Thief demonstrates the pinnacle of an up and coming industry that abruptly came to a dead end fork in the road. The game is a national treasure as far as I'm concerned. If Thief was a part of your childhood like it was mine, then you had automatically been set up for perpetual disappointment as you now well know. I was 13 and I remember being so excited about the future of the gaming industry, thinking "Wow, this is only the beginning" back in 1998. Little did my young fresh mind foresee that the beginning was actually the end. Never since has there been anything hoisted to the realm of brilliance that was delivered in this game. I'm so grateful I had this growing up in part because now that I'm getting older I realize that even If I try hard enough to push the "nostalgia factor" aside, there is no denying that opportunity knocked but once and this would never come around again. I will end on a positive note in that I am happy to report the legacy of this series still lives on through fan missions over at TTLG 20 years later. So check them out if you have the time and interest because many of them are not to be missed.
Well stated Mike. I was 22 when my brother told me about a demo CD for this game and played for a few hours and gave up because I could not find enough loot to complete the expert objectives. A few months later I picked it back up and played with more patience and the game was perfect. The fan missions for years were amazing with many advancements using scripts to add features. It is true that there has not been a true successor to the Thief The Dark Project (Gold preferably) or the sequel Thief 2 of the Metal Age. Thief 2X: Shadows of the Metal Age (or T2X) which was made by fans was in many ways just as good as the original masterpieces. Other developers were making prerendered cutscenes or videos, Looking Glass Studios made great artistic segments that gave a certain flare we had not seen before. Thief TDP Gold Down in the Bonehoard cut scene is my favorite.
I agree with you on how good this game is and about contemporary gaming industry...but games are not movies. You CAN do a game you wish for yourself! You just have to believe in yourself. Every man borns with a certain genius and you have to just reveal it.
On the bright side, if gaming kept getting better we'd have wasted a lot more time on our asses. I'm glad the industry went to shit, and I still have all those great memories from the past still
The whole stealth genre was mutilated due to the increasing cost of development, leading to all the stealth games becoming more into action games because niche genres cannot exist when you need to sell 5 million copies to break even.
Well said. The late 90s were the pinnacle of gaming; back when AAA games were driven by unfiltered creativity, with no micro-management interference. It saddens me greatly that it appears that we will never see the likes of the first two Thief games or the original Deus Ex again. Games made with such creativity are now working under low budgets and they suffer for it. The AAA industry has become stagnant, due to the insanely high production costs.
I still have memories of the creepy undead enemies in this game, it was far creepier than Resident Evil in certain parts as the entire game was based upon stealth. It didn't matter how much holy water you had on you, fighting your way out wasn't a good option and the game didn't have to rely upon jump scares to heighten the peril. It made you feel almost like you were prey at certain points and that is far more scary than simply being in danger. Without a doubt one of my favorite games of all time.
Probably the only time we ever see Garrett truly afraid. A little bit hard to follow what's going on during the first viewing but it's clear what's going on after a second one. One can only imagine whether the reboot would bring back the feelings of terror and shock like the first game did.
sadly they didn't really... didn't even a damn reboot, it was a trend with Tomb Raider and they thought they could do the same. But Tomb Raider did not have any real story so it didn't matter, contrary to thief.
@@IRedpunk Once you step into the territory of AAA game development, the kind of trash akin to "Thief" 4 is what you will come accross for the majority of time. Those "creative directors" and financial advisors are so out of touch when it comes to gaming that it's ridiculous. Most of them probably don't even play any video game by the looks of it, and as such they don't know the demographic that different kinds of games are made for. Unbelievable how awesome the Thief and Thief 2 cutscene animations were. And the music. They really should have kept this style of storytelling with the newest game, it would have at least made it more tolerable.
Well, this was awesome. Here we have Constantine telling Garrett that the artifact's chaotic power has diminished and the only way to restore it is its organ namesake, giving Garrett the "honor" of having his eye do just that by Victoria's... whatever it is. It is revealed Constantine is The Trickster, Victoria is his plant demon servant, the Builders were their enemies, and he seeks to retake the world from humanity with his evil plants, leaving the helpless Garrett to be consumed by them. Not only is this one of the most interesting twists in a stealth game, which is saying a lot, considering other interesting twists in the genre, but The Trickster is one hell of a villain.
And now its 25 years this November. Time flies and we all miss the quality of older games, or maybe the heart in them. The graphics are old and dated but the story and gameplay are still better than new games.
Constantine's mansion used to creep me out (and still does every time I play through it), but this cutscene was the first one ever to REALLY make me shiver ...
This scene was so special, because at least for my first playthrough I never paid too much attention to the narrative of the game. Sure you had readables and cutscenes that vaguely implied something going on but it's never considered particularly important. Only when I finally reached this part of the game I realized how shit was going down. One of the most well-executed plot twists ever
I remember this scene, quite well.. It reminded me the true sense of dread as Garrett when I was younger. and for the record, I hated the Haunted Hammerites!
i loved the moment keepers appear , saved Garrett and washed their hands for what Garrett has done, Garrett knew he was doing terrible things and the eye was the top, keepers always protected those talismans and even the eye itself
Behold one of the creepiest cutscenes ever made! This Trickster of legend lives up to his name. Garett had just gotten him one of the most powerful artifacts of chaos ever. And though it is power is out of power, it can be restored with its organ namesake. And that is where Garett comes in; the honor of having his eye do just that. Constantine and Viktoria are demons who recite intense poems and rip out his eye before allowing him to get eaten by evil plants!
They did mix in real actors. Any time a character is depicted in full silhouette, that's a human actor. You can see a good example of the technique in this video at around 30 seconds in, when Garrett has his back to the camera.
The first and only time Garrett is truly under the circumstances... When I first saw Constantine, I knew there was something wrong... the wine spreading in vines, the plan to prove Garrett's mastery by making him stealing his sword... This cutscene is excellent... so... deranged, hahahaha. D.R.
This was such a WTF moment. I mean, you even saw the empty socket and everything....God, I remember watching this video over and over again in sheer horrified fascination. One of my favorite games *ever* and one I'd love to see re-made with modern graphics.
I agree! Chilling sound effects from example, the haunt. And music is perfectly moody, and original in a way, even if it isnt very melodic, and just ambient.
Actually you could see that coming. Constantine clearly has supernatural powers - all those vines around him and weird rooms in his house. Then the Eye is clearly an evil artifact - it made the cathedral haunted with all thesezombies. What happens when you put both together - Wizard + Evil Artifact = nothing good. I was like: Garrett, what were you thinking? You should have hidden the eye and went to negotiate - receive the money first then give the eye. Or do it in public or something. )))
@yogsagot No you, and most people here, miss the point. The point is that garret was arrogant and foolish, he was trained to see it coming, and he was left glyphs all over the place by the keepers warning him (the quotes in the cutscenes are the glyphs left for him, as artemis says at the end of the game, and garret only realizes are prophecy after the end of thief 2). It's even evident in the earlier cutscene, when vines grow all around garrets legs. He ignores it out of greed and arrogance.
EPIC. I was 13 when I played this and this movie still sends shivers down my spine, Looking glass please return... your presence in this world hinted an wonderful future for games. were games could be ... art..
The game is tense from the very start, but it gradually introduces you to Garrett's world before beginning the story proper... After that it becomes even more intense, until you reach the haunted cathedral and it becomes nigh on unbearable... then, when you finally complete the level and breathe a huge sigh of relief, it hits you with *this*, one of the most frightening cutscenes and brilliant plot twists ever. Absolutely fantastic game.
It makes me so sad that there haven't been any such pagan/occult/tribal type of worldbuildings as "real" and dark like this in already soon 2 decades. It makes me feel already that there will never be anything like this again.
@kidvicemusic Oh damn, I wasn't the only one who threw the box for the same reason! LOL your post made me smile. This game is a work of art, this and it's sequel, The Metal Age. I hope Thi4f will be as artsy and revolutionary as this was.
so many elements of this game had me on the edge..those death knights that make that haunting sound as they chase you. i hated the way garret died his death sound was so brutal..lol. man..good times.
i read somewhere that in a cinamatic design course a teacher shows this scene to his class every term, and alot of them are guys how have seen alot of hardcore violent stuff that doesn't bother them. but THIS scene they wince and grimace at,
Not true. The zombies, haunts, and apparitions cannot see you any better than normal guards or any other AI can. You have to pay attention to your light gem. Also, two overhead sword attacks will take down a zombie. (Though it'll get back up if you get close again.) Luckily, they're quite slow and don't pose much of a threat, to be honest. You can always just run around them without hiding at all.
I'm pretty sure this is my favorite scene, not even because of all the Dark Romanticist lovely creepy terror, but just because Garrett got his shit kicked hard. I love Garrett, but he totally deserved that. Poetic justice for a guy who's major character traits are being jaded and above everything.
this is my favorite pc game of all time hands down. i never played a game such as thief that got me so sucked into it. i mean i played the demo and after the demo i went on a hunt to buy retail and man i searched everywhere until i was able to find it. i wish i still had the box set. :( i threw it away trying to be a good christian what on earth was i thinking?!! still have the cd its just scratched all up. but damn they dont make em like this anymore.
One cool thing I notice is a recurring thing in the Looking Glass games is the dualism between 2 antagonistic factions that represent Pure Chaos vs Pure Order. These two forces are diametrically opposed but neither of them is on your side :p
I don't know what other people are talking about. Plot twist? The hell are you people talking about? You can see this coming from a mile away. The reason Garrett did not see this coming is due to his greed, so it's that simple for him, yet for the player there is plenty of clues to figure this out.
I really doubt it. Thief: DS pretty much wrapped up the series, so any new games would involve a very different story. The trickster is dead, so is Vicky, the Mechanists are disbanded and the Keepers are powerless. What is left to do?
@ReadyRave yeah well it only looks like world domination but actually isn't the Trickster himself is a deep thinker (he knew that the events that take place in the Metal Age would certainly come true) but his downfall is that he doesn't think through a plan which means his mind is also Chaotic you see that when you enter the Maw (last level) which well it look's like represents the mind of it's master (in Thief the Maw looks different because it's in control of Victoria).
@dannana113 i used to be obsessed with this game as a kid, though i was always too scared to play it. the catacombs and the old city church gave me nightmares. like literally
This was truly a breathtaking and terrifying cutscene as the Trickster reveals his identity and his horrific, primordial, eldritch power and shows us how out of our depth we all truly were. Unfortunately, he made one fatal mistake: He stiffed Garrett on his payment.
Guys, if you really love thief1 story and the Konstantin part, I can suggest The Men from Porlock shortstory by Laird Barron, listening to this on an audiobook gave some real pagan + meeting konstantin flashbacks :). Listening to that has been the only book/story that really gave me the same chills as this. A pretty similar scene takes place there, with same type of lore and scope :). I listened it from The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All, it has pretty similar vibe stories, definitely pretty good shit if you're into this type of supernatural/occult/pagan stuff like thief :)
guillmero del toro to direct a trilogy Stephen Russell - Garrett Rebecca Romijn Stamos - Viktoria John Malkovich - Karras Jeremy Irons - inspector Drept Brian Cox - Constantine Cary Elwes - Sherriff Truart also: Basso the box man, Head Keeper, Gamall
I would just bet. There are certain things done to certain parts of the body which seem to be wince-triggers. Things done to the eyes, or to fingernails seem to be good examples.
EXACTLY, they should just forget deadly shadows ( although dumbed down , it had its merits, like the cradle, and introducing garret to kiddos),and just pick up from that line in the end of metal age... " TELL ME " oh boy, somebody gotta reunite those looking glass dudes and make thief 3... who cares about sales? just make another masterpiece...
“Did you think those ancient phrase were mere words, man-fool? LOOK AT ME!”
The wonderful delivery, along with Garret sounding legitimately terrified, is what sells this for me. Stellar work.

One cool thing I notice is a recurring thing in the Looking Glass games is the dualism between 2 antagonistic factions that represent Pure Chaos vs Pure Order. These two forces are diametrically opposed but neither of them is on your side :p
Probably one of the most terrifying scenes in a video game. I was horrified the first time I viewed this.
yeah cragscleft was hardcore scary moving through those mines.those spiders just got to me.and i like spiders
gah damn this made this horrifying, gonna need to play this after i finish deadly shadows
Thief: The Dark Project All Cuscenes Remastered in 30fps: th-cam.com/video/saWcYlpgS-A/w-d-xo.html
I only played thief 3 so far, can't get the old ones working. But man I love it, best stealth game out there.
Genius stuff .
poor Garrett...
Garrett is the Quasimodo of K. Rool when his right eye gets yanked out of his face.
Poor Garrett. Now he must get his Eye back.. (and again and again thru the trilogy). Great.
Like Riddick said - "I bow to no man"
No honor amongst thieves.
Unfortunately, he made one fatal mistake: He stiffed Garrett on his payment.
the level for this game is so scary its almost hard to play but its awesome
18 YEARS
Guys, if you really love thief1 story and the Konstantin part, I can suggest The Men from Porlock shortstory by Laird Barron, listening to this on an audiobook gave some real pagan + meeting konstantin flashbacks :).
Ouuuch, eye.
guillmero del toro to direct a trilogy
Stephen Russell - Garrett
Rebecca Romijn Stamos - Viktoria
John Malkovich - Karras
Jeremy Irons - inspector Drept
Brian Cox - Constantine
Cary Elwes - Sherriff Truart
also: Basso the box man, Head Keeper, Gamall
just epic

I would just bet. There are certain things done to certain parts of the body which seem to be wince-triggers. Things done to the eyes, or to fingernails seem to be good examples.
to jeest majsterczyk
Such a cool scene...
Bro you still exist? 14 years damn..
@@JustNikoo lol, crazy how time flies
love it love it love
EXACTLY, they should just forget deadly shadows ( although dumbed down , it had its merits, like the cradle, and introducing garret to kiddos),and just pick up from that line in the end of metal age... " TELL ME " oh boy, somebody gotta reunite those looking glass dudes and make thief 3... who cares about sales? just make another masterpiece...
i remember this game. i used to watch my dad play it. I just realized that i was 6 years old at the time. Great game brings back alot of memories.
Karras disliked this 4 times.
This is the creepiest scene
I love Garrett ♥
