  • On our last Holland America Norway cruise, we stopped by the lovely town of Lerwick in the Shetland Islands. We set out on our own to explore this gem. We checked out the wonderful Shetland Soap Company, who work for a good cause. We walked to The Lodberrie, Scotland’s most photographed house, along the lovely Commercial Street. Next, we explored the Shetland Museum and Archives to learn about local history. Finally, we had a wonderful lunch at Fjara Café Bar before coming back to the tender dock. Here’s our experience!

The Port Lowdown offers detailed and fun video guides for cruise ports and destinations, helping independent, budget-minded travelers save time and money. We found that many videos lack the details we needed, such as parking, restrooms, available services, and even sidewalk quality. We act as your “port scout”, providing first-hand reports on essential information that others overlook; our videos cover port terminals, independent excursions, goods, services, transportation and even ship tours. With time ticking away during your port visit, we understand the importance of sound planning to make every moment count. Let us give you the Lowdown!

Looks lovely for mature travelers. I’m Traveling there with a bunch of kids ages 7-15. I’m afraid that they will hate it. Any suggestions?

The Shetland Museum has a kid's section, plus some of the exhibits are pretty cool.
One thing I wish I had gone to was the Up Helly Aa Exhibition, which feature a Viking boat and costumes used for the festival.

If you have the budget, a tour to the Shetland ponies might be in order.
Plus there's lot of uphill alleyways to challenge themselves on. And there are some pretty cool bookstores too:

I hope this helps. It IS an small, old town with few parks or kid's attractions.

Let’s hope the cruise people don’t take over like they did Orkney. I won’t be going to Orkney again.

Yes it is North East of Scotland. We may be forcefully ruled by Scotland but we're NOT part of Scotland and that's official.
