    Love these - had many of them as a small boy over 75 years ago. They were issued during the Great Depression and sold in Woolworths for sixpence or ninepence each - otherwise my parents could never have afforded them.

    Have got a shed load of this music on original records. Some I have not got round to play but every time I put one on its like waking up ghosts. Love it.

    This is just amazing! Harry Hudson was an excellent band leader, probably my favorite in Great Britain!

    There's a certain excitement with these Edison Bell records you simply don't get anywhere else. Even in the States. Harry Hudson and Alfredo's bands just captured that energy a few bands had in the period, which didn't exist before, and vanished soon after. Even on a daft tune like "It always starts to rain"... Not exactly ideal material for a great record, but when you hear what they did with it, you have to be in awe. (Ambrose's version is a competent PLOD in comparison.) The Bowlly side here is also more fun than putting 100 wasps down your trousers! (Please don't try this at home.)

      @@CamperVanPersie I'd go a little further into the matter, Starman. Where the wasps can't reach. But, I suspect the Simpsons might know a thing or two, so probably....

    What a lovely compilation! Thank you so much for posting this and for all the "behind the scenes" work which this all entails. I've been following Bowlly for about 50 years and hey there were a couple of tracks which I haven't heard before. Please keep up the good work.

    I have never heard any of this before. It is great bringing these "ghosts" back from the past lying in their shellac grooves waiting to be re-discovered. Thank you for them, they are brilliant.

    Love Al Bowlly's rendition of Wrap your Troubles in Dreams - I'm a great early Bing fan but Al really nails this song. And Sam Browne was on top form here - a much underrated talent.

    The recordings at Edison Bell were definitely ahead of Crystalate, Broadcast, Sterno and Decca at that time, by the sound of it. Quite hi-fi! I heard that Decca inherited some of their techniques after E-B went bust.

    The sound quality may not totally up to HMV , but still incredibly good for the period. I Iove the warm and deep sound and the perfect balance within the band. The arrangements may not be as jazzy as Ambrose's, but the still are excellent.

    • @Panachord
      @Panachord  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For a budget label, Harry Hudson produced some good solid work. It may have lacked the sophistication of Ambrose, but they are spirited performances with good solo work.

      Time was when you could only use a needle once. After that you chewed up the grooves of your trusty shellac record. But for the days of LPs, yes, you're right.
