You have helped me to set up my R9M/R9mm, very good videos...I have subbed this channel. I currently have R9m/R9mm and Gps working fine. I have BF GPS RTH on a switch and that too is working. I want to set BF GPS RTH as my failsafe but I have a question: My normal prefight checks are to power the quad (motors running) and turn the radio off to check that my failsafe is working. If i set the failsafe for GPS RTH in the CLI how could i do a preflight failsafe check?
If the quad loses sats while you are flying, and the sats are dropping below your min sats, the GPS rescue mode won't work and in case of a failsafe, your quad would disarm. But I don't know what happens when your quad loses sats when you are already in the rescue mode. Maybe it also disarms, but I can't imagine that it would lose Sats on the return to home flight with a higher altitude on a straight line.
my sats sometimes go down to 7 when I fly steep curves and rolls. I lowered the min sats to 5 so I can be sure it won’t effect the rth... HOPEFULLY But you are right that it probably won’t happen when it goes in a straight line.
What kind of calibration? You just need to wait for enough satellites. At the first flight at a cold start of the module it actually takes a few minutes. But on every next flight when you are out flying, the module immediately finds the satellites.
Excellent explanation. I have done dis to end it wont work it felt out the sky. My rssi goos not to zero it stays at the latest input. I run the r9 module on a external battery.

I do not know what I'm doing wrong, if someone can help me I would be very grateful
Hi, did you follow my steps? You also have to be more then 100 meters away for testing the rescue mode, if you are too close to your home position your quad will drop and won't go into the rescue mode. So you better try it at 400 meters.
Yes, I have used all your steps, the rescue mode works if I use a switch, the quad returns to me perfect , the problem is when try to make a failsafe , when stopped my taranis the quad disarmed immediately , I have tried all of things, sanity check on, off, fs,,,, make a failsafe turn off my tranis, make a failsafe with a switch in the table modes. Failsafe switch step 1 , step 2, all the things, even in more than 200 meters... I don’t know what can do more, Thanks a lot for you help,
Now I have using butterflight 3.6.6, because I have a problem in betaflight with kakute fc and kakute 4 in 1 esc, it make me flip after roll, and now I was using butterflight , but yesterday I Tried to test the failsafe in betaflight 3.5.? , and have the same problem, when make a failsafe , the quad it disarmed..
I have little solved the problem, not totally , but better than a crash, I have put 200 points on “guard time for stage 2 for activation after signal lost”, in the failsafe tab, and it have 20 seconds of flight to return at home, is a little time for recupere the signal , it comes and I can rescue the quad, I have tested all the possible things, and not found any else. Regards from mallorca, and thanks for your help
Hello Torban, quick question brother. If I turn the ACCELEROMETER OFF, will it affect the normal operation of the GPS? I asked this because I turn the accelerometer off and when I flicked the switch to rescue mode, my drone became unstable in the air, so I just took over the control but it scares me 😱
AHHHH wtf, don't turn off the accelerometer! If it is turned off, the rescue mode won't work and the home arrow also won't point to the home direction. You also need the accelerometer for auto leveling when your quad is in the rescue mode.
Torban Dallas, that’s what I thought 💭😁, but I turned it back on already. The reason why I turned it off it’s because, it might help with the Vibration. Anyways thanks for letting me know about my mistake 😂
Well, it even shows the flight altitude, speed, home direction and so on. In Betaflight you can't program a flight to checkpoints. For this you better check INav instead of Betaflight.
great video. i have a question: If you have your RTH height set at say, 100m, and you are flying above that and failsafe, will it go DOWN to 100m, or will it stay at its current height for the return trip? I ask this because I climb mountains, and if I'm 1000m up in the air on the mountain and my RTH height is set to 200m, will the quad try to descend and hit the ground because the height of the mountain is higher than 200m? Or will it hold it's height?
Did you see my entire video? At the end you can see, that it also climbs higher as i have been on this flight. Even when it loses the signal when the rth was enabled it climbed every time. So if you set your height to 100 meters, it goes over 100meters of your start point or your highest point that you have reached in a flight. In your example, you are starting from 0 meters and you are flying over a 2000m high mountain, than you are maybe decreasing to 1000meters and you than you failsafe at a height of 1000 meters your quad will climb to 2000+ meters - the highest point you have reached in this flight. Hope i could make it clear :)
@@TorbanDallas Oh, I didn't realize that it kept track og highest altitude during the flight and used that for RTH, that's fantastic. Is that default behavior, or do you have to set this s somewhere? Thanks for the really informative video!
Thanks! This is a new BN-180 that i have installed on my other quad, i also have installed a copper shielding foil under the Module to protect it against electromagnetic inteferences. So maybe the shielding foil was improving the performence of the gps module, or the module is just better than the other bn-180 on my other quad. I will add the foil under the other gps module too.
Actually, the foil provides a ground plane for the GPS receiver, that's why it works better for you. The GPS should be up on a stalk for best results, not near one of your motors.
Have you tested Betaflight - GPS Rescue Mode on BF 4.05 or 4.1 ??? If so, how? Have you used inch GPS? e.g. Beitian BN-880 Flight Control GPS Module Dual Module Compass or Matek Systems M8Q-5883 SAM-M8Q GPS & QMC5883L Compass Module ??? Is Beitian BN-180 enough for Rescue Mode ??? I admit that I lost the drone from Beitian BN-220, but maybe it's my fault I set something wrong in BF 4.05. (sorry for my English I use google translate).
I'm also struggeling with BF 4.1.x there's something changed in the Code. All in all it should work very similar as shown in my video. You can see my hassle with the latest version of Betaflight and the gps in my latest video. I won't test the rescue mode on BF 4.1.x until the gps code isn't fixed.
Vidéo is really cool, after setup the bn180 with u-center, gps on battery strap antenna facing up, I can't get more than 9 or 10. Do u think or know if gps like bn-880 is better with compass or maybe just the bn-220 ? Still follow you, good job. Thx
Thanks! I didn't test another GPS module yet. I have installed all of my GPS modules on the arm and covered the underside with copper shielding foil. Interestingly, one of my bn180 get's around 17 sats, the other one only around 12.
Why last test haha ?! , will the Hakrc f4 mini with barometer be a good candidate for a 3 inch micro gps build ? , do you know what gps module will work correctly or the hakrc f4 mini ? This will potentially be my first brushless quadcopter build , I’ve only built and flown brushed micro quads thanks and love the video that was far ! I have flysky i6s transmitter and will be using x6b Rx
Thanks for your comment, i think the gps module will nearly work with every FC with a free Uart Port. I recommend the GPS BN-180 Module that i have linked in my video description. It works fine as you can see and it's very small. But do you think you really need a gps module for a 3 inch quad? For a 3 inch short range copter it's nice to have, but not nesessary in my opinion.
Torban Dallas well the 3 inch helifar fuuton mini gets 14 min flight times so I want to build something similar , it’s my first build I’m on a budget basically so a 3 inch is ideal for me cause I have batteries I can use from my brushed quads I own now . Thanks
Thanks for this, really helped me setup my gps return to home function. Question: You set your Channel Fallback on Aux 3 to 1500. What does the 1500 represent? You also set your Aux 4 to 1000? What is the reasoning behind this?
Didn't you listen? at 1:32 I'm explaining why I did set Aux 3 to 1500. In case of a failsafe it sets my quad into the angle mode bevor the rescue Mode kicks in to make sure my quad is leveled horizontally. Aux 4 or Aux 12 (depending on which Rssi value i'm using) represents my Rssi and I don't want it to hold its last position when a failsafe occurs, I want it to show me a 0 in my Osd, that's why I set it to 1000 in case of a failsafe - I'm also explaining it in one of my other videos.
@@TorbanDallas Thanks, yes I did listen but I am still unsure of what the 1500 represents? Throttle value? millisecond delay? What is the difference between hold and the 1500 value?
@@BrettSantillan It represents the stick value regarding to the transmitter page in betaflight. Hold means that it holds its last position in case of a Failsafe. For example: if you are on full throttle and a failsafe occurs so it will keep flying away with the Hold setting on throttle. Set is to set it to the value you want it to be in case of a failsafe.
Are you struggling finding satellites with yours? I have the same gps, but I'm struggling finding gps, even if I had a red blinking light earlier. I'm wondering if it is because of the cold in Norway..?
Taproot well i'm getting between 10 and 15 satellites after around 5 minutes. Make sure to use the galileo satellites too - it's a cli command. Also don't cover your GPS antenna.
@@FPV-Jon You can also add some shielding tape under your gps module. I have added a layer of copper shielding tape to avoid electromagnetic interference from my motor wires and escs.
Rxsr? I have installed a XM+, but I know that the rxsr loses the signal pretty quick. On every rx there's a different rssi value where it loses the signal
@@TorbanDallas Hmm i think they fixed it, at least on my RX theres firmware with fixed RSSI values. (r9mm) Ive flown it down to 30% without failsaves (ch16 rssi). Doesnt the xm+ have fixed firmware yet? I know this video is somewhat old now and the fix was 2019.
Thanks for the video, so do you trust the Matek GPS or have you lost confidence in it? I also noticed that tou were using ButterFlight is BetaFlight better for GPS rescue from what you have been testing?
Iceman on a failsafe the angle mode on the failsafe stage 1 will turn my quad but with the switch i have to switch it first to the middle position bevor i switch it into the rescue mode. Otherwise the rescue mode won't work and my quad will drop. That's my theory. I don't want to try it 😉
My XM Plus is good for over 4 kms....Yours went into Failsafe because your Lipo blocked the antennas. Mount the Lipo under the quad. Also, do not use the LBT Firmware on your 2.4 setup, its power restricted, use the FCC, it's far better.
4km? so you maybe tested it on a higher altitude? On my other XM+ Range Tests i have got it to 1km and around 1.5km. I'm using the 181109 Flex Firmware - the zip file from the R9M Module contained both Firmwares for the R9M and the R9MM/R9Mini. It's the sbus firmware.

Try different protocols if you don't get the GPS data in your osd. Maybe also make sure your uarts are set up correctly and also make sure to cross rx and TX.

your bn180 is loosing satelite fix?
mine is go down from 17sats to 4 sats, them goes to 18 sats. But this can be a big problem if happen wen rescue is activated. How to fix this ?
Hi, yes it's a known betaflight issue, I recently have made some videos about it and even about how to fix it with a workaround!
Hi,I just install a matek gps in my quad I made some adjustments in the cli, changed the sats to 5 lowest I could go,now it won't arm,any thoughts? Thanks Rick
Great video
337 -3-6-9 thx!
I'm curious how you got your radio to power on and not immediately disarm ? No 2 stage arming I guess ?
Tavis Gustafson why do you think the quad would disarm when i switch my radio on again?
That's how the gps rescue mode works, you get back control when your receiver gets back the signal.
@@TorbanDallas When I switch my radio on, it always starts as disarmed, but now I realize it's because of the two switch arming I have set up.
@@Tavdog well on my flysky radio it wont turn the radio back on until you have the switches in a certain position which meant it disarmed the quad in flight quite annoying. I guess i could have just gone old school stick arming to avoid that.
Do you know what Happens if the quad looses sats for a second while it’s in return to home mode?
If the quad loses sats while you are flying, and the sats are dropping below your min sats, the GPS rescue mode won't work and in case of a failsafe, your quad would disarm. But I don't know what happens when your quad loses sats when you are already in the rescue mode. Maybe it also disarms, but I can't imagine that it would lose Sats on the return to home flight with a higher altitude on a straight line.
my sats sometimes go down to 7 when I fly steep curves and rolls. I lowered the min sats to 5 so I can be sure it won’t effect the rth... HOPEFULLY
But you are right that it probably won’t happen when it goes in a straight line.
I would suggest you to set gps min_sats=0 because otherwise it would not arm indoor.
Does the necessity to do new GPS calibration for each new flight? Thanks in advance, and salute from Brazil.
What kind of calibration? You just need to wait for enough satellites. At the first flight at a cold start of the module it actually takes a few minutes. But on every next flight when you are out flying, the module immediately finds the satellites.
Hi tell me please how you get betaflight on helios fc
Hi, it's not possible any more with bf 4.x, but I have a new GPS Rescue video with Betaflight.
Excellent explanation. I have done dis to end it wont work it felt out the sky. My rssi goos not to zero it stays at the latest input. I run the r9 module on a external battery.

Well, you see what's to do to set up the gps unit in my video, do you think it's difficult? If you got it to build your own quad - the gps unit won't stop you ;)
Solder your gps unit to 5v gnd and tx rx (crossed) to a free uart on your FC. Follow my instructions, and there you go.
how low number of satelites you can use gps rescue ?

Hello, I have a problem, I managed to get the rescue mode to work, but with a switch that activates it, I can not get it to work with a failsafe, yesterday in some tests, when the taranis has stopped the quadcopter falling like a stone, and today after several changes , it has been flying stopped since it had the angle mode, but it did not return to house, I have configured in the taranis the failsafe with not pulses, and in betaflight I have set set failsafe-procedure = gps-rescue.

Anyways thanks for letting me know about my mistake 😂
gr8 video ..will this GPS BN-880 works for my Eachine wizard x220 ?plz need your expert advice?
thx, if you have a free uart port on your eachine wizard you can connect every gps module to it and it should work.
Is the GPS module only for the rescue mode, or can you programm any other things?( like automatic flights to checkpoints and so on)
Well, it even shows the flight altitude, speed, home direction and so on. In Betaflight you can't program a flight to checkpoints. For this you better check INav instead of Betaflight.
Hello torban, on the taranis failsafe mist be on hold or no pulsses or what?
On what! 😁
Both settings will work. Betaflight failsafe settings counts. But i do prefer to set it on hold.
great video. i have a question: If you have your RTH height set at say, 100m, and you are flying above that and failsafe, will it go DOWN to 100m, or will it stay at its current height for the return trip?
Great test!! What mount or holder are you using to mount the immortal antenna in the quad in that position?
Cable ties 😉
Really? Looked too rigid to be a cable tie. Perfect!
@@swissete take a look at my frsky r9m troubleshooting video - there you can also see the antenna mount.

@@EnglishTurbines i agree with you, but i can't and I don't want to mount the gps on a stalk on my freestyle quads :D

The bn-180 will work if you have a free uart.
It's cheap, small and works great.
Thanks
The LongRanger wow 14 min flight time. That's interesting.
@@TorbanDallas Aaah Ok thanks. All makes sense now.

It's possible with the GPS position that you can record in your DVR or log into your transmitter
