Thanks very much for this very interesting and informative conversation. It sent me to research theoretical and speculative historical gaps between Firestone's discussion of patriarchy (via Durkheim) and Dee Graham's use of the psychology of Stockholm Syndrome - looking for intervening historical traces of that psychology at work to create the culture that teaches women subordination. Apropos of all this, I've stumbled on this literary history text , which dovetails with the webinar discussion: "Hebrew-French Wedding Songs: Expressions of Identity" by Kirsten A. Fudeman in Vernacular Voices: Language and Identity in Medieval French Jewish Communities, University of Pennsylvania Press (2010) (pp. 124-150) (available on JSTOR). Explores courtly romance literature and medieval Jewish wedding literature and music, and the literature explicitly or implicitly describing rough or forced consummation of the wedding night, abductions, etc. Takes the historical "evidence" back about 700 years.
