I graduated with my bachelors in animal science! Wanted to be a zoo vet (extremely competitive, low pay, 12 years college, extreme debt) and right now I'm coasting as a pet sitter after working as a farm hand during college. The animal industry is kinda screwed up, where organizations think it's okay for people to volunteer/ intern and never have to pay them. The entire veterinary field is depressed because of the working conditions and pay grade not being sustainable (unless you own the practice). I want to open a veterinary consulting agency now to change the animal industry so no more volunteering/ interning is required in order to have "experience" and hopefully create better environments!

hi! I’m working towards a bachelors in animal science, and I know going to school to be a veterinarian is too much for me. Animal science is part of the agriculture sector, so you learn a lot of skills regarding agriculture incase you are into it, like food technology(especially dairy, eggs and meat), pest management, crop cultivation techniques (mostly for growing feed), biotechnology etc etc. This wasnt mentioned in the video.
With such degree, you can work in big farms and companies that make feed and feed additives, in which case the salary is relatively good.
If you decide to start your own farm, you will be very knowledgable and avoid a lot of uneccesary costs. Usually farmers are in a bad economic state for 3 reasons: 1:depending on the country, the state may not subsidise the farmers enough. 2)food frauds 3)they dont know a lot of scientific stuff, which leads them to false decisions regarding herd management, hygiene, nutrition, physiology which again leads them to a lot of uneccesary costs.
Most common problems? students find it difficult or disqusting to work with production animals (which has the good money) and decide to work with pets and zoo animals. Also, most graduates arent knowleadge at all regarding important aspects of animal production.

Having a bachelor's in Animal Science works for me because the end goal was always to get a masters degree. The increase in pay and opportunities to help animals and people alike with a masters is way higher. If I had stopped at just a bachelor's, it wouldn't have been worth it.

Very good explanation Shane. Animal science majors don't have the luxury of being able to breeze there way through college and land into a solid job like other majors. A successful career requires planning from day one. As you said in the video, a lot of careers in animal science require advanced education and the bachelor level jobs aren't very prevalent.
My advice from someone who has an agriculture degree:
Get friendly with your advisor. Have at least two good internships if not more. Think ahead EARLY if the job you want requires a master's degree. If it does, start looking for a graduate assistantship EARLY. Or find an affordable program online that you can work off in a few years. Don't stumble out of the gate looking for a job that requires advanced learning if you don't have it. Plan ahead!
If you don't want to go to grad school, I would heavily recommend a double major. Pair it up with food science, crop science, precision agriculture, or anything marketable. If you don't land out in an animal science job out of the gate, use the experience from something similar to help benefit yourself the next time around.

I have a Bachelor's in Animal Science and I would say it's definitely not worth it unless you know exactly what you're going to do, like grad school or veterinarian. If you have any doubt, I would pick a different major because the jobs immediately available to you are too low for someone who worked to get a degree. If you want to help animals, you're better off spending two years becoming a vet technician. You'll spend less time on your degree and have slightly better paying jobs available to you.
I can speak on the research side of things as someone who has worked in research departments and animal facilities at universities. Jobs available to you after graduation with a Bachelor's in Animal science are technician jobs which typically pay $15-18/hr. Maybe if you have a lot of experience and/or can bs your way through an interview you can start out at $20-25/hr. If you can't manage that, you can move your way up after you land a basic tech job. (By the way, these entry level tech jobs are not glamorous at all. They're mostly cleaning, scooping poop, or routine bench work in a lab.) Anyway after a while, you will be eligible for position's that pay more like $30-35/hr. The highest paying jobs would be things like operations managers or directors. Those can pay around 100k.
I assume that most people that pick animal science want to help animals. One of the better jobs you can get is a vet tech at a university. You would work with a lot of species, but one of the most common are mice. Even without a license as a vet tech, you can get this job, as long as you have relevant experience working with research animals.
When applying for any job, keep in mind they will try to low ball and take advantage of you. For example, I've known vet techs that get paid around 30k, while another makes around 50k, even though they do the same job and have about the same amount of experience. Basically, know your worth and always try to negotiate a higher salary. I've even seen "Research Coordinator" jobs paying $15/hr. There's no way in hell a Research Coordinator should be paid that low. They really prey on naive people in this industry that just want to work with animals.
Another tip, ALWAYS ask about the working culture, work load, and how many people are working there. You need to look out for smaller labs/departments that only have a few people because sometimes they will expect you to do a lot of extra work and take on roles that aren't your job, but not pay you appropriately for the work that you're doing.

I feel like a lot of these points were very well made, however, there is a lack of information on the research side of animal science. Biomedical research using animal models (which typically it is hard to find information on as most people don't consider it an option).

You'll need all of the scholarships you can get. Basically on average you pay like you're going to be a human doctor but get paid less in the end. Avg median pay is 90k. It is also very difficult to get in. How bad do you want it and why do you want to do it? Will you be willing to work long hours? I'm currently taking a break from school and working in research to see if I want to continue. Loans and a health issue is the main reason why I'm questioning.
He didn't do one that was in depth like this but he gave it a D in a Tier list:

      @SavvvyNinja 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Becoming a veterinarian is really up to the individual. You have to accept a large debt load that is not equal to starting pay. A lot of young people do not set up a financial plan to handle this debt and end up in ridiculous amounts of debt with no way to pay it back. Especially having to do a residency after schooling and maybe only making between $70,000 to $90,000 a year for $300,000 debt. It would really be up to you if you want to manage that debt load for your passion and accept the fact it will take you a while to pay off and it will affect huge life choices as you grow older. I am in the same boat as you considering vet school, but the debt load to me is not worth it. My financial stability is as important to me as enjoying my job career. I would weigh all of the possibilities and see which benefits you best. If you are thinking about the finances, you may be doing more then some.

It would make sense that if you pursue Animal science for your bachelor, instead of taking Masters of Agriculture or Animal science, it would be logically better for your path to take Business school afterwards for your next step. For the reason you stated above, Farm Business is...Business. So when you wanna took holds on your Business and become a better businessman exploring other ventures while at the same time expanding your Business, Taking a degree on Business might actually helps. But reality sometimes took you on a different path, you can't really take Business School while at the same time making a living by being a busy entrepreneur. You still have something to love like working with animals...But the slap in reality was that You gonna run a Business enterprise.
I'm an Animal Science Grad, Currently in my country the Graduates were not that Saturated and i still got a Decent above average salary working on a poultry farm as a manager than my other friends who undergo different career path and now my Tax Rate shows that i'm on Mid-Upper class in my town...which idk if that's a good idea since more tax income which were biggest bollocks. I can only dream of getting $64.000 annual salary here lol, if i'm getting that ammount of salary in my city, everyone would've pursued that career path. Even General practicioner doctors don't get that annual income mid term.
But still, I'm not in the US so...yeah, I'm just making a perspective on my career path outside US.
Edit : No degree for me worth $40.000 i'd rather not taking any college lol, Since education in my country were not that expensive this degree actually comes at the lower left end heheh.
