting that her best work is yet to come and it won't be in the field of music.

I see 'chasing shadows in a grocery line' as Betty thinking she catches a glimpse of James everywhere she is, she's out shopping, sees someone from behind and thinks it's him. Just like the line in The One where she says 'I thought I saw you at the bus stop, I didn't though'. Am I the only one who interprets this line like that? He's haunting her even though she ended it because he cheated on her.

I love your interpretation, but what's really stunning about the album is that I believe non-Swifties can be (and are, from what I see and hear) knocked out by these songs without knowing a thing about Taylor. I know that when I first listened to "Exile," "My Tears Ricochet," "August," "This Is Me Trying," and "Illicit Affairs" I was moved to tears before ever thinking about whether they related to Taylor's own life at all. They are just some of the most beautifully heartbreaking songs about love-gone-wrong I've ever heard, no matter who they are about. Even "Invisible String," which is so obviously about Taylor and Joe, can be enjoyed for the incredible charm of its story, storytelling, and fate-can-be-kind message, even if you don't know a thing about their history. That is Taylor's genius!

I really love the line from Peace "The devils in the details, but you've got a friend in me." Because shes filled her songs with details about her life and experiences and flaws, so the details are about the devils. And it references "a friend to all is a friend to none" meaning shes promising loyalty, that we/joe can trust her. Despite everything shes been through, shes still our favourite cardigan.

Love this - I hadn’t even noticed the way she was describing her discography there in the beginning, but that makes so much sense! Looking forward to you guys dissecting the album in a month or something.
One thought before then though: I agree that a lot of the “breakup” songs are metaphors for Scott and losing her music, but don’t agree that “The 1” is one of those. The lyrics in “The 1”, from what I can tell, are much more fond and wishful for the other person to be “having adventures” and “meeting a woman”, and about how she is also alright now and everything’s good - but in another timeline, it would have been great if they had been one of those “greatest movies that were never made”. It’s so wistful and kind, and really doesn’t seem like the feelings or dynamic that would represent Scott, who rightfully is roasted pretty hard in other songs on this album, or the loss of her music.

This is my take as well on the 1. There is too much affection in that song for the person she's talking about for it to be about Scott. This is much more what happens when you get older and look back and reflect on a youthful relationship. One that is now being viewed through the nostalgia of time and distance.

With that all in mind, listening to this song to cap off a re-listen of the "Red" album is so lovely.

I know this is probably not what the video means but I see the path of Taylor's career reflected in the video. First she is happily playing on her own, representing her country era when she was new and naive, then she saw the glimmer of the bigger pop world and decided to step into it, where she flourished more. She had her "downfall" (she came back stronger than a 90s trend, obviously) and came back from it using music, like when she escaped the ocean through the piano. She returns to the cabin where she started, which comforts her and gives a feeling of safety, and we all know how comfortable she is writing folklore and evermore and also she is re-recording her old music, returning to her beginning.

Firstly, thank you for bringing so much light, love and pure energy at a time like this 💛 Also, I believe Cardigan is about Taylor reconnecting to her true self. After everything she has gone through ... losing herself through losing her music, through past relationships, through society’s expectations etc. of who she should be. When she writes, “A friend to all is a friend to none. Chase two girls, lose the one” ... this is her assuming versions of what she thought people wanted of her, the “nice girl”, or what she was pushed to become. Losing herself in the process. But she clings to her music (piano) and to what “she knew” deep down all along (Enchanted A.K.A. Transported Forest). The music would never betray her. She holds the piano amongst the flood of pain, hurt, betrayal and despair, not just from external forces but also from betraying herself by choosing the “wrong girl” (version of her) ... all in all, she knew “you’d come back to me.” She mentions the past versions as an honor to them all being a part of her but now it’s the return to innocence (playing hide and seek in childhood, giving me your weekends like a kid playing and having fun). This album is her homecoming to herself. 💛😭 Much love to you both, thank you for making me feel like I have friends who are just as floored by this surprise album as you both are. 🥺

I never made the connection of Illicit Affairs to Scott but after you said that, I immediately thought of the bridge coming after My Tears Ricochet on the tour and my mind is sufficiently blown. She truly is the gift that keeps on giving.
Loooove it. Thank you both for your passion for Taylor! I think this music video perfectly shows her journey, starting with her and just the music, alone and quiet. Taking her into this fairytale setting which is her music, her fantasy and also all the good things and times in her life and career which may have felt unreal. But of course it all comes with trouble, uncertainty, bad reputation (the ocean). But the music, the fans, a stable healthy relationship (with Joe AND with herself) gets her back to this peaceful beginning state from where all creativity flows. Where it's just her and her imagination and the music. Like it's meant to be.
Some more things I noticed:
- In "peace" there are the lyrics
"But I'm a fire and I'll keep your brittle heart warm
If your cascade, ocean wave blues come" - the fire, the cascade and the ocean all are in this video.
- The picture next to the clock and the photo of her granddad is of course Holiday House.
- The middle fairytale part is green which could symbolize the stage in her life where she was wating to meet someone (Green was the gras in Invisible string). The ocean is blue (maybe also Joe's ocean blue eyes in which she is drowning? "Ocean blue eyes looking in mine, I feel like I might sink and drown and die" - Gorgeous). Of course the golden light is love. And love is the transformative power here.
- Also how she looks in the end is soo much delicate music video vibes! (The wet dress/hair and her smile)
I am so in love. This whole song (if not the whole album) feels so much like a cardigan itself, like a warm safe hug. ✨
