  • One of the oldest running state houses/capitols in the U.S. is in Ohio, which was built from 1839 to 1861. Some changes have been made since, but it still retains its historical charm. Abraham Lincoln had visited the building twice and his body was laid there temporarily.
Located in downtown Columbus, the State House features both state Senate and House chambers and of course, the Governor's Office (none of which are accessible to the public). There is also a museum, gift shop, and plenty of art and old pictures inside the building. Guided tours are available as well.
Outside the State House are several monuments including one to Christopher Columbus, the city's namesake.
To visit the Ohio State House, no reservations are necessary (unless for large groups). Parking is available under the state house (fees may apply).
The Ohio State House has been added to the National Register of Historic Places (1972) and became a National Historic Landmark in 1977.
