Fertilizers explained
#whatkindoffertilizer #fertilizingmyplants #bestplantfood
Hello Garden Friends!
In this segment we will explore fertilizers, and hopefully help make some sense out of all the different fertilizing products on the market. Those three numbers on the fertilizer packaging represent Nitrogen (for green growth), Phosphorous (encourages flowers and roots, so great for fruit producing plants as well as flowers) and Potassium (strengthens stems, and aids overall vigor). Then there is micro nutrients, which are also important.
A hot topic for many gardeners, is the question of what route to go- go organic or with conventional fertilizers. Organic fertilizers nurture the soil and all the mycelium and tiny critters that live in the soil. Chemical fertilizers feed the plants directly, sometimes to the long term detriment of the soil. With chemical fertilizers you get bigger and stronger plants, but with organic/ natural fertilizers and soil culture your produce will taste better. I encourage you to learn more about the pros and cons so you can make informed decisions. Personally I like to use chemical fertilizers on annual hanging baskets etc., and for my veggie garden I use compost and a bit of fish fertilizer.
Until next time- Happy Gardening!

มุมมอง 192 หลายเดือนก่อน
#watermyplants #whydidmyplantdie? #howmuchwatershouldigivemyplants? In this episode I dive deeper into the mysteries of watering. Watering explained- part 1
มุมมอง 223 หลายเดือนก่อน
#wateringyourgarden #waterplants #whydomyplantsdie Most disappointing plant growing experiences stem from improper watering practices. How do you know how much water is enough, and how often should you water your garden and your house plants? In todays episode, I am explaining a few things in hopes that it will help you have better success growing lush gardens- both inside and out!
Ladybugs for pest control
มุมมอง 243 หลายเดือนก่อน
#Ladybugs #naturalinsectcontrol #aphidcontrolinthegarden Today I will talk a bit about how to use Ladybugs for controlling aphids and other garden pests in the garden, and you will also get to watch me release 250 adorable (but starving) aphid-gobbling little machines! Ladybugs have a lifecycle that involves four stages- they start out as eggs that hatch out to become a larvae, then they transf...
eco friendly low table arrangement
มุมมอง 1383 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this episode I will show you how to make a simple armature from branches that will allow you to create a low arrangement with a minimal amount of botanical material. This is practical when you only have a few blooms from your garden, or you don't want to spend a lot of money on store bought flowers. With this technique, you will now be able to create large but low arrangements without the us...
How to change the blades on your pruners
มุมมอง 244 หลายเดือนก่อน
On some pruners you can replace the blades when they become so worn that just sharpening doesn't cut it anymore. Felco is one such brand, and they are of very good quality. In addition to being great quality, and the fact that you can get replacement springs and blades for them, they also come in a number of different sizes to fit various sized hands. But that's not all! This particular pruner ...
mason bees and pollination
มุมมอง 335 หลายเดือนก่อน
The lack of pollinators is a worrisome problem that can spell disaster for humanity if things where to go wrong. Bees are directly and also indirectly involved in the production of about 90% of everything we eat, so it's not difficult to imagine what would happen if there suddenly where no more bees. Honey bees are not native to North America, they where brought by European settlers with a swee...
Pet and plant safety- introducing Spook, my sidekitty

Colours and Height Annuals
มุมมอง 1.4K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
in this video we build a large bowl type planter, using a variety of annual plants. (Annuals are the kind of plants that complete their whole life cycle in one summer and then die.) In order to get the biggest and brightest flowers from your annual baskets and planters, I suggest using a slow release fertilizer for hanging baskets and planters. It probably will be a 14-14-14 or so. (There are m...
Matching Annual Planters

In this episode I build a pair of matching planters and explain the placement of plants based on their sizes and colors. (This method also works perfectly for cut flower arrangements.) It is helpful to keep the tags from all the plants you use, and to keep them handy I like to bundle them and then slip them into the planter between the pot and the soil- that way I know where to find them at the...
Handy Herb Planter

Color coordinating the garden

Hi Karin- I try to remember to apply hand lotion before I get my hands all dirty, it helps when I clean my hands after. Also, you know those abrasive shower gloves you can buy at the drug store? They are marvelous at getting the dirt out from all the little crevices and around your cuticles. Good luck!

I'm not so brave as you :D I made up some planters with lysmachia and begonias and coleus too but I tried to keep the colour palette a little muted and only used pinks! I can't help it when I see begonias I have to buy them so I have them in every colour, including vibrant orange but I put those with some blue lobelia and bacopa for contrast. Beautiful planter, look forward to seeing more.

I think the beauty with making your own planters is that you can compose them however you like them- monochromatic or very colourful- and if you don't like it, you can always rearrange and change them until you like it. I find I get a lot !of inspiration from Pinterest and Instagram- there are so many talented people out there! Good luck trying new things!

    • @KristinaLinder-zp3kh
      @KristinaLinder-zp3kh 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hello 'Edna'! Yes, as long as they are getting enough water you can really pack them in there! Especially with annuals, they will only grow so much in one season (which is their whole life span). With perennials i would give them more space to get bigger. Another important factor in creating impressive annual plantings is to make sure there is enough fertilizer for the plants to flourish. In planters and hanging baskets I suggest a combination of a slow-release hanging basket fertilizer, and by-weekly feedings with 20-20-20 mixed with water at half strength.

Squirrels are kind of cute but they can sure be a nuisance in the garden, feasting on your bird food and expensive tulip bulbs. You may choose to invest in a squirrel proof birdfeeder, there are a few styles on the market to choose from, or you can try hanging your bird feeder where a squirrel can't reach it, like stretching a high test fishing line between two high points, and hanging your birdfeeder somewhere in the middle. They are good little gymnasts, but they might find it difficult to balance on a fishing line. I've also heard they don't like the smell of bloodmeal, which also works as a fertilizer in your garden and can be bought at garden centers. Good luck!
