      I'm just finishing up the game name after not having played it since 2006/2007. I really enjoyed it. My biggest gripe is just how you can have the most powerful items in the game be completely RNG on chests even appearing. Unless if you looked at a guide you'd never know that you completely missed things.
      I really enjoy everything else about the game though. The license and gambit systems are great.

    • @GG256_
      @GG256_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@I_Am_The_Social_Reject Dude i totally agree. Maybe this has to do with the ages I played the game versions. I had 100 hours back in the day on PS2, but playing Zodiac Age changes everyones job stylings and license board feel to different linear options. The original settings made me feel like I could customize each character into a powerhouse equally. I mean i know technically it adds more variety this way, but it feels like it neuters the cast just for the sake of “shaking things up.” Like someone said “nah you can’t break this anymore like you could.” (Even though apparently you still can.) Many people say the zodiac gimmick adds depth and fixes the tedium of licenses. It just feels like a tacked on after thought that forces something unnecessary. When I played 12 ZA, no matter how much I loved the atmosphere and world, it felt so empty and more like an MMO with no else online, rather than a single player experience in a world with the scope of an MMO. (Like i remember feeling in the 2000’s.) Xenoblade is a better execution of this type of JRPG in every way, but I understand this was first by a large margin. Its sad because I agree with the notion of unrealized potential. If they had the balls to make Ashe the protag, removed Vaan and Penelo, and fixed the heavy handed dialogue, this game may be as beloved as 10.

      You do not fight yourself, everything is gambits and auto attacks . You only walk and dish once a while a manual command to someone else.
      Battle system is too convoluted and those dumb lines who indicate who attacks who. I know you can get rid of em in settings BUT
      that they thought it will be needed shows what kind of idiots worked at that game. They ruined it, if this would have been round based,
      it could have been the best FF, with great monsters to summon etc. Those live action battles dont work. It becomes a shit product !!

    • @Yurikon3
      @Yurikon3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@Preceyese-Seyeght Hooboy. Gambits just reveal that most of JRPG combat is just pressing X in proper order and gambits are made to override that aspect. They are optional game mechanic and most likely people had done same actions with just more tedium. It is more of the problem of JRPG (turn based) systems than gambits itself. If anything gambits should be must to any game which has AI-controlled allies. Old school turn based combat was mostly tedious and was made because of the technical limitations.
      And battle system honestly wasn't that much different from regular JRPG combat. It uses same ATB system as previous ones and technically this game still works in turn based mode. Lines can be set off so... what's the point? Calling it convoluted is overstatement as best. Summons were unnecessary at worst.

    Personally, I never felt like Venat was controlling anyone. Venat merely looked for humans that had the ambition and drive that aligned with it's own goals. It's said several times in the game that Vayne and Cid's relationship with Venat is that they see it as a friend.

    • @arselcrusader5600
      @arselcrusader5600 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Think so too honestly, else if he controlled them, he'd be worse than the ones he's going against. As proof that they're friends, Venat had no reason to be in the Bahamut as his goal of destroying the Sun-Cryst had been accomplished.

    • @deathseraph3
      @deathseraph3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Yeah I tilted my head at that part. It's still humanity vs humanity. Venat chose a side and gave what they could to the people that like OP said, had the drive and ambition to do what they all wanted. I don't get the feeling Vayne or Cid needed convincing that the occuria didn't deserve to dictate the way the people should be. Ultimately, it's still Vayne that needs to be stopped and not some secret villain you didn't know about. I'd also say that the occuria don't really come out of nowhere, but that's just me.

    • @xxJing

      @@meapickle Yet less linear than IV, as the game actually opens up when you get to Gran Pulse, and you can change your party instead of running with Porom and Palom. Playing SNES FF4, I quit halfway through because it was like watching a movie, nothing you did changed anything... trying to finish it now on PC.
      But good luck kicking out those annoying twins and running with best characters Kain, Rydia and Yang... no, you're stuck with what game gives you. For most of 13 too, but not ALL of it like IV!
      I like FF4, but it's as linear as it gets, you literally cannot change anything, not even spell learning order, weapons or classes! That stuff is customizable in 13, not in 4. The only customization in which are augments in 3D remake.
      And yeah FF12 had enemies on map yeah, but it didn't have separate battle scenes, and IIRC you couldn't backstab them to make strikes and distance didn't matter (see Fang shooting point blank with a bow in this video). AGHAST AND ALACK, SAVE US HEROES!" followed by " WE'RE SAVED FOREVER THANK YOU SO MUCH!" once you beat the big bad and recover the Gilded McMuffin of Glory.

If you know the complete lore of FFT then FF12 makes a lot more sense because it’s supposed to depict the world that was FFT’s past. FFTA2 actually drives this point further home. FFTA2 takes place roughly 2 years after FF12 but in the portion of the world that would become the setting for FFT. FFTA2 has almost no main story, there is one but it’s so irrelevant that I don’t even remember it, the game is about doing sidequests that flesh out the world, your main character is really irrelevant. I love how large the gameworld was. So many areas you could ONLY find when you go out exploring and not even part of the main story path. I love the hidden summon boss fights, and the chain attacks in the combat system. Not to mention the whole storyline and how amazing the characters are. Vayne is one of the most multi-layered villains in the series. I loved grinding for hours and how much FUN it is due to the gambit system, and I loved beefing up m party and getting the latest spells and weapons. And the soundtrack...just wow.

    I’m going to ‘slightly’ disagree with you about the Star Wars comparison. I at the very least feel like it was inspired by Star Wars. I do agree that a lot of haters of the game just use it as an excuse to write it off entirely which is extremely frustrating but for me that was a huge plus.
    The first FF I ever played was 10 and the Star Wars movies were a HUGE part of my childhood. So when 12 came out it felt like the perfect mixture of 2 things I absolutely loved. To me FF12 felt like it took a similar concept to SW but went an entirely different direction with it.

      Thing is, a lot of Final Fantasy games took inspiration from Star Wars. FF4's villain, Golbez, was designed after Darth Vader. FF2 and FF6's plots are much stronger examples of "Empire vs. rebels" by comparison. That, to me, just makes it all the weirder for this game to be the one that people look at as being a copy-paste of Star Wars. Even if there are some loose comparisons, how is that a problem? The creators of the Final Fantasy were fans of Star Wars, and a lot of stories tend to borrow elements from other stories. But it's definitely not a copy-paste like so many people claim.

    Everyone wonders why Vaan stays and how he's connected to everything... but fail to remember the tutorial where you play as his brother who was killed by Gabranth, twin brother to Basch, who was framed for everything.
    Vaan and Penelo are also a reminder as to what the more "learned" members of the party are fighting for... The youth. There's also an implied mentorship between Balthier and Vaan, along with Fran and Penelo.
    As you said, there's a lot of subtext in FF12, so I believe every character has solid motivations for sticking around to the end (including Penelo... though it's the weakest of them all)

    I love the gambit system except for its implementation of stealing. There's no good way to avoid having your character stealing over and over from an enemy that's already been plucked bare. You can use the "enemy 100% HP" gambit, but that still doesn't help if your other characters are busy with another enemy and haven't gotten around to hitting it.
    Fortunately if you have the PC version you can mod it so the steal gambit only targets enemies that actually have something to steal. Makes it a lot less aggravating to play.

    Matsuno is fantastic at writing setups, intrigue, tension, stakes... Then throw it all away with some godlike enemy for the player to overcome. You can really tell he fumbled at the goal line with games like FFT and XII, but they're still generally enjoyable. The most impressive thing to me is that XIV is clearly heavily inspired by his writing style, and on that game they also suddenly pivoted to godlike beings manipulating things from the shadows, hell they even reused lots of nomeclature from XII like Venat being the one that went against their original design. And yet, in that game it works way better, the story in XIV is of course much, much more lengthy than any other Final Fantasy with updates still added. But it goes to show that Matsuno was this close to knock it out of the park every time.

    • @jonathankozenko
      @jonathankozenko 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed -- With that, I would argue that one thing FFT did better than XII was that it had numerous stand-alone emotional climaxes during throughout the journey. Like, Teta's portion of the story is intensely tragic, and it concludes with the first Chapter. The most emotional beats of FFT aren't related to the main villain or the struggle against him, so when his portion emotionally falls flat, it's not as big of a problem as it was with 12. At least I'd argue so.

      One thing to keep in mind with FF12 is Matsuno didn't actually finish it. He famously had a mental breakdown halfway through development and resigned from Square Enix, and Akitosha Kawazu, the SaGa guy, was put in charge of finishing 12.
      I know Tactics also went from political intrigue to fighting the supernatural, but I still wonder how much of 12's lost potential was because of the change in leadership.

    The problem with FF12 is it lacks the element that most FF games typically nail and make them so great. And that is character development and interplay between characters that shows their bond growing and adheres you to them. This game hardly gives any time to develop any of its characters besides their initial introduction. It's villains suffer the same fate, everyone gushes about how cool Gabranth is but in the whole game he gets like 5 minutes of screen time before his boss fight. This is made worse by the fact that all the villains wear their helmets most of the time and on your first playthrough it is difficult to even tell them apart because the helmets are so similar. in the whole 40-50 hour main story there is like two or three scenes where any of the party members actually do or say something that shows they care for another party member and most of the time its Balthier... Funny how Balthier seems to be most peoples favorite character... wonder why that is.

    • @Yurikon3
      @Yurikon3 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. When people complain about gambits, they are really complaining about the true nature of turn based combat. People romanticize the past's turn based tedium cause there really wasn't other option. There are good reasons why auto-battle is an option in remasters. After learning the stuff, games just become tedium of same inputs. At least with gambits the focus can be redirected to other benefits of JRPG genre.

    Yep. This is a game that's been on my "Will play eventually" list. Seeing you breakdown the basics of the gambit system reminds me of how much fun I had playing Dragon Age and Dragon Age 2. After my Four Job Fiesta run of FFV I'll be playing FFXII next!
    Thank you!
    Also the reason you need the different options for "do this action when you HP is at or below X" is for different situations. For example for bosses you probably want 40% or 30% depending on how much damage they are doing. If the boss is doing 33% damage per big attack then having your ability trigger at 30% means it'll never proc and your character will probably die, vs 40% will mean it'll most likely trigger.
    But when fighting mobs you want to have their selfheal trigger at a lower HP amount due to having significantly less chances of seeing chunks of HP being removed. For those you want 20% or even 10% to trigger in order to save recourses. Otherwise every time your unit is at a little under half HP they'll over heal causing you to waste so many resources when you weren't in any risk of dying.
    I haven't played the game but I have played other games where you can set parameters like this, but maybe this level of optimization is overkill for the game. But that's why they have the multiple variants of the same thing.
    Edit: That scene you showed, I understood everything without you needing to explain the subtext. This is probably due to playing a lot of Fantasy games and table top RPG. If the WHOLE game is like this I definitely NEED to play it!

    I remember this game so fondly. I had my most intense boss battle, ever, in this game. The battle took nearly 2 hours to win! I was extremely under leveled for the boss, to the point that all of my characters could only take 1 or 2 hits before they died. It came to the point that i was always on the brink of dying, only having 1 character alive, fleeing for my life around the area. My strategy was to revive a character before I got my final death blow on the only one alive. The damage I took from getting totally annihilated by the boss was enough to get a limit break every time. So the revived caracter could limit break once when it was revived, then revive another character before he was killed. Rinse and repeat. Chipping away small bits of the boss health for hours. It was only lucky that I had enough revives. I was so god damn proud of myself when I finally beat the boss! I don't remember the bosses name, I think it was Gilgamesh! It was a samurai person with a dog of some sort, in a cave or something. I think Cid was nearby. Anyway, best moment in my Final Fantasy memories. ❤️

    FF12 is definitely too subtle for it's own good. When I first played it I spent 300 hours getting to the end, and replayed it many times since. And I really loved digesting the plot.
    And I would say the 'lack of emotion' is a part of what is going on. Cid is particularly interesting because it is so layered. With Cid and gabranth they are letting themselves be used as tools. And when they lose it is what is desired by both sides. So while there is sadness, there is other emotions that are more prevalent.
    Larsa's circumstances are similar but even less sympathetic to his brother because he was craving power to rule. And both he and larsa were basically groomed to kill each other for political power.
    Cid wanted humans to be able to control their destinies outside of the control of the fake gods. And when we get to the point they are finally revealed. There were already warnings there was going to be these things. It was just vague until we actually see them.
    The fake gods were actually playing the political game, and that is actually the major conflict in the game. Cid and venat win, and Ashe and larsa are the beneficiaries, while vayne is the scapegoat.
    The mist is the real "macguffin" the stones and the swords are just a way to harness the power of the mist.
    The occuria wanted Ashe to cut a stone out for herself so she can help cause the war and create more destruction. To seemingly kill more people and add to the power of the mist overall.
    But cid created artificial nethicite which enabled humans to harness mist without the occuria's control. And Ashe refused to be seduced by power. By listing to the warning from her ancestor, and rejecting the false gods.
    And poor penelo, she has a small story where she is strongly connected to vaan, and their relationship seemingly develops quite a bit. And she looks up to Fran. But like Fran and balthier, and Ashe and basch. Penelo and vaan feel like a pair that were designed to be together.
    Basch's main shortcoming of feeling like he doesn't have enough to do is most likely a result of the shift forced on by the higher ups who didn't want basch to be the primary protagonist.

I was too poor to ever afford playing an mmorpg and saved forever to get ff12 on my barely working Ps2. I never played an mmorpg but I heard what they were like, and the party traveling a vast world doing quests or hunts and every now and then maybe a friendly NPC with a green life bar would join and fight alongside you was what I believed mmo’s were, so I freely called it that.
    Also English isn’t my main language. I played the game start to finish without understanding a lick of the plot lol. That progression marker CARRIED me. I AM playing the Zodiac Age version now finally understanding the plot (after years of doing theater I ADORE the “flowery” language) and I’m loving it. The story for 12 is just awesome and i love the perspective of Vaan, not being the main character of the story you are in but your connection to it. Balthier is the coolest character ever. So under rated.

    Absolutely love this game, and its sequel on the DS - Revenant Wings, is my favourite DS game to date; I have a massive softspot for the plot of the sequel and its villains especially! Judge of Wings was honestly such a clever concept, given the story and themes of the first game. I wasn't expecting much of a tie, and tbh, it definitely sets itself apart, but the Judge of Wings set a narrative evolution off the plot of the first game, and even challenges some of the ideals the first game presented us as "good", with very compelling counter-arguements..
    Plus, WORLD BUILDING. Both XII and its sequel are absolutely PHENOMENAL at world-building. I got so invested in the Tactics universe through the two XII games, enough to go back and play Tactics and Tactics Advanced, which are both games I also really like for their own reasons!
    As a final note: I think the judge system is such a badass concept in world, and I still stand by that Espers and the Paradigm Wheel are the coolest iterations of the Summoning system (from a narrative sense) that to this day, FF has ever blessed us!
    EDIT: when you were on to debunk the stupid Star Wars argument, I thought about another reason I really liked the sequel too: Revenant Wings takes perhaps the most unimportant party member of XII's narrative: Pennelo, and gives her in many regards, the spotlight in the story. If Ashe is the main character of the first game, Pennelo and Vaan are the main characters of the second, with Balthier actually taking a mentorship role this time around.
    The sequel does so much to flesh out ALL of our established characters, with new supporting roles joining the party to help drive them further. I absolutely love the characters from both games because of this!

    Personally, I like how half the cast aren't directly linked to the main conflict in the way that Ashe, Basch and Balthier are. If nobody in the party can just be 'some guy' without being coincidentally necessary to plot resolution, the whole thing feels less relatable.
    Vaan's big character payoff was in Ridorana when Ashe looked at him last while deciding to use the sun-cryst or destroy it, they both calmed down and wordlessly reminded each other that they were doing this for the future of Rabanastre, not their own personal vengeances. Vaan even went from combat ready to calmly rebutting the man who killed his brother, who was trying to provoke him.

    I honestly love some of the characters not having any development, I think it adds up well into the story. A kid who got dragged into a bigger plot because of other characters, a "pirate" with hidden intentions, a princess and her knight,etc. None of them truly have the same agenda, its the situations that gather them all together and eventually they set out on what they should do but for the most part each and every one of them has an agenda of their own which is why I don't think characters like Penelo are exactly weak characters, they are just a nice addition to a more believable plot. Which is what sets XII apart from other FFs which would rather embrace the angst teenage-like aesthetics and plot

    I've always been drawn towards the world and characters of this game, and I love the Gambit system! It always felt like a light programming software built into the game, full of setting up variables depending on the circumstances. It's super fun, and I really like the aesthetic as well. And with you bringing up its shortcomings, it makes me really want to see what this game would have been if it was given more time to flesh out the more personal elements of the plot. A friend accidentally turned me onto this game by giving me that very game case. I warmed up to it pretty fast & played through the whole game for roughly two years. There's a theme of civilizations in their various stages of development and advancement- The Eruyt Village, Jahara, The Sochen Cave Palace, Rabanastre & Archades. The other main theme is best borrowed from a quote by Doctor Cid "Take the reins of history back into the hands of man." This theme affects pretty much every character from Lady Ashe to Balthier to Vaan, albeit in different ways because they walked different journeys in life. I thought the voice acting was amazing when I first heard it, though obviously some voice actors shine through much more... Balthier & Fran in particular stood out to me. As a kid, I didn't understand the politics of the storyline & primarily wanted to fight monsters...but, as an adult, I get it much better. Thank God I never got the Star Wars impression... It's interesting how the plot keeps you wondering which way Lady Ashe will lean in her pursuit of the power behind nethicite. It's a great game & one of the few times a fantasy game drew me in with its style, gameplay & characters (my other favorite being Kingdoms of Amalur).

I spent hours reading all the bestiary entries to learn a bit more about that fascinating world, and, as of today, I feel I will never have an experience like that again. I remember when this game first came out. It was getting so much praises for its technical achievement and presentation, usually with the highest scores across the board. I also loved it, it was like an MMORPG that you can play offline and still very much enjoy. The monster hunting side-quests were one of my favorites. It would take years later to find out that it actually was not that beloved by many traditional fans, and while I can understand that side of opinion, I still think that this is a great game on its own and one that marked the end of an era. XII took a long to come out, but after it, sequels would take even longer and longer, where today the mainline FF games have gone out of focus.
