My daughter had a slight speech impairment at 3, which was fine by 5. I was surprised because she started talking early in daycare. It’s sad for the children when people don’t understand the difference between a speech impairment and autism. A lot of kids have speech issues and they get corrected on their own, or diagnosed later. There’s a stigma around Autism, your child gets labelled and it follows them around their entire childhood, and some people don’t understand it enough. There are different levels of severity and lengths of how long it may last. Thankfully for my daughter, her speech has been perfect since 5 years old. She speaks more articulately than most adults I know. Those teachers deserve every dollar they get paid!

My daughter has just turned 3 she got her autism diagnosis about 3 weeks ago. She actually started babbling and saying words normally. Mimicked me and responded to her name. Then at 11 months it all stopped. I thought she had hearing problems. She totally went into her own world. Lost all her words. Then other behaviours starting showing up. Spinning obsessively, lining toys up, walking on tip toes. Didn’t point or wave. No eye contact and very little understanding and generally very difficult. But even as a young baby she hated busy places. Hated sunlight with a passion. She started nursery in August and she’s made so much progress, she’s in a room for kids with additional needs which has helped. Now she parrots words back echolalia as you mentioned. She sings more than she speaks lol can’t pronounce most of the words but her tune is amazing. Can recognise numbers, letters and colours. Again mostly it’s sounds but you know what she’s saying. She loves people now! But she would go with a stranger. Still no awareness of danger and not a lot of pointing but we are getting there. She also hand flaps though her new stim is grinding her teeth 😩she can sound out letters on signs. And she can say her colours in Spanish! I watched your video about sings up until 2 and I totally agree with TH-cam videos or educational videos being able to help with their learning. What people don’t realise is trying to get an autistic child to focus on you and give you a lot of eye contact is extremely difficult so these videos help so much. It’s how my daughter knows all her nursery rhymes and can count, say her alphabet. She also watches screens for a loooong time. Won’t lie it’s handy if we are out lol. When she was 7 months she would sit and watch the full film and not make a peep. Same when she’s in a car she is silent on long trips it’s amazing. Thanks for this video. Was very in formative

He hasn't officially been diagnosed with autism, but he also has a tongue tie. It's very hard having a neuro divergent and non verbal child but he is such a blessing to me and I Love him with all my heart. He is starting to do more things that we have been working with him on in therapy sessions but speech is still our struggle. I’ve learned a lot of his cues so we have our own way of communicating with each other but it’s still really hard. We finally got approved for a safety sleeper and will be getting that in September but that was a struggle too.

Im a mom to a son with (we believe have) a speech delay and i never had a chance to have him evaluated so i started looking up why at 18months he was still not resonding or even making sense. Not even giving interest in communicating with us. As horrible as it may sound, I was devastated and was crying like crazy. My husband who had M.A in speech pathology consoled me that our son was normal but as a mother i dont want to just believe him. I was more than willing to accept it if he happend to have ASD. i started watching vids how to do early intervention for ASD nd speech delay. After about 6months, he had very promising improvement that i started to believe my husband. Parents like you really helped me get through the challenge and i cant thank you enough. Its always a blessing to have children like ours.

Very interesting... I can see my child in both your boys to an extent. She is somewhat speech delayed, and she doesn't mimic speech, but she does mimic actions, she has some signs and a few words but they are mostly vowel sounds. She is 20 months and I hope we can get an evaluation soon because I don't have much of a perspective on what's normal, especially since neurodiversity, ADHD, autism and speech delays run in my family and I personally have ADHD and also have some social difficulties. Therefore it's hard for me to assess... she makes eye contact but not much eye contact, and I don't know how much is normal, because I also don't make much eye contact, for example. I appreciate your perspective without the scary language of red flags and it's lovely to see you enjoying your adorable children with their differences.

Thank you for your positive outlook on autism! It really doesn't feel nice when people act like there is something wrong with you. It is researched that we generally receive more negative input than non-autistic people, especially as developing children, and adding that extra weight that you have "failed" to grow into a "normal" person (which is beyond your control) can cause a lot of mental health, self-esteem and confidence challenges. So again, thank you! Your boys are so lucky to have you!

Your sons are gorgeous. Our oldest has autism and our youngest seems to have a speech delay. He only babbles (no mama yet), but he communicates, plays with us, shows me things and uses a lot of gestures. You are right with speech vs. Communication. I can’t help every once in a while wondering is he too has autism, but the signs in my oldest was much more clear. From lining up toys, to the tantrums due to lack of communication, as well as difficulty with play. Keep doing what your doing. They are all unique and amazing in their own ways.

Thank you for making these videos. I'm sure they help lots of parents who are facing the same situation. I myself I'm not a parent but an aunt. I have worked with children and kids with autism before, and noticed that my nephew was exhibiting similar behaviours. Between ages 2-3 he was not speaking, apart from the odd word or two. He screamed a lot, concentrated only on one toy at a time for ages, did not respond to his name, covered his ears, and hardly interacted playfully with his older siblings. He is now 4 and although his vocabulary has increased (he can string 3 words "put it on"), he still does not respond to his name or even say his name, he is definitely not speaking the number of words expected at his age. He is a very intelligent boy however, he can read and count much more compared to his nursery mates. The problem is, my sister denies there is any issue. I don't know how to gently suggest she takes him to her GP without breaking her heart. She is also a very anxious person and has been having panic attacks because of the pandemic.

    ◦ I have been crippled with anxiety over our just turned 3 year old son and am so confused. I lose so much sleep and drive myself crazy! He’s been evaluated by ECI early childhood development) and a SLP (my request his old pediatrician could care less) and he passed” both but I still have my concerns. He was adopted at 2 months. He has 3 full bio siblings and 1 half sibling (different biological father). The half bio sibling has been dx with ASD.
Here are the things that are wonderful that make me feel like he’s doing well:
-He met all his milestones on time, walking was a tad late at 16 months but he cruised furniture for ages. Smiling on time, mimicking, laughing, clapping, waving, first words, all on time. Pointing I remember was at about a year old, but he couldn’t quite get his index finger out so I showed him once how and he got it then. He was still trying to gesture though. He had around 50 words at 18 months, unfortunately I stopped keeping track after that so can’t tell you how many at 24 months but don’t think it was a ton more. A few phrases on top of those words at 24 months.
-He’s very social, loves saying hi to everyone. He loves going places and seeing new things. Crowds or not. He does make eye contact though with me I don’t think it’s great, everyone else it’s good. Toddler thing? As an infant no eye contact issues ever.
-Regarding sensory stuff, I’ve seen no issues with loud noises, I’ve never seen him cover his ears. With this he loves baths but is not a fan of the shower. No sensory issues with brushing hair or teeth. No issues with clothes or tags other than he is getting opinionated on what he wears. Sometimes he will demand to wear pants.
-He does and has always answered to his name by looking up. We’ve never doubted that he knows he’s Warren. He will also ignore us at times, to where you have to yell to get his attention.
-He will demand to be cuddled usually at night. He likes to be in his chair to do that, he will give good hugs and randomly do it or give kisses, but not a ton for instance my hubby will always have to ask him for a hug before he goes to work. Even though Warren will say goodbye, wave to him, etc. He gets super excited when daddy or I come home.
-We are convinced he understands a lot more than he lets on. Can understand directions, but I’ll talk more about this later some concerns here too. For instance we did a hearing test (he’s had a lot of infections) and I’m not sure he understood the concept of only dropping a ball in the bucket when he heard a beep. He just dropped them in.
-I haven’t noticed any huge issues with transitions and schedule changes. I took him on a plane to Colorado at 26 months he was a tad fussy but was fascinated. He will more often than not have to be told more than once to do something but if I start counting he gets moving.
-Regarding speech he will try and tell us some stuff like if my husband takes him to the park he will come home and say “mom a doggie” or “a train!” If they heard a train for instance. So I kind of consider that story telling?
To add to that, here are more concerns:
-The SLP cleared him but my worry is that he still repeats a lot rather than answering. He can answer yes or no questions but for instance getting him out of a timeout he can’t explain why he was in there though I know he understands it. He has properly told me a couple times. But he still repeats a lot. So if I ask “him do we hit?” He will either say no (proper response) or repeat my question (echolalia??) That’s one example. If he’s asked “how are you?” He repeats it back. Also just now I told him by and have fun with daddy, he repeated it back. Still lots of spontaneous speech too.
-He has a ton of words but not always putting them into sentences correctly when I feel like he should be able to. For instance if he says me feeding the dogs he will whine “doggie, doggie” until I give him the bowls to feed them. He does have 2-3 word sentences I’ve even heard some that are 5. The other day he threw a piece of pickle for our dog Ellie to eat and said “Ellie get it, a pickle.” But then he will ask for things in one word too.
-I worry about not only echolalia but what I’m wondering is scripting? Never hear him recite from tv shows or anything but he will use a lot of the same phrases. Like even though he knows how to tell us he’s hungry and wants to eat, every morning he will come into our room and say “toast, nana (banana)” in the same tone. Like he’s reciting from ages ago when I was listing foods he could have for breakfast. He will tell someone that’s what he had for breakfast if asked even if it’s not.
-He toe walks 70-80% of the time. And at times I mean he’s literally ON his toes it looks painful. Runs on flat feet.
-He lines up his cars a lot, but it’s different every time and I can’t say he perseverates over it. Many times he will take a car out and give it to you, or if you knock them over he won’t freak out. Might laugh. There’s also been times he will get upset and demand it back too. It depends.
-I’ve noticed him spin in circles and fall down a few times this last week, it doesn’t last long (he said “I dance” while doing it a couple times), and when he’s excited he does what I am convinced is hand flapping. It last very briefly. He will also jump up and down a lot when excited like if I’m getting him food.
-He has imagery play but I feel like it’s limited. I’m a first time mom who has never really been around toddlers though so I don’t know. He imitates some play and I’ve seen him like make toast into a boat (”look a boat”)and pretend it’s moving but he doesn’t have the language yet so maybe that’s part of it? He will make a pretend dragon from LEGO’s stuff like that.
-He plays by himself a lot when it’s the 2 of us in the room. He engages too, like will bring me a car or books to read. But then does his own thing. He can get finicky during play too and likes to call the shots is this normal at his age? He gets crabby easily. He loves playing air hockey with us though.

    • @reuvenknight1575
      @reuvenknight1575 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

So a lot of this is pretty normal for his age. I think you may be expecting him to have capabilities it would be atypical for him to have yet, such as telling you why he is in trouble. Introspection and 3 year olds rarely mix. If he doesn't have it down by 6 that would be the time to worry, but don't be surprised if he suddenly loses it a puberty, that seems to be a normal teenage thing -_-
He sounds quite bright for his age. Give him some time to develop a little more. I'm not going to say he doesn't have autism because 1) I am not someone who can give that diagnosis, and 2) Aspergers is always a possibility. Even other disorders may be possible like Sensory Processing issues, communication disorders, the wide world of non-autistic nuerodiversity. Or he could be fine. What is concerning is that you say he is toe-walking almost all the time. If this has been going on for longer than a few weeks he should be evaluated for physical therapy. He may be suffering from tendon issues which can be easily fixed with intervention. It can be a sign of autism but it can be a sign of other issues too. The most important thing is to take care of it so it doesn't cause problems down the road.
Also, a thing that they don't tell you a lot is that hand-flapping doesn't always equal autism. It is a behavior in a few other disorders and sometimes means nothing at all, so don't worry about it too much. As I said, it doesn't mean he doesn't have it, but at this stage it would be hard to say. I know you might not like it but you are going to have to wait it out a little longer.
Anecdotally your story reminds me of my daughter who has ADHD hyperactive type, but I doubt your son has her level of, well, hyperactivity. She didn't toe-walk much though, but she had a speech delay issue that later turned out to be a hearing impairment that was fixable.

Autism isn’t a tragedy. I have two autistic sons, ages 13 and 28. Autistic people aren’t broken. The world that sees them broken is what is most disabling for them. Get him a diagnosis, fight for accommodations if he is autistic; stay away from Autism Speaks. Autistic Self Advocacy Network is the most informative source. They know when we see them as broken or a tragedy. Do your child a favor and love all he is.

My son turned 2 in April and he’s been in speech therapy since he was 19 months. He has about 30ish words and he’s beginning to put two words together (i.e., “blue car”, “all done”). He can also count from 1-20 and he knows the alphabet like the back of his hand. What’s happening now, however, is that he’s singing more than talking (ABCs, wheels on the bus, old macdonald, etc.). I’ve never really heard any other stories of kids doing this.

Same with my son. Hes a super smart boy and a fast learner. He recieves information well, just has a hard time expressing what he wants to say. He has been in ST for over a year and its slowly getting better. I have decided to just keep challenging him even though the speech is slow. We just started writing the alphabet and in 3 days hes writing letters on his own. some of his speech is clear, some babble hes 3. Potty training is going well but he still has moments where he just wont go to the BR or tell me he will use his pull up even though he knows to go.

I have 2 boys on the spectrum, both speech delayed. My 6 yr old was nonverbal until 2 1/2, then it came slowly, and from 3 1/2 to around 4 he head a language explosion. He still struggles with articulation (& has an Apraxia diagnosis), but has a huge vocabulary and taught himself to read at 4. Our youngest is 26 months, and says mama, da (for dad), no, & yeah, and signs milk. He doesn't respond to his name and doesn't even try to mimic or repeat new words, yet.

Thank you for sharing your story!! You're am amazing mother! And soo patient lol. My son is 22 months old and started regressing into autism after his 12 and 15 month shots.. the day after his 15 month shots after his fever broke we went into the kitchen for breakfast and usually he'd start saying nanna nanna bc hed see the bananas on our table and was obsessed lol but this day he couldn't say nanna anymore and had such a look of confusion then frustration on his little face he eventually said Nene instead of nana and that's what he called his grandma was nene. That day my son lost alll of his words but 3 essentially overnight... all his drs said it was "normal" but I knew it was. Most of these mainstream doctors are clueless as to what autism is and how to heal these kids who most of the time have developmental issues as well as some kind of gastrointestinal problems.. since we stopped vaccinating hes starting to get his words back and he hasn't been sick not once since then.. your boys are wonderful and soo cute!! I have to ask you this tho.. did you vaccinate them too?? I know it's a highly controversial topic but I witnessed it firsthand which led me down a rabbit hole of information.. I wish you and your boys the very best!! God bless yall!!

I had a similar experience, at 15 months they gave my son 6 different shots & said it was perfectly safe after I asked many times. Then in the coming weeks I noticed him regressing & losing words he had frequently said before. He's 25 months now & isn't barely speaking or even trying to communicate. He'll babble to himself & just cry or whine when he wants something. He doesn't listen to commands, won't sit still or pay attention when trying to read to him, won't pretend play and mostly just throws his toys around. I'm really scared he is autistic & don't know what to do 😢

I agree with you 100% those vids are negative af. Kids with Autism just learn different. I had a break down too until I actually spoke to an autistic person who was confused as to why I was so upset. 😂 he wasn’t diagnosed until he was 30, his mom said it wasn’t a thing to diagnose everyone with an issue back then. what I liked the most was she said she saw an obstacle she overcame it. For example, his speech was almost non existent and she bettered it by playing with him and constantly repeating the word. Learning while playing is the most effective because his mind is so relaxed that it just flows through him. She said she attacked all issues that arise with the same mindset. She also said those too are hurtles that I will soon help him overcome. My friend said his mom gave him the confidence to be himself and all he remembers is having fun with his mom. I hope my translation is accurate

I have a 15 yr old that is on the spectrum and a 10yr old that is NT. They both could and can talk to your ears bleed but speech and language are not the same. My NT daughter would lecture us at 14 months, maybe using 10 words but she didn't need words for you to understand. My oldest, never did this, she asked if she needed something she couldn't reach, she spoke but never spoke with us, didn't matter to her if anyone was listening. My youngest on the other hand would not only make sure we were listening but try and turn your head so she knew you were paying attention.
My daughter is the same person she was before her diagnosis. I didn't loose a thing,in fact I've gained so much because without a diagnosis without therapy I never would have heared her ask for me because she was nervous. Took 13 yrs before she was able to say that and it was the first time I felt like I knew my daughter.
To many parents are in Denial and I have to say, be very careful because denial will work at 2, 3 yrs old but I promise as they get older, it will become more and more obvious and when it does, ask yourself, can you live with yourself knowing that because you didn't want to see it, your child missed early intervention, the most crucial time, a time you never get back, a time that can minimize if not avoid certain delays from happening. I know I couldn't. There's nothing shameful or bad about having a child on the spectrum. Not only was I relieved but my daughter was also with her diagnosis because nothing has changed but her finally recieving the help she needs.

i have seen alot of young mothers (including my wife) augment things that may just work themselves out in time.
the motherly instinct comes in, then the "googling" as you put it. and we want the best for our children and want to help them. so we try to treat something that may not be a problem.
im not saying they dont have autism or a speech problem (cause the Lord knows i do have one)
but the excessive treatments can be strange to me. im not naive either i understand you need to catch things when theyre early.
i dont usually commit to one side or another. i think your a loving mother and want the best for her kids.
they look fine to me. i think growing up and not being told " you have this XYZ" is much healthier for the psychie.
imagine a world where growing up we are told we have this this and that...imagine what that does to a human when being told and reinforcing that on a daily basis does to them.

It is really good to address speech delays in autism because they can be a very common sign of it. I am seeing a lot of comments about parents wondering if their child has autism because of a delay. I wondered the same thing when my 2 year old was talking at the level of a 14 month old. We worked with speech therapy for months and there was a lot of progress, but not nearly as much as when we discovered she was half-deaf (thankfully for a resolvable reason). She lost a lot of time to autism assumptions and a bad audiologist (thank goodness I was watching and noticed her dismiss a glaring inconsistency and insisted on a retest with a better one) and her communication and self-esteem suffered greatly.
Please, please make sure to check with your doctor to make sure your child's hearing is okay too. Many times a child who has a hearing impairment, such as partial deafness, can fly under the radar. I have a friend in particular who had a significant delay because her brain had a processing issue where all the words came out backwards in her mind, and it took her a much longer time to speak at a normal level for her age group. I am in no way saying that a child with autism who is non-verbal must have a hearing impairment, I know at least one kid who we have watch fall into a non-verbal state, but it is a really good idea to make sure. Even if, at the end of the day, your child does have autism, it would be far worse to have a hearing impairment and autism than just autism.
