    The delays in Elden Ring threw me off so much and definitely was the hardest thing to adapt to, but I never felt it was a guessing game once you learned their moves. While I'm inclined to just say "get good" and move on, I keep seeing people complain about this. I've always felt this change adds a new level to learning boss move sets because you can't just dodge roll spam the second you see movement. Curious to hear what others think though

      Some of the delays and animation cancels are a bit obnoxious (Margit and Morgott come to mind), but for the most part, I do agree that it does add a new level to adapt to.

      I am definitely in that camp. The problem for me is not that you have to relearn per se, but that it feels unnatural and calculated. The instaspamming and delayed attacks could work if they were a little less frequent, but compared to the boss perfection of some of the other games, this just not right to me. You can sort of notice a tendency towards this in DS3 with Gael and the twin princes, but they never go over the edge there IMHO. I think the earlier bosses like Godrick and Margit are probably the best from a pure mechanical perspective. I also hink they missed a little with the reused bosses and the system with the spirit summoning system. To me if you summon a helper the game gets extremely easy and takes all the fun away, but if not some bosses border on a little bit too challenging. I hope that they dial down the ten hit combos and delayed attacks just a hair in future games. I want more bosses like Friede, Isshin, Nameless King, Artorias in future games.

      To me it’s just annoying when a boss can use one startup but have two different timings for when they start their attacks, or have different follow up combos starting from the same attack chain. It would be fine in a game like sekiro or bloodborne which is a lot more fast paced, but with the rolling style of DS3 with slight input delay (the rolling starting at button release, not press) which is a lot less forgiving, its kinda annoying

    • @ZachoLibre
      @ZachoLibre 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      @@CoreyisBarackObama I'm convinced that Margit/Morgott are intentionally more susceptible to the attack delays. Margit is widely considered the "noob filter" as the first (real) boss of the game, and Morgott is the filter to the endgame. If you haven't gotten to the point of being able to react to their delays at that point, you aren't ready for what's to come. In this vein, I see Ornstein & Smough in the same light.

      People hate it when people say get good. Im new to these type of games and do not get offended by this at all. It is literally what you have to do, get good, learn the game and beat the challenge. I've brought all there other games to play through and can't wait. I'm in my last playthrough of elden Ring to get last achievement. It's been the best game I've played. I was so impressed by the boss design, I thought fire giant is the hardest for me.

    What bugged me the most with elden ring was the attacking window when facing the bosses. You either have the chance to land a single hit because the boss decided to do a 20 combo piece forcing you to dodge for 1 minute straight and leave you with the stamina for 1 attack, or, when there is an oppening for attack, attack once instead of twice because by the moment you go for the second attack the boss is way faster dropping you on your knees.

    I agree with you On Demon Soul's losing 50% health and then having to worry about world tendency with phantoms was tough, DS1 yeah going back to that game certainly felt slower especially after playing Bloodborne and Sekiro, DS2 don't even get me started on the enemy placement, SOTFS Iron Keep was utter hell with Alone knights everywhere, Bloodborne although the world design was tough and forbidden woods can sometimes be confusing, I found that farming blood gems was even harder than anything, DS3 most areas are easy but my god those bosses are insane
    3 phase boss fights like Sister Friede and Slave Knight Gael were really something else and Demon Princes, Twin Princes both gave me a hard time (Never found Midir to be to hard) Sekiro I still find the combat tough the deflection and breaking enemy stance with timed blocks and attacks is certainly a learning curve, then finally Elden Ring I personally from my experience found the stun locks and wombo combos *cough cough* (Waterfowl dance) and more attacks from certain other bosses to be pretty intense, another example Godfrey's crazy stomps.

      The Demon Soul's health loss isn't actually that bad it's just a fault of the game on how they present it. If they presented it like a Dark Souls 3 situation of having your Soul form health be the true health and the Body form health be as a buff, it would have eased a lot of players minds. Yet since it starts with the Body form health, and the fact that you constantly see the missing health the entire time you're in Spirit form, makes it look like you're horribly impaired.

  • @Gondaldin
    @Gondaldin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +511

    My two cents about what makes Bloodborne so difficult is that enemies do double damage to you if they hit you during an action like rolling, jumping, running and attacking. Bloodborne encourages you to play aggressively but punishes you severely if you get greedy and careless with your aggression.
    Edit: It was mentioned later in the video, making my comment irrelevant XD

    • @rhymenoceros3303
      @rhymenoceros3303 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yep this is actually the main reason why I think most people hate Laurence. He already hits hard but add the double damage, small arena and the fact he has a fire damage effect after every hit, it means he can more easily and often proc that double damage and take out people very quickly.

    • @dyldragon1
      @dyldragon1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's a really cool mechanic in the context of that game. While dodging is more powerful than it's ever been in the series, the added risk of getting counter hit leads to many intense encounters.

    I think Elden Ring has kind of encouraged me to be patient and confident in fights, especially boss fights. The slightly-delayed-feeling timing rewards me paying attention to the bosses and having the confidence to dodge roll based on knowing their moves rather than rewarding my twitch reactions or panic rolling. Lothric Knights, Grave Wardens, the dogs, Crucified lycanthropes, the Corvians, the bigger dogs, the Corvian Knights, Pontiff Knights, I could go on. @@Bill_9999 second phase of Malenia and the fallingstar beasts stick out as examples of this. Also the second phase of Mohg, but that mostly has to deal with trying to balance the fire and his attacks.

    • @Bill_9999
      @Bill_9999 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidbondy2250 second phase of malenia has the same openings as phase 1, except occasionally her combo can be extended with a leap into the air and into a slam down. If she does that then you get a damage window where you can actually do a charged heavy with even a colossal weapon. Also Scarlet Aeonia has a very good punish window and that window for punish is even bigger if you are a mage or have some sort of range as you can attack her during her recovery. Not to mention you can also hit her mid combo if you have the balls to but just don't be greedy cuz she will more than likely cancel her animation then go for a hyperarmour kick. I do think animation cancelling is pretty BS tho but if you expect it to happen then atleast you can react in time with most weapons.
      Fallingstar beast I'm not really sure what the problem with him is. If we are talking about cave one then yeah the arena is far too small for him. The other two are completely fine imo. He's pretty tanky ig but all his moves are well telegraphed and if you didn't feel like dodging then you can use your horse to strafe all of them. Also if you attack him during his charge with an attack (to the head I think) it will stun the beast which i think is super neat.
      Mohgs phase 2 heavily emphasizes sticking close to him no matter what build you are hence why only the tip of his trident spreads bloodflame everywhere. Even if you wanna spam sorceries it's much safer to do so at close range to avoid bloodflame damage; you've gotta play Mohgs game if you wanna come out on top.
      I think the complaint about enemies having unlimited stamina comes from the fact that since combo extensions are mostly position based and in this game you can't i-frame through every single attack. Therefore you have to focus more on positioning as opposed to dodge rolling all the time, which I have come to realize is quite rewarding for the player in the majority of boss fights. Fights like Maliketh become much more easier when you realize you can bait him into his most punishable attacks by sticking close Infront of him. Sometimes his sword swings entirely miss as well allowing for many charged heavy opportunities which ultimately leads to stance break and more damage.

    I think the bosses in ds3 are pretty easy after a while because their combos are not very complex. I honestly liked the simplicity of DS3 much more than the complexity of boss fights in Elden Ring. Yes, they become much easier with every subsequent playthrough, whereas Elden Ring bosses still stomp you... It's just too much of a learning curve at times, with the culmination of it in Malenia. It's a super flashy boss fight, that's really great.. But the movesets and all set the memorisation bar so incredibly high, that it, unfortunately, becomes more of a chore than really enjoying it. for what it's worth, from a non-veteran's perspective: the delayed attacks in elden ring felt fine to me. it naturally fit into the "fuck something up -> learn from it" gameplay loop (although maybe i'll feel differently after trying the other soulsbornes)

    • @J-manli
      @J-manli 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      My issue is that the delayed timings and instant reactions/ pivots halt the "flow" of combat. In previous games when a boss starts a combo, there are (mostly) consistent opportunities to sneak a few hits in between said combos. It creates this rhythmic back and forth. In ER, while the bosses are still beatable, that flow has halted for us since said weird timings makes it too risky to engage in that back and forth. It's simply easier to wait out a boss's combo then sneak a hit in before the next combo starts.
      I half-joke when I say the late ER bosses are playing DMC5 while we the playes have reverted back to Demon Souls' sluggishness.

      @@J-manli this was my favorite part of the game. It feels like all of the enemies and bosses in Elden Ring are really trying to kill you instead of just “doing a combo” and letting you hit it before the enemy queues up it’s next move

    • @TheLordofSiIence
      @TheLordofSiIence 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The thing with "the delayed attack" is that Elden Ring does it too much. A boss' move set can be represented as the different flavors of food. Some moves are sweet, some are spicy, and some look absolutely badass. You may like all of these, but what happens if the plate is only filled with sour food. Then you have to eat at least 7 tons of that food with the only variety being a little mint leaf on the side. That's basically ER's approach to move sets. Some bosses have a varied plate, but a majority of them have disgusting, whole sour plates with very little variety, and maybe a hint of spicing with those cool looking moves.
      Since you're a newcomer, you may never receive perspective on why it feels bad to someone who has played all the other games, but the flavor analogy fits all of them as well.
      Demon Souls' plate is a puzzling combination of flavors that work out, sometimes.
      Dark Souls' plate is filled with flavors that are very much fit the food your mom cooked for you, and you may understand why it tastes so good, but others won't and might not even like it. Dark Souls 2's plate is filled with exotic delicacies that have extremely extravagant flavoring. A lot of people probably won't enjoy it, but for those who do, they receive a boon of sweet treats.
      Bloodborne's plate is the plate that everyone collectively agrees is incredible with only a few odd choices.
      Dark Souls 3's plate is pretty plain. It might even be boring, but it's refined to a point where you may not like it, but you can't possibly hate it.
      Sekiro's plate is a perfected blend of perfect flavors. The best plate yet, but it's a very acquired taste, and some may not be able to even look at it.
      Then Elden Ring's plate has some sweet, some spicy, but almost all sour. You have the small breaks, but it's mostly a filler dish. And as someone who's eaten all the other dishes, the filler dish just does not fill the hole in my heart for that sweet concoction of a perfectly blended dish.
      So yeah. In summary, ER just has too many delayed attacks. For every 1 delayed attack in Ds3, there's at least 17 in ER.
      Honestly though, I honestly just wanted to make that flavor analogy lol.

    I think the hardest part of Elden Ring is the bosses having Sekiro’s aggression while the players are a Dark Soul protagonist.
    Sekiro definitely has the best boss design by FromSoft imo. Not only do enemies actually block, they and you yourself react responsibly to each other’s attacks. They react to when you deflect, when your attack get deflected,… it’s always a back and forth between you and the boss and not just wait till you get your chance to attack especially on slow weapons.
    Making enemies block somehow make it somewhat better than other game already.
    People complain about lack of weapon, but that is the sole reason why it’s so fine-tuned compare to other game. Slower weapons even with poise will make fast enemies absolutely destroy you, while fast weapons can basically stun-block the enemies(can be seen when using Sabimaru, high monk, floating passage, spiral cloud passage,one mind)

    I'd love a deep dive into enemy placement. These games are so deep and pulling apart the layers can be very interesting
    I get that ER's bosses are a bit watered down compared to how brilliant they were before but to be fair I'm glad they threw bosses all over the place to make the open world interesting rather than what BOTW did with weapon durability, even the master sword which is ridiculous. That's like not having the moonlight greatsword at all. BOTW had to make it's open world interesting and worthwhile to explore so they made the durability system to add copies of weapons and armor and whatnot to give you a reason to explore the world they developed for years. Elden ring decided to to use smaller scale bosses in various dungeons as a means to make their world interesting and I much prefer that approach. I kinda felt like the bosses being watered down was going to happen anyway because...it's an open world and needs more stuff in it lol.
    I get some people have an issue with it and it IS a valid criticism of the game, I just can't see it as a serious issue because it fits into the scope of Elden Ring specifically, so well.
    Also I still hate Sekiro because of the combat lol I was never good at parrying and Sekiro is an entire game built around the ONE mechanic I was never good at so I feel very excluded from it and I will go back to my broken controller days over it lol. Crucible knights are impossible to cicrle behind them when they try to impale you with their shield and margit will always hit you with his staff when he does his huge strike from above and you try to roll behind his back. Theyre simply having you in their focus, just like we do. Its also confirmed that the enemies can read actions like drinking your healing potion or shooting with a bow/crossbow. They will almost always do the same move. The godskin apostles for example will throw a black flame at you for drinking.

The only complaint I could think of was how slow using estus was, and how ADP was useless against enemies or bosses that had an attack window that was longer than the invincibility frames of your rolling, such that an attack you SHOULD have dodged ends up damaging you. I didn't mind the ADP system, seemed like a cool idea, but for god sake, I don't want to feel forced to level it up just because enemies in the game have absurdly long damage output windows that punish you too much.

    I actually think that Dark Souls 3 had easy bosses (not counting dlc which has like what 3 difficult boss: friede, midir and Gael), I was playing a generic sword/shield build and I beat all bosses in less than 5 tries. I'm not even calling myself a try hard or a beast. For me Bloodborne and Elden Ring had the hardest bosses. For the original souls trilogy then it's the og Dark Souls

      @@HiImBQ I'm doing a dagger-only run for my first time on DS3, and my god Abyss Watchers & Pontiff were a brick wall for me. And Sister Friede has been the hardest boss of any of the soulsborne games I've played so far (DeS:R, DS1, DS2, BB, now DS3). People say that Abyss Watchers have low poise so are easy. Not with a dagger that does bugger all poise damage. People say Pontiff is easily parried. Not with no shield or left hand weapon.
      I feel like I chose a rough game to challenge myself to daggers only, because the health bars are huge and the bosses deal massive damage. I'm currently on Midir, and while his attacks are pretty easy to dodge, his health bar is just so enormous that it's taking forever to beat him, and that gives me a lot of time to make a mistake.
      Slave Knight Gael might be my favourite fight ever though.

Though I agree with certain bosses the flow was a bit broken at times once you got their patterns down

    The thing with sekiro is, that most of the time, there's a certain prosthetic tool, certain buff or a certain trick you can use to make a boss easier. I defeated the corrupted monk today, and after trying so many times I decided to spam firecrackers at her, hit her 2 times, pop firecrackers again, hit her 2 times, and so on.... In the end you can just defeat a boss by using tricks or by using the right prosthetic tools. Some bosses aren't that easy to cheese with the firecrackers for example, but some tools can help you deal the right damage at the right time

    Elden Ring's problem for me isn't the delayed attacks it's the Ash summons mechanic. They skewed the difficulty toward this mechanic without realizing it broke the balance of the game. Either don't use it and face bosses that are constantly spamming AOE attacks or do use them and almost all the bosses become a joke. All that being said I actually like the idea of ash summons, but it needs to be heavily reworked though.

    Elden ring bosses come in exactly two modes:
    1. Your damage+estus+hp+stamina reaches a high enough value that, as long as you get a few second to heal and learn to avoid instant death, you just outlast the boss
    2. Your d+e+hp+s is to low, which means that you need to learn the boss perfectly, which is far more difficult than in any previous title because of the delayed attacks and the almost invisible tells
    Ultimatly, both are mostly unsatisfying, in the first you do "not get gud" and so dont feel a sense of accomplisment. And if it is the second option you die unsatisfyingly and often. Of course once you mastered the boss it is glorious but until you get to that point... Franky, most people and even I myself rather go exploring somewhere else, then return and turn the boss into a type 1

    For me, even worse than the delayed attacks were bosses/enemies that had insanely quick combos so that 90% of the time if you dodge the first hit the the followup is almost guaranteed to get you. If you get hit then it's a 50/50 shot on whether you can dodge the second or will be stunlocked.

    Ds3 bosses are git gud moments? Hardly. I had to gimp my characters for that, because if you don't you get what I've seen from the majority of letsplays: people just face-tanking and/or roll-spamming bosses to death, hardly learning their moves at all. ER late game fixed this by giving the bosses appropriate damage, but didn't fix it all the way because the bosses still don't have enough health.

  • @jinkim96

    I think the video explains why ER is rather less likely to be "replayable" compared to other souls game imo. Ds3 had some challenging yet fun boss battles, sekiro (personally) had the best boss battles with the fast paced yet easy to understand movesets/patterns, ds1 and 2 had boss/enemy patterns that were easily recognizable but ER... I've played hundreds of hours in it but I still don't really fully get it.
    I still play ds3 and sekiro once in a while because of how fun the boss battles are (and have played them repeatedly over and over again) but ER kinda felt overwhelming after a while.
    If it's just a first time thing, then yes I'd say that ER is the best souls game that fromsoft has made but I'd consider it the worst when it comes to ng+ (asides from maybe ds2)

    • @chives8980
      @chives8980 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think Elden Ring and Sekiro have the least replayability of all the games to be honest. Once you get the combat down, you just need to experiment a little with the skills and shinobi tools, but beating bosses is the same 95% of the time. A lot of your stuff carries over to NG+ in Elden Ring making dungeons, ruins, heros graves, mini bosses useless to fight again, unless you want to power stance 2 boss weapons.

    Dark souls 1 - undoubtedly the hardest part - getting to the 2nd Anor Londo bonfire - before Super Londo Bros - when the two silver knight archers shoot great arrows at you while you're sprinting across a narrow arch which connects the sides of the building on both of which you have barely enough space for a fart to squeeze through, no railings, and if you get hit - you fall, you die.

    I’ve never understood why people hate elden rings delayed and varied attack times, other than, (“it’s completely random and impossible to tell, it’s so unfair🤓”). Most attacks, while hard to get down due to the delayed, are almost always telegraphed, and I don’t mean to sound like your average “git gud” comment, but if you can’t see the telegraphs or predict the timings based on how they swing, then that’s your fault. It’s definitely not a guessing game, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to walk into a new boss fight, that I haven’t done before and still be able to dodge most attacks.

    I'm on ds3 now. I just beat the twin princes. Them and the pontiff gave me the most trouble, and the twins teleporting on you from the ceiling is the height of cheap bullshit. But i got through it.
    I see tough but fair bandied about a lot by souls vets. Tough? Obviously. Fair? When enemies can one shot you through various geometry, including walls, that's not what i would call fair.

    As someone who didn't play the games in the genre before Elden Ring, I really enjoyed delayed attacks and long combos, it punished me for roll spamming and for just guessing at what attack timings felt appropriate. I always felt like I had to sit up and carefully learn the fight and then the rhythm of each fight becomes apparent. Sometimes Ashes do help ofc but they often cause bosses to behave unpredictably so I found myself using them against bosses who gave me trouble because my build wasn't good into them.

    Your description of the difference of demons souls to the other games is perfect. I'd played every game in the series except for demons souls until a couple days ago. And man I felt pampered after playing demons souls, I was like holy crap they give you bonfires like candy in DS1 compared to this. You get 4 bonfires in the first 20 minutes in DS1 compared to no bonfire for the first couple hours of demons souls and only one per area. It was that immediate "holy crap how did people even manage to get through this back in the day if this was their first exposure".
    I've done a lot of thinking about that sort of stuff the whole time playing demons souls. I mean I got hit with it right out the gate because the first small ledge that I came up to in the tutorial area I tried jumping completely out of muscle memory I picked up in sekiro and elden ring.
    But that reaction of "we like it that way". That's pretty much been my reaction to all that stuff in demons souls. Me going holy crap is this hard, but holy crap does it feel good to be terrified by a souls game again. The enemies themselves aren't the issue as their ai is so easy to cheese, but it's the unknown factor of not understanding anything. Like you are talking I Speedran the entire zone up to the red knight 5 times, not killing any enemies, then getting one shot by the knight, before I finally decided to go search around and stumbled on the shortcut. Oh and the fact I was getting one shot... I figured out the game pulled a fast one on me. I picked barbarian and my armor is literally useless. I did that horrible thing and assumed it was this games equivalent of the bandit in DS1 for doing a strength build, it is but is also a deprived lol.

    Definitely agree Sekiro is the hardest to learn but easiest to master. I think why the initial learning curve is so hard is for two reasons:.
    1: Regardless of what people say it's a soulslike game and your muscle memory fights you. You have to unlearn the RPG style of the other games to play Sekiro correctly.
    2. Because its combat is so specific the only way to win is to do exactly what it asks of you. And in the other games there is much more variety in tactics that you end up winning based more on your style. Which is easier to learn bc it has more flexibility.
    Sekiro forces you to adapt to what it wants and that rigidity can be hard to learn. But once you do, it's also what makes it easier and you always know exactly how to beat a boss.
    And there are less unpredictable or "unfair" factors the other games have for bosses who need to compensate for a variety of play styles.
    You also don't really have to worry about leveling, bc while there are stat increases it's significantly less than the other games and there's no armor or weapon types to worry about, so generally you can assume you're exactly the strength you need to be.
