Honestly, this is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen you do, James. I agree with and follow every one of these etiquette tips when I am a buyer… except for two of them. I mean, no shop owner wants to receive a kiss from a werewolf, right? 😊 But for real; I am a buyer, collector, and seller of comics and these were some really great tips for the community. It was so thorough that I can’t think of one thing that I would add to the list! This should be one of those “The More You Know… 🌈⭐️” PSAs that you would see as a kid while watching cartoons on Saturday morning. I’m really looking forward to part II regarding proper seller etiquette; which I find to be very important as well. Thanks, James. ****5 STARS!***
You Really covered all the bases on this one, you could implore these to any business espeically any antique or collectible business. Good luck Hunting for comics.
I was at a big dollar bin sale with probably 40-50 long boxes. These two fellas were standing in front of the same 4 boxes, with stacks of comics taken out and set on the boxed, for well over an hour. They were literally looking up every single book on their phones. EVERY SINGLE ONE.
Best one, it is ok to walk away. Don’t feel bad or pressured by the dealers. You don’t have to buy the book. Always look around for the best deals and the right book for you. 👍🍻 cheers! Great video.
Awesome job! But seriously no tie? How can one be taken seriously without a proper Windsor knotted tie or if you’re really trying to make a point, the classic bow tie. 😂 This was great and I’m looking forward to the sequel. 🤘😎👍
Hi everyone, I hope some of you see this because it has bothered me a bit. I went to a comic show in my area and I was going through a $3 to $5 section. I pulled a book that I really wanted, but was not in that price range. I asked the booth holder if this was correct. He looked up ebay on his phone and no, it should be in the higher end boxes. He took it and offered me basically double the price he asked on the posted sign. I decided not to purchase it, because it came off a bit rude in how he handled the situation. Should I have just bought it the way he had it set up? Or is it more ethical to point it out to him before the purchase? Thank you!
Lol I had a guy bid on 18 different books on a live 3 day auction, then messages me, asking me to sell him other books on the on going auction at a discount, and when I said no, he deleted all his other bids .....
@@MintHunterComics your not supposed to, I reported him and he was removed from the group .... Just an example of a buyer being a jerk, thinking they had the power just because they were willing to spend money lol
As a seller if someone brings a stack, I auto assume a discount and rarely give sticker price -- should I always start with sticker and let the buyer negotiate from there?
Speaking of hogging bins. Many times I’m checking a bin and, without fail, people will come check the bins right next to me, even though the rest of place is empty. What is that?
I'm going to a smaller local show tomorrow morning. Every time I go people spend hours checking every single book. They want every book to be a 9.8. They bring out black lights for wall books. It's getting out of hand. They are blocking all the long boxes. I politely ask them If they can move down, and I get attitude. Forget about looking at the dollar bins or 50-cent bins. It is annoying and very rude.
I more regularly ask for a 20 percent discount on all eBay items I am interested in. It is a soft market + Holiday season now -- a total buyer's market through early 2024. As for the final etiquette tip, does it require tongue?
Sage advice from a man who has learned from experience. Perhaps for the next Seller side video, you can use one of those background effects. Perhaps a smoking jacket, pipe, and a roaring fireplace.
What is the best / most considerate way to approach a seller with a steep offer for an overpriced listing? Say . . . an $80 slab listed for $200 that might still be priced based on 2021 sales. Even asking for a 50% discount would usually be rude.
Sometimes the price tag is significantly higher than recent sales and the FMV. In those cases I might make a significantly lower offer than the price tag while pointing out recent eBay sales. The theory is that the seller either priced the book before a fall in price or simply made an error. Often the seller is agreeable to a lower price. I don’t like it when the seller says, “yeah, but you would have to pay shipping on that one,” for a number of reasons. The main one being, if he’s not shipping it to me why does he want me to pay for shipping? As always if an agreement can’t be reached it’s fine to walk away.
My brain is not wired for haggling. I'm like the pimp in Taken when Bryan (Liam Neeson) is pretending to haggle with the prostitute... "the price is the price". I went to my first ever comic book convention yesterday. A small local affair called Old Man Con in AZ. There, I accidentally haggled after finding out that one shop had John Byrne's Next Men #21. I had already spent a lot more than I intended at other vendors, and I was on my way out when I decided to ask. I said I would have to pass for now and asked about their brick-and-mortar location (thinking I could save a little then stop by for it), then they dropped the price 33% and I just had to buy it. Thank you, Fantastic Worlds Comics in Scottsdale for a good offer on a super-minty first color appearance of Hellboy in comic books. I never would have thought to ask for a price lower than the sticker. Now I have the whole series, and I'm seriously considering making my first submission to CGC. Sadly, I was collecting that series before moving across country and realizing I was now poor. I quit collecting comics two months before that issue was released.
None of my Lcs’s haggle which is kinda bogus and they are always at fmv on their wall books. One reason why I mainly just buy bags and boards only now from them. What you said should be all common sense, but there’s always one on the block….
This was a very good video. I've seen many of these things happen. Walking away from a deal that did not go as offered, or something has changed is okay. You will find a future deal. Also, I liked the suit you were wearing, and if I ever see you in your store I will give you a big hug and kiss 💋
Devils advocate as a buyer i have been screwed many times at lcs bx i didnt check grade. How many times that 5 dollar book had water damage all the way threw or had a page missing. Sorry that book is not 5 dollars. Im not a seller but some lcs have gotten mad at me for opening the bag to look at the grade. Im not rude but these r bin books im looking at not wall books. I also had the clerk open wall books an they tape damage the book. Oops its just me i guess but i want to know what im buying
Exemplary advice, Sir James. However, liquid sanitizer ain't going to cut it at my local comic shop. I'm not kissing anyone there without wearing my Hazmat suit.
Great video, what saddens me is that most of these should be common sense. The fact this video needs to be made at all shows how many just haven't been taught basic respect
Great list but What about the etiquette for sellers??, 1. please, please, please disclosed restoration.....2. be as accurate as possible with the grading. 3. Disclosed every flaw and be as accurate as possible. 4. Dont put outrageous prices that are way above fmv. 5. Dont show a listing with an inacurate picture and then send a comic that does not look in any way than the one shown during the sale😂. 6 good communication is essential in any business relation. 😂😂😂. 7. (Add your own issue with a seller😂)
@@MintHunterComics It's a joke. Guys always try to act tough. But if you say something they don't like they would take offense to it 🤷♂️ I saw how not to be a jerk and that came to mind
I feel bad now that I have never given you a wet kiss after purchasing books from you at your claim sale. Fantastic. Great information, keep those brows high!

If they're already overpriced - show them recent sales data - that's not being rude - do it politely though

a good smootch always helps with the haggling process
How about not bringing your pets into the store or making sure that you blow out the last cup of your cigarette before you enter
I had a guy taking over 4boxes, so I had to wait.
