My daughter works at the Union Chapel, London and told me about them. She thought they were simply outstanding and that I would like them. She's not wrong. Just shows how much 'undiscovered' talent is out there. Wonderful.
please let me know when you see David Rawlings playing like this while harmonizing every syllable of the lyrical melody. Respect to influence is appropriate, but recognition of the next level that has been achieved is mandatory.
ShoreBrake he and Gillian do that on several tunes. Playing a ton of notes is not necessarily harder or better guitar playing. And stop demanding I recognize anything.
Just saw them live in Melbourne, Australia. They were an absolute delight. Perfect, silky harmonies, flawless, tasteful guitar, punctuated with a hilarious, dry wit. Loved it!
Go see them live and be amazed and "wow'd". No stage monitors, no amplified instruments, one microphone. Just pure talent, beautiful songs and harmony.
i am just like listening to chad and jeremy, peter and gordon, the everly brothers and most of all simon and garfunkle. the dou is an auditory marvelously beautiful. it is odd but i felt sad after. makes me ponder what life is.
Perfect harmony, great playing, understandable lyrics fantastic talent.......they will NEVER make it in todays cheap crap music industry.....but I like them!!!!
they're making it. and this whole bluegrass/folk thing is taking off. i've been waiting for this kind of musicianship and quality to come back around... i'm jumping in with both feet as a producer.
They are most certainly not undiscovered! Their song Snake Eyes has been used en several great movies, Hollywood as well as minor local movies and even some indie films.
Does Kenneth ever describe how he's come to play like this? I've played and taught for years, but I want so badly to unlock the instrument like he has. HOW?
Someone commented on the microphones...I was just looking at some today online. They're called Ear Trumpets and they're handmade mics using found parts for the housings. Pretty cool. Look up "ear trumpet labs" for more info. No affiliation.
I agree with so many other comments. I have seen so many acts that merely imitate others. Let's face it.....singing has been done. Harmonies?? I've heard harmonies before. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't those guitars they are playing?? And other than Boy George and the occasional Bowie incarnation, doesn't every other male act wear pants?? Who cares if they are tremendously talented and willing to pursue the gifts they have obviously been blessed with?? That too has been done before!! I hope my joking isn't taken seriously. I just found these guys and am shocked to see that some people just can't give cudo's to a great act. I will see them every chance i get!!
let's clarify something -- i can agree with comparisons of simon and garfunkel but people are making that correlation for the wrong reasons i think. it's the quality of their craft that shows similarities, not the sound.
David Rawlings doesn't Sing as well as Kenneth and Art can't play Guitar anywhere near as well as Joey, so I think we all need to give these boys the FULL Credit they deserve - and their body of Quality Work is Already Larger imho.......
I can see the Simon and Garfunkel similarities but I also notice a physical similarity to Lennon and McCartney. I don't know their names but the man on the left seems Lennon-ish and the other man is kinda baby faced like McCartney. Just saying.
OK, if this is an Andy Kaufman style long-form bit that we'll all be let in on several years from now, then the joke is on us and... bravo! If not, shouldn't they at least be sending a percentage of their earnings to Gillian Welch and ( most especially ) David Rawlings?

Beautiful recording!
A friend just walked into my office and pointed me HERE. I am blown away. To say these guys are good is like saying water is wet. Gosh a'mighty.
So glad you enjoyed this wonderful session!
Never gets old, just keeps getting better
My daughter works at the Union Chapel, London and told me about them. She thought they were simply outstanding and that I would like them. She's not wrong. Just shows how much 'undiscovered' talent is out there. Wonderful.
Takes my breath away.
please let me know when you see David Rawlings playing like this while harmonizing every syllable of the lyrical melody. Respect to influence is appropriate, but recognition of the next level that has been achieved is mandatory.
standing upon the giants shoulders singing and playing beautifully
It's truly astonishing and beautiful
yes - agree that it's incredible what Kenneth does, a born musician
ShoreBrake he and Gillian do that on several tunes. Playing a ton of notes is not necessarily harder or better guitar playing. And stop demanding I recognize anything.
So beautiful! Was just gonna say the cars and atmosphere added so much. Such a lovely, tender recording.
Honestly, this is the best live performance that I have seen since Bon Iver's 4AD Session. Absolutely breathtaking!
So glad you enjoyed this wonderful session!
Cant get enough of these guys...want them to come to NZ
Wednesday 19th August 2020. The Tunning Fork. Auckland NZ
Classic before they even get started.
I come back to this video every now and again. Might be my favorite recording of the 21st century. It really gets in there nice and deep like.
Me too
So glad you enjoyed this wonderful session!
@@ThePortlandSessions I still come back
Still coming back
Just saw them live in Melbourne, Australia.
Very very good, reminds a little of Simon and Garfunkel with a country and western twist, these guys will go far.
their voices melt together perfectly. good music still being made. cheers!
i am just like listening to chad and jeremy, peter and gordon, the everly brothers and most of all simon and garfunkle. the dou is an auditory marvelously beautiful. it is odd but i felt sad after. makes me ponder what life is.
the power of two guitars and a harmony.
Thank you for making real folk music.
Kenneth Pattengale is my idol. I want to be as good as him someday.
Go for it, he's a monster player.
It's 8 years since your comment ... how are you coming along ?
I want to know as well.
These guys are insanely talented. Llewyn Davis special on Showtime is the first time I heard them.
Same here, I was confessed when I saw Marcus Mumford crying
Amazing musicians, a true gold mine here!
That second song is a masterpiece
Agreed!
Perfect harmony, great playing, understandable lyrics fantastic talent.......they will NEVER make it in todays cheap crap music industry.....but I like them!!!!

they are BIG right now, & only getting BIGGER!
john axelson Agree, and very cool your doin that
These guys are good enough to change the industry
I am so in love with them
Saw them for the first time last night on PBS. Amazing!
They are most certainly not undiscovered! Their song Snake Eyes has been used en several great movies, Hollywood as well as minor local movies and even some indie films.
Two beautiful voices in one 😊❤️☀️
They are playing an awesome small venue, small theater-type tour. Can't wait until they hit Wisconsin in May.
The guys are my "new heroes" . . . wow! Love their sound!!
Wow. Just wow !
Are these guy amazing or what? Good on you.
Anyone hear Simon and Garfunkel in the first song? Really enjoying their videos!
Reminds me of 60s Peter and Gordon harmonies
Great singing and playing
Amazing Harmonies....Bravo !!!
There are a just "few" bands and musicians out there who could do much worse than listening and learning from these two...refreshing!
MUSICAL = BRILLIANCE
True artists.
Man that space is perfect for these two. Sounds amazing.
So glad you enjoyed this wonderful session!
I dig this, the playing, the harmonies, the setting. Good stuff.
this is like heaven
Breath taking!
oh my this is amazing
So glad you enjoyed this wonderful session!
I LUF IT / YOU GUYS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so beautiful!
Wonderful!
love at first listen
Does Kenneth ever describe how he's come to play like this? I've played and taught for years, but I want so badly to unlock the instrument like he has.
HOW?
This is most definitely folk music.
Brilliant, remind me a little of Kings of Convenience (Homesick)...
Perfect session.
So glad you enjoyed this wonderful session!
Brilliant.
Agreed!
Someone commented on the microphones...I was just looking at some today online. They're called Ear Trumpets and they're handmade mics using found parts for the housings. Pretty cool. Look up "ear trumpet labs" for more info. No affiliation.
Yeah, we love using ETL mics for our sessions.
Brilliant guitar work.
They are amazing!
Great stuff. They're so locked in to. That doesn't happen over night- or maybe they just lock in naturally?
You can go on their website too look.
Would you categorize this as country music?
Regardless its great!
AGREED! why do people have to try and pigeonhole and characterize, classify? Appreciate them for what they are....MAGNIFICENT.
it's what people do as we listen and attempt to understand what we're hearing. But I agree, it makes a boring read.😑
I don't think most people can appreciate just how impossibly difficult it would be to play Kenneth's part while singing.
Yep
I want to buy this as an album.
I believe their website gives it away for free.
So glad you enjoyed this wonderful session!
Have you tried tying a white handkerchief to the neck?
i want these microphones !
Please - Could someone please tell me the names of the songs on this video? Thank you so much.
Sebastian Martinez Just got this. Thanks!

You should hear what Kenneth says about David Rawlings. It's not a competition!
They should do something with First Aid Kit, then I could die a happy man.
let's clarify something -- i can agree with comparisons of simon and garfunkel but people are making that correlation for the wrong reasons i think. it's the quality of their craft that shows similarities, not the sound.
If I close my eyes I would have thought it's Simon and Garfunkel back in business.
100 times better
some of the harmonies sound similar, yet they are far different with the instrumental skill and arrangements, and type of music they write and sing.
David Rawlings doesn't Sing as well as Kenneth and Art can't play Guitar anywhere near as well as Joey, so I think we all need to give these boys the FULL Credit they deserve - and their body of Quality Work is Already Larger imho.......

I hear Simon and Garfunkel in their voices, not as much in their guitars.
There can be no better way to spend 12minutes and 9 seconds
So glad you enjoyed this wonderful session!
OK, if this is an Andy Kaufman style long-form bit that we'll all be let in on several years from now, then the joke is on us and... bravo! If not, shouldn't they at least be sending a percentage of their earnings to Gillian Welch and ( most especially ) David Rawlings?
Are you off your meds again?
No. :)
Ummmmmm. WOwzers!
...with your clothes on.
They look like Lennon and McCartney, sound like Simon and Garfunkel and play like Django Reinhardt. But no, it's not for me.
