The vent in front of VW bus can be taped up and you can cover up with cardboard and tape. This will block any drafts coming into the bus.

Suggestion: Buy some hand warmers and put them under or on top of your toes. I do this regularly for bicycling in cold weather. Because you're sitting your body isn't circulating enough blood to keep your toes warm and extra insulation doesn't seem to help much. The hand warmers are like $10 for 10 pair, and each set lasts several hours.

Maybe you should stop at Walmart and in the camping section pick up a buddy heater that runs on small propane cylinders that you can use indoors. I have one and I just love it! It is safe. It’s only going to keep getting colder and colder the more east you travel. And yes, New York is freezing cold but probably a little warmer in the city vs. upstate where I am from.

Louie, to keep your feet warm you need to get some 8hr handwarmer things that are made for feet and are called toewarmers and each pack has 2 adhesive heat packs that you stick to each foot. You may only need one for each foot in those temps. But today I was in -10 to -30 and I had two stuck to each foot and didn't have any foot discomfort the whole day, so they can work well.

You are proving what I have suspected that lithium batteries don't perform so well in cold weather and once it's minus temperature they might not even accept a full charge . It's going to get more difficult as you go further north. Good luck.

    • @zachmoyer1849
      @zachmoyer1849 ปีที่แล้ว +4

they remedy this issue in teslas by bypassing the radiatior and circulating waste heat from the motors through the batteries while driving limiting range loss they also do this before charging by (i think) sending opposing forces to the motor creating heat but no motion to warm the batteries allowing a full charge in colder environments there is still a loss but much less than what louie is seeing by not having a similar system in his diy version i think if he disables his cooling system his range wont drop so dramatically

Since your van is DIY, I don't know the circuitry used, but lithium batteries must not be charged under a certain temperature and if they have protection circuits, thy may simply shut off the system for protection. In some of the batteries used in RVs, they have insulation and part of the electricity is used to keep the battery warm

There are a few companies recycling lithium ion batteries but the vast majority of the toxic materials will end up in landfills. More child slaves from the Congo will have to mine more Cobalt for the new batteries....

If you could have fans cooling the battery, inverter and engine sending the air through pipes and have a thermostat that directs the right amount of hot air into the car and the excess hot air out of the car, you could improve the temperature in your car. Maybe not as much as an ICE car since they give a huge amount of heat but maybe an improvement.

Cali was Absolutely Adorable in the restaurant, she's doing so great on this trip.
I'm currently using an oil heater in my van trying to stay warm.
    Merry Christmas!

for where you barely fit and was touching the roof I would suggest letting a little air out of your tires then putting it back in when you leave the garage.

Toe warmers at Walmart. They stick in your boots. Work great.

Pump your front tyres up to near their maximum your steering will be lighter then. Change down on the long gradients..you may be doing this already..if so ignore. Use expand ing foam as a temporary measure to seal out draughts in the front..hot hands and feet warmers are the way to go..Bon Voyage.

You're in my hometown! I grew up 100 miles northeast of Memphis, right off the interstate. Memphis can be pretty sketchy, but the area where you were (Beale Street) is a well patrolled tourist area, and there is less to worry about around there. I wish I could have put you in contact with a friend who is in a group called Metropolitan Avenue. They play on Beale frequently.

Awesome but one thing this tells me electric is very unreliable, you need more back ups with solar panels on roof , and bigger or more batteries as that would cause too much stress with always running out electric

There is an amazing RV park in West Memphis called Tom Sawyers. Right on the river! You can watch the barges go by all night. Great spot!!

You should get a rubber mat for the footwell. A long one that goes in the back seat of a van or truck.

Heated Socks available on Amazon 👍😎 Also the east coast is a damp cold that creeps into your bones, and not a dry cold like the west coast🥶
