This is half of the original quantity. I found it to be enough to feed 3-4 people. This soup is delicious, though very buttery! Ron was full after just 1 bowl. Now that's saying a lot! Thank you for watching ^_^ To make Onion Soup, 1796 5 cups of water 3 Spanish onions, cut 1/4 pound of butter + 1 additional tablespoon of butter 2 tablespoons of flour + 1 additional tablespoon 1 heaping tablespoon of grated parmesan cheese Pepper & salt to taste (be generous with the pepper) Bring your water to a boil. Meanwhile in a bowl toss your cut onions with 2 tablespoons of flour. Toss well until evenly coated. In a skillet melt 1 tablespoon of butter on medium heat. Once melted throw in your onions rolled in flour. Cook until softened & browned. Transfer into a deep pot. Pour boiling water over your onions. Add salt, pepper, parmesan cheese and 1/4 pounds of butter rolled in 1 tablespoon of flour. Simmer for 1.5 hours, being sure to skim frequently. Dispose of any scum that forms on the surface. Enjoy with toasted bread. The original recipe (1796) also suggests enjoying with poached eggs & spinach for a complete meal.
Your videos are so comforting. I was in a horrible nursing/rehab place and was miserable. Your videos transported me to a calm place. Thank you so much ❤
I know your pain and frustrations. Same here. Her videos are so awesome. I hope life begins to become more easy, and filled with love and beautiful things. You got this. You are not alone 🙏🏼💛💛💛💛💛 I always try to remember to do something I love, the world right now is FULL of awfulness. Let’s just take it one day , one task . One step at a time 🙏🏼💛 Sending love
Have you heard of mrs crocombe here on youtube? The channel is all about recreating recipes from the victorian era. Really cool and i find they give off a similar vibe
Watching Justine’s reaction to cutting the onions reminded me of my first job I ever had in high school. I worked at a small family diner that was known for their “onion burgers”. I would have to slice up a 2 pound bucket of onions with a deli slicer every day after school. It was just as bad as you can imagine…
LOL, I had a job at a pizza place that had an old french fry chopper for the onions. You know the one with a square cutting blade and a handle you pulled down to shove the potato through? Because of the layers of onion they'd come out nicely diced for the pizzas. The only problem was that it was stuck to the wall over the sink at eye level. It was impossible to use it without squirting juice all over your face.
I think I had a mild sensitivity to potato starches or oil in the skin. But when I was younger I would itch like crazy when peeling potatoes. Even though I could eat any potato product no problem.
I haven’t watched the video yet, but I just had to comment first just how much I LOVE your videos! Very calming, interesting, & educational. Thanks for sharing with us❤
@@EarlyAmerican I'm planning on making this tonight or tomorrow. It looks so good! Your channel has become one of my faves on youtube, and so has Frontier Patriot.
My German mother made something very similar Instead of boiling onions in water she used beef stock then stale bread was added at the end. She called it Brotsuppe and served it with potatoe pancakes. It was wonderful. A real WWII survival meal
I know! Have you ever been around folks raised in the 1920s or so? It reminds me of how their living/entertaining area was often the kitchen and only household members or special company (like maybe the President, if they wiped their feet first) didn't go into the rest of the house except to pee/poop. It's a dying practice.
I made the soup and am currently baking the bread in my cast iron Dutch oven. I can't wait for dinner! This is perfect today. I cleaned out the chicken house while the bread was rising and prepped it for winter, and now I'm watching Bama play Tennessee. Perfect fall weekend!
The onion soup looks so delicious, I already put onions on my shopping list. And, I have to say, today's dress with the purple apron is one of your prettiest.
So cosy! It's surprisingly similar to my French Onion Soup recipe, though this might be a good option to try when we're on a tighter budget (because, really, who isn't these days??) because it omits things like wine or Worcestershire sauce and excessive butter. I can't wait to give this one a spin!
We have your uploads playing on the TV in the background whilst I cook dinner and the children do their homework. It is so relaxing and every now and again the kids look up from their books to see what you are doing. It makes for a lovely calming cosy atmosphere at the end of the day. Absolutely love what you do. Much love from Australia ❤
As always such awesome videos, the fact you do not talk really makes it feel like legit sounds one would have heard in the pioneer days, absolutely love it, keep up the awesome work , ~ prairie hen pioneer
This is definitely something I can get into. My husband and I love onion soup and I bet with the Parmesan. It is absolutely delicious! Good job on cooking the soup and the bread.
I truly enjoy your videos. I'm our family historian and your videos help me to visualize what it may have been like for my early American ancestors. Thank you!🙂
Ate far better than the average person now. My mum is Caribbean and I was horrified when I first came to the States at what people called food. Horrible. My mum prepared our food all the time so this reminds me of just how we ate daily. Never tasteless frozen meals or fast food. I still think fast processed food is awful.
I love history. I love food. Your videos are always good to just relax to but I always get hungry watching the preparation. I have already made the dishes you make sometimes in your videos for months now. I enjoy the thought that our meals are still enjoyed today. Keep doing what you doin'.
I’m totally going to make this! Pretty sure I can adapt it to a slow cooker. You guys are so awesome … love watching Justine make the recipes and love hearing the rooster in the background! 🐔
Your timing is impeccable, Justine. I've just come down with a cold (today, as a matter of fact), and I'm going to have to try my hand at making this soup. I love French onion soup, and this looks absolutely divine! Thank you and Ron both, as always, for doing what you do! Cheers! 😊
I don't know why, but I think all the tools you have for cooking in the fireplace are just so cool! You can do just about anything w/ just flame & coals. Love the bread toaster! And I never knew what that funky shaped lid on the Dutch oven was for...it's to hold the coals! And it works so well. Makes me want to come play in your kitchen😊
I made the Cheesy Onion Soup for dinner tonight! This is the second recipe I've tried this week since I found your channel and both of them have been winners!!! ❤❤
I love that cute little home 🏡, I could live in a home like that. Nearby stream of fish.chicke coop. Peaceful surroundings. ✌🏾 And, a massive fireplace 😊
I had a question about the ironware, i know that during those times a blacksmith made it by hand . I wondered how expensive it was and how long it took to make. Thanks so much for the awesome videos!
I would love to make this soup!! It looked like the best version of onion soup ,I have seen. I love the creamy comforting look of the broth. Yeah Justine You knocked it out of the park. ❤👍🍲

Do you have one nearby? Also, love your recipes! Have tried several and have gotten a Chef’s Kiss each time! Love all you do to keep your channel consistent! ❤
I made the soup! It turned out delicious. Doubled your receipt since there’s 5 in my family, and I used a hand blender to make it less chunky. Paired it with some French bread and it was perfect on this rainy Wednesday. Thanks for sharing it!! 🧅🧅

This would be a good meal on a cool fall day. I was surprised with using butter that MishMish was around. Lol Thank you for another wonderful cooking video!

As always, that looks divine, Justine! I hope you're having a glorious fall!🍁🍂🍁I'll see you next week and catch the C & C after Bible study. Be blessed sweet bride to be! xoxo
Hello from Rwanda. I just tried making this. I used far too much flour, so it's very thick but yummy. A good way to use up some onions. It's also very hard to get parmesan here, so added a dollop of garlic cream cheese and it made it nice and creamy. Thanks for the recipe. 😊
I adore this receipt. I'm going to try this in a few days. Thanks for showing how to make this and all the things you used to do it. Take Care and Stay Safe.
Feeling those onion tears! I heard if you chew gum while cutting onions you won’t tear up. I’ll have to try it! Soup looks incredible as always thanks for sharing this treasured recipe!
It looks wonderful . Did the ladies back then worry much about the fire? The long skirts and petticoats and such could catch an ember especially if one’s attention was on the cooking. I enjoy the chanel very much FB

I once worked for a restaurant that bought me swim goggles to shield my eyes. I bawl like a baby when cutting the smallest onion. 😄

I dont know how i missed this video! It looks so yummy and i can smell the onions. Well in the early 1980s we used the onion skins to dye eggs too.❤
