  • In this episode I build a pair of matching planters and explain the placement of plants based on their sizes and colors. (This method also
works perfectly for cut flower arrangements.) It is helpful to keep the tags from all the plants you use, and to keep them handy I like to bundle them and then slip them into the planter between the pot and the soil- that way I know where to find them at the end of the summer. I can then keep the tags for the plants I want to grow next year in my garden notes. Please note-normally I would build the planters with the tallest plants furthest away from me and the shortest closest to me to make access a bit easier- I did it backwards in this clip so you can better see what I'm up to.
I hope this inspires you to make some fun planters for yourself! Let me know in the comments what you find the most fun and the most challenging in making planters- maybe I can help by answering your questions.
    Happy Planting!

      Hello 'Edna'!
Yes, as long as they are getting enough water you can really pack them in there! Especially with annuals, they will only grow so much in one season (which is their whole life span). With perennials i would give them more space to get bigger. Another important factor in creating impressive annual plantings is to make sure there is enough fertilizer for the plants to flourish. In planters and hanging baskets I suggest a combination of a slow-release hanging basket fertilizer, and by-weekly feedings with 20-20-20 mixed with water at half strength.
