  • Today we do a review and tasting of 7 Devils Rye Whiskey and compare it to Bulleit Rye.
    Check out the Instagram account @whiskey_marketing_school
    ** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
    Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
    austinwhiskyvau...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
    Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
    See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
    Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
    Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
    ** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
    Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
    Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
    It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
    ** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
    Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
    The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
    ** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
    There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
    Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
    There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
    Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

    If anyone skis on the East Coast, go to Sugarbush Vermont during peak season and outside the bar you'll have local distillers that offer tastings and sells their stuff.
    I just did a side by side of Bulleit Rye @45% and Mad River Revolution Rye @ 48% and wow is Bulleit tame and one noted. It'll burn you if you don't breathe right when drinking it, but it has so much more going on than the Bulleit. Check it out if you're in Warren Massachusetts.

    Bought a bottle of bulliet rye and boy it was awesome! For some reason I can drink bourbon straight but find scotch a lot harder to drink. I don't know why that is.

    For a long time, i never tasted rye in rye whiskey. It was always vreamy and buttery. So, your review sounds super accurate to me.

    If you can manage it, recording episodes at distilleries in Scotland would be awesome! Possible with special editions or limited releases? With distillery staff?
    If you're worried about the broadband situation, just record extra episodes before you leave to have in the can, and then upload the ones from Scotland when you get back.

    Basically I was just wondering if any scotch distilleries made a Bourbon according to US regulations. It'd be something I'd like to try. We've talked before about grain whiskey and the fact I have zero experience with it. If you could do a few episodes on them that would be amazing. If you have any that are mostly corn that would be even better! Maybe even compare it to a Bourbon?

    Today I had (the original) Four Roses, Jack Daniels, Monkey Shoulder and Bulleit Rye in that order. I thought I only liked bourbon because I didn't like Monkey Shoulder as much as I expected, and as the only one out of all my friends. But then I tried Bulleit Rye and that was so nice all of a sudden. Really weird and learning more & more!

    For all its many flaws, I just realized the state store system where I live just put FIVE (ahem) expressions (ahem) of Compass Box on Clearance for what appears to be ridiculous prices: Peat Monster and Spice Tree for $38, Asyla for $29, Orangerie and Oak Cross for $30. Previously I had never been much of a Scotch drinker, but after some experimentation (partially based on your recommendations) I think I am ready to give these a try. Unfortunately, not all of them are available in my city, but I think one or two bottles couple be a wise investment. If you were to get JUST ONE of these five listed, which would it be?

      @jonstothfang3800 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I made a Collector-Wise but Fiscally-Questionable decision and bought one of each of the three that are available in my area: Oak Cross, Orangerie, and Peat Monster. Unfortunately the Spice Tree and Asyla aren't around anywhere near me, just elsewhere in the state (Pennsylvania, if anyone else wants to look for them: finewineandgoodspirits.com). The clerk who got them from the back for me seemed completely taken by surprise at the prices, but also said the Clearance status probably means once they're gone, they won't be getting them back. But I GOT MINE

    When you talk about different notes in whiskey or bourbon, for example chocolate, does it mean chocolate was used in some part of the process? Or is it more of a combination of ingredients that give the illusion of it being there. Also, just how crazy do distilleries get in the ingredients they use?

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most distilleries stay simple with ingredients. Legally you can't add random herbals or other contents into the whisky distillation process. Although companies like Prichard's did have cocoa beans in the aging process for one of their Bourbons.
      When we refer to "notes of this" it's a combination of the chemicals in a whisky resulting in something that reminds your brain of another flavor. It's the actual presence of that flavor in the whisky

      Try the french Brenne whiskey. The top half may taste like candy corn and old apples; after out-gassing the second half ought to have cocoa. Decanting might accelerate the transition.

    I'm surprised you didn't mention that it's impossible for a "bourbon" to be made outside of the USA. One of the many requirements of what makes a bourbon is that it must be distilled in the USA, so it wouldn't be possible to make a bourbon in Scotland. Right? or am I wrong on remembering the requirements of bourbon ?

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right, but I was going with the spirit of the question. My interpretation was that they were wondering if someone was making something that met all the qualifications of bourbon without being made in the US.

    • @MichaelWellman1955

    hello, Guys found you last week via modern rogues been binge watching you since. I'm Scottish ( Glasgow) but i am a bourbon drinker ( wife is from Kentucky ) if you were to give me 2 must try bourbon what would they be for some one who sticks mostly to buffalo trace and some times JD it was my gateway.
    also if you are ever in Scotland would love a meetup or tasting of some kind id suggest the good spirit company in Glasgow as a stop off.
    the internet here is spotty out in the country if you are in a major city you should be fine for uploading

      Welcome, and glad to have you! With bourbons, there are a lot of really cool options, but it's hard to know what you can get your hands on. Maybe pick a few you've seen and we can give you recommendations and references.

      Whiskey Vault I can pick up most jack and Jim ( not a fan) as well as the likes of bullit , buffalo trace, makers , wild turkey , knob at the supermarket but I also
      Can find a lot more online via master of malt

      Yeah I echo the thoughts of Paul R on the broadband. It is getting better in rural areas but its not quite there yet. Should still be able to upload videos though, after all Bruichladdich etc upload their live streams no problem on Islay. If you are in any major town or city, you'll be fine too.
      Bring an umbrella though, you will need it even at the height of summer! ;)

      Of the ones you listed, I'd recommend Maker's Mark, or Maker's 46, whichever you have access to. And keep an eye out for Larceny, it's my go to bourbon.

    I love the "Technically Bourbon" idea! Except that would call for a ton of new oak buckets.

    • @WhiskeyVault

      Yeah, that's true. Unless it was one huge "bucket"

      Or it could be a barrel with in intake pipe and an outtake pipe with the flow calibrated to take exactly 90 seconds to pass through to the bottling stage.

      Just use a charred-oak bucket as the collection vessel on the still. Instant bourbon machine.

    First of all good luck with the "whisk(e)y man's" stones....on a more channel related comment. Why is it that there seems to be lack of Irish whiskey tastings? If you have it I highly recommend Red Breast 16. I saw that you had the 12 in the modern rouge episode. On any account I will continue to ignore my children for 13 minutes each night to enjoy a whiskey with Daniel and Rex. Cheers.

    Why malted barley? Why not malted corn or rye?

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can malt all grains, but the answer to this comes down to an incredibly complex chemistry lesson. But very often corn and rye are malted as well.

    What do you guys think of Basil Hayden's rye? I've been drinking Michter's, Bulleit and Dickel rye for a few years now and just discovered Hayden's rye and it's my new favorite (well aside from the Michter's barrel strength rye). I have to admit I'm quite a rye fan and have tried a lot of them. Love the spicy notes. However, you guys have recently turned me onto the world of scotch, so thanks for that!
