One of the writers for this game, Matthew Jacobs was actually a professor of mine in a college writing class. Such an awesome man.

Great game! The main villain is voiced by Bull from Night Court and Two-Face. Want to see Matt play this till the end.
Most awesome part: you spare one of the men who killed your wife until he's dumb enough to mention her as you're walking away. The change of the MC's face is priceless.

Outlaws came out in 1997, only a few months before Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight came out the same year. It used the same engine that was used for the original Dark Forces, with the addition of some cool engine and gameplay features Dark Forces didn't have. Blood, Shadow Warrior, Quake II, Hexen II, and Interstate '76 also came out during 1997. It was quite a year for FPS games. Doom came out in 1993 and Doom II came out in 1994.
As for that box you tried to go through to get the key, you were supposed to press the "Use" key on it so you could push it. To use the dynamite, you're supposed to press the alt fire button first to ignite it, and then press primary attack to throw it. I know it's awkward, but that's how the game works. You can also sign those ledgers at the undertaker's: you just need to find the pen (I forget where it is in the level), and then use the pen on the ledgers.
The boss you killed at the end of the level is one of the thugs who work for the villain that kidnapped your daughter. "Spittin'" Sanchez is his name, I gather. The bosses are kind of like the gunslinger equivalents of the Seven Dark Jedi from Dark Forces II, except they're far more easier to kill. It's possible for you to complete the whole level without ending it too soon: you just need to avoid shooting Sanchez until you've done everything you want to do in the level before you want to end it. Killing Sanchez automatically ends the level. So long as you don't shoot Sanchez too soon, you can get every key and item, find every secret, open every locked door, and shoot every enemy before ending the level.
Outlaws is definitely one of the best Western games I've played. Two other great Western games which I think deserve comparison with Outlaws are Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath and Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive.

YESS!!!! I love this game! Jon De Lancie voiced one of the bad guys!!!!
Also this was one of the first FPSes where shooting a bad guy ina certain spot like the head, would cause more damage. That's why some enemies tend to be larger.

This is probably going to come off as too "boomer-shooter" of me to say, but I still regard this as my absolute favorite Western-themed FPS. Probably due to the Spaghetti Western aesthetics and soundtrack, along with the weapons feeling like they have actual impact in the game! And the story is wonderfully simple in the Old West good vs. bad kind of way! Dig "Outlaws" a TON!

Such a great game, really loved it as a kid and still do. Would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in FPS Western shooters.

Fun fact: They had couches way back in Ancient Rome!
Couches more comfortable than sitting on a pile of sharp rocks, though? Those probably weren’t invented till at least the 1960s.

Wow. I played the HELL out of this when it came out lo those many moons ago. This is another child of the famous "Build Engine" that also gave us Dark Forces and (maybe) Jedi Knight. Those Lucasarts shooters were the jam, just like everything else they did back then. This was also the very first game I remember where guns had ammo capacity and you had to reload them. Previously ammo was just a big pile, so if you had a hundred shotgun shells you could shoot it a hundred times in a row as fast as you could pull the trigger. Man, these graphics seemed a lot cooler 25+ years ago...

    • @Grease-Goblin
      @Grease-Goblin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

While similar to the Build engine, this was actually running on LucasArts' Jedi engine. Ken Silverman was responsible for the Build engine, and Ray Gresko made the Jedi engine, which was also used for Dark Forces.
Sorry to "well actually" you there.

    Lucasarts?…Lucasarts…now THAT’S a name I’ve not heard in a long time…a long time…
This was a standout during the Doom/Quake era of FPS clones, having a compelling story with a backdrop uncommon for the time. Shame this will never get a sequel or even a remaster.

I remember playing this game with my dad on our old IBM computer when I was a little kid. I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes old school Doom shooters as it does have a lot charm and character and can be pretty challenging even on normal difficulty.

    • @graver2570

Just wanted to add some things for people interested:
Unfortunately, Matt didn't seem to find that the game has an Alt-Fire for a lot of the weapons, this can be used to fan the hammer on the pistol to rapid fire at the cost of accuracy, fire both barrels on the double barrel shotty later in the game, and light the dynamite while throwing it. I've rarely seen games allow for fanning of six-shooters and this one just one of the little quirks that this old gem had.
As shown a few times in the video, most if not all of the enemies in the game have these little quips and taunts that really gave the game a nice flavour and made it stand out, even by today's standards. The quips also functioned as a clever way of telling the player if there was still enemies around that they missed, really cool!

    • @graver2570

The game launched as a 2-Disc game which was a real treat back in the 90's. Disc one was essentially the campaign mode we see here and disc two served as something akin to an expansion pack, which contained the "Historical Missions" seen in the video. These missions were loosely tied together via a sheriff's office hub level where you could select your mission by interacting with the wanted poster of each level's boss.
Lastly, you might need to tinker with the game to get music to work, but Outlaws had an honestly, brilliant soundtrack which would feel right at home among any old spaghetti western or John Wayne picture. I'd say it's even worth looking it up on YT. The game is on GOG last time I checked and there's a lot to love in it. It's surely outdated and you'll probably want to tinker with the controls but it's easily a game the really returns on it's investment.
Thanks for giving this one a look Matt!🙂

I swear my dad brought home a demo of this game when I was like idk, 9? The ammo counter and health just looks super familiar, the intro cutscene doesn't which is why I'm assuming it was a demo or like the first level share-ware. Edit - yeah yeah yeah this was totally it, I remember the underwater bit in the well. Holy shit.

An awesome game from my childhood! One of the very first computer games my dad introduced me to back in the day, in fact. I used to love messing around with the cheat codes and flying around the outside of the train level. I find Outlaws has aged very well, and is still every bit as fun as it was in '97. Good times.

I know this might be a little random. But there was a Western arcade shooter (like Time Crisis) that I played on the PS1, called Gunfighter: The Legend of Jesse James. It's honestly real fun and a good game. Yet I near NO ONE talking about it, at all.
