Luton Town haven’t played in English football’s top flight for three decades. Luton’s story is one that involves a rise from non-league, administration, a rickety old stadium and a remarkable play-off final.
This is the story of Luton Town’s rise to the Premier League.
Told by Seb Stafford-Bloor, illustrated by Craig Silcock.

These players weren't born superstars lol. Salah for instance played in the Egyptian league which isn't exactly rich
Luton's fall to the National League and up to the Premier League is why we must always reject and fight against a Super League.
Well, it’s another reason anyway!
We must fight against cheats like City PSG & Chelsea they've ruined the game for everyone
True that. Football is based on Merit or sports in general ❤
Super league it just the way to fight uefa champions league monopoly by uefa
It's why the american closed system is garbage. Nothing like this can ever happen.
Luton town surviving relegation this season would be an incredible milestone if they manage it and I think football neutrals would love it
Not gunna happen sadly. Theyll be as bad if not worse than Derby were
all the sides promoted last year (Forest, Bournemouth and Fulham) survived with former champions Leicester dropping alongside Southampton and Leeds, who only came up the year before. Anything can happen. Fulham even finished 10th.
@@SantomPh Leeds came up 3 seasons ago.. At least know what you're talking about if you comment little one
Absolutely, I’ve been asking about a video about Lutton Town bcs I didn’t know all the facts. But now I just love the club even more.
The romance of football is still there.
@@Lordon7e7eueu And he's right about everything else, which indeed is the point.
In Germany we actually have more of an underdog story. FC Heidenheim. They split of from their parent in 2007 and since than have jumped up from the 5th to the first division. If you count the year before that, they actually rose up 6 times, because of a change in the league system. All under the same coach, who led them to the 5th division as a captain and since than as a coach. He‘ll be the longest serving football coach in German professional football at the age of 49
And also got promoted to top division this season?
@@Amaling Yes, they actually clinched the 2. Bundesliga Title with a 99th-Minute Winner (after leveling the score in the 93rd Minute). They were forced to win and would've otherwise faced Stuttgart in the Relegation Play-Offs.
@@Amaling ... as league champions on the final day.

1:21 - And overlooked was Bournemouth and Rotherham who both started with a -17 point deduction that season as well. Now, Bournemouth and Luton Town will see each other in the PL while Rotherham is in the Championship.
Hopefully Bournemouth get relegated next season because after the last day of the season Bournemouth deserve to get relegated and then Bournemouth deserve to get relegated until they reach the 6th Division and go out of business because they kept Everton up so they don't deserve happiness.
@@kleptrep94 Hopefully Bournemouth will stay up for ever for getting rid of Leicester, who will now fall from division to division until they finally go bankrupt and are turned into a crisp factory.
@@MrSniperfox29 No at least Leicester City's done something in the premiership, Everton's done nothing, Everton have achieved nothing, Everton are a tumour on the Premiership, we already have Liverpool, we don't need Liverpool's Useless Cousin.
Also Bournemouth lost 9-0 last season, Bournemouth aren't a Premiership Calibre Team, Bournemouth's lucky that they're in the Premiership which consists of like Manchester City, Arsenal (???), Brentford, Brighton and like 16 terrible terrible teams and the jury's out on Arsenal not being a terrible terrible side. Like the state of our so called Top Flight when a side can survive after losing 9-0. The Premiership sucks dude, like the Championship is where it's at.
Sincerely yours, a Walsall Supporter.
I think Rotherham may have stabilised themselves now as a surviving Championship club after the successive years of yo-yoing between there and League 1. Big psychological barrier broken last season although still in the dogfight.
@@kleptrep94Clearly they are more Prem caliber than Leicester, or they wouldn’t have finished above them🤣

Luton’s rise is truly a remarkable story. As a Brighton fan it is great to see other clubs come back from near death and get back to the Premier League
And Luton did it without cheating !
A bit like when Blackpool inexplicably won promotion several years ago, I imagine that most supporters (and EVERY casual) will be pulling for Luton Town this upcoming season. How can you not? It's a lovely story and something any fan of the game itself can get behind.
I remember that Blackpool side. Ian Holloway said preseason he was furious at the pundits who predicted they would break Derby's 11-point futility record, until he saw the fixture list. Then they won 4-0 at Wigan in the opening week and made a real go at it despite having a championship-at-best side. Their last game at Old Trafford against champions Man United they still had a chance at survival despite starting 9 of the same starting XI who started the playoff final the year before. They took the lead at Old Trafford before losing and got relegated.
Blackpool were bigger underdogs TBF, mainly bc lower Prem sides were less financially well off back then
As a fan of another club stung by the collapse of ITV Digital, I have nothing but love and admiration for Luton. I think they will surprise people next season and more power to them. Gary Sweet is right, if you turn your nose up to Kenilworth Road, you don't love football and you certainly don't respect the pyramid.
They also had a great team in the 80s with lots of international players including about 5 england ones( Mick Harford, Ricky Hill, Brian Stein, steve foster, paul walsh) finishing 7th in league and winning league cup
I remember filling my Panini Album with Luton in it back then
Remarkable hairstyles, tight perms and mullets on every page and a smattering of a dying breed, the comb over
Great memories!
Let's go Luton! Hopefully finish ahead of Chelsea.
Given how bad we have been this season it wouldn't surprise me lol
But I am almost certain we won't have a shambolic season like this next year 😂
@@rohithraman6488 you should spend another billion, that'll make it an achievement and make you proud when they come 8th.

I really loved Kenilworth Road when I first saw it on google. It's got a nice and warm vibe. The small stadiums offer the raw feeling of football, which some of the big stadiums don't
New football fan here. I would definitely watch them in the PL next season. Must be surreal for the supporters of the club.
Hope Preston North End and Notts County will return as well as soon as possible to the Prem, at least for one season.
@@SuperClappy1984 My bad, I was thinking about playing at the highest level, it is so sad for them, they are the only former English champions(the first champions, also invincibles) that haven't played PL football, not even First Division since 1961. Notts were extremely unlucky, they were relegated exactly during the last season before the Prem was formed.
How nice to see such a traditional stadium with owners who care about the club's history and don't buy their way to success. Don't change, Luton Town.

In Portugal, we have another example of consecutive promotions like Luton. Os Belenenses, from Lisbon. The team was actually one of the biggest names in Portuguese football up until the 60s and one of the five clubs that won the championship but in 2018, after years of dispute, the club members decide to split from the investors' team (much like AFC Wimbledon) and restart in the last division - the 7th - an amateur and regional league. Since then, the team managed to get 5 consecutive promotions and next season will play in the 2nd division. Moreover, two of the players: André Serra and Alex Figueiredo have been doing this journey with the team, the first being a regular presence in the starting eleven! And curiously, after being relegated last season from 1st division, the investors' team was again relegated last weekend and so will play in the 3rd division next season... Five years later, football showed that it still belongs to the fans!
How about some coverage on one of the best come backs of all time? Sheffield Wednesday overcoming the 4-0 first leg play off defeat at Peterborough to get to Wembley and ultimately, back to the championship 🏆 🦉
Gonna be hard a old season but good luck to Luton and the Luton fans, enjoy the premier league!
I'm so proud of what my hometown club have achieved ❤
And most fans say that Luton Town wouldn’t handle the Premier League next season and are another team to go back down to the Championship. Well I hope that they are wrong.

These promotions make EPL interesting. The smaller clubs fighting with limited resources is fair representation of life.
I have found the team to root for this year. Thank you!
I live in Luton, and seeing them get promoted has been incredible
I always remember back in the first division days when they played at Liverpool, and their goalkeeper got injured and had to be replaced by the outfield player Kirk Stephens, and he went to the Kop end, and they all broke into the chant there's only one Shakin Stevens.
5:25 small bit of pub quiz trivia; the only player to captain a club through all four divisions of English league football was Hull City's Ian Ashbee.
Luton town is a pure passion unless like mancity or united which has been more like a bussiness deal than a football club i hope luton town restore a football royality in PL any stay as long as they can
Great achievement. Can't wait to see them in the pl. I do wonder how quickly Wrexham might be able to replicate this though.
Absolutely great content as always guys. Your figure's on net spend for Burnley are absolutely mile off though. We spent around 40 million, but that doesn't account for the sales of Collins, Cornet, Pope and McNeil, which probably total around 50-60 million off the top of my head. Nothing to take away from Luton's incredible season, but doesn't hurt to be accurate all the time.
Amazing story and to get this far by not spending big bucks and operating on a balancing the books basis. What hope it gives to other clubs in trying reach top heights. Kenilworth Road will be a real culture shock for many other Premiership sides and if they can turn it into a fortress to amass points, it could well keep them in the division. That would be great for the game as long as they're not doing it at the expense of my team The Toffees.
They remind me a bit of Burnley in a way who were the PLs true underdog story for a long while. Traditional club who came out of nowhere to take a PL spot. Hopefully it ends the same way where they become less underdogs and more mainstays.
Picked Luton in Retro Bowl, love this club, stay up Gentlemen!
I personally think it's very fitting for a story about underdogs to be narrated by THE Dog Mackenzie
In Belgium, there was one club who had a Cinderella story, namely Royal USG (Union Saint Gilloise). After being enslaved from top-tier of Belgian football for almost 50 years, they somehow got promoted back in 2021 and had a fantastic run on the first season since the promotion. Having influenced by Brighton's owner Tony Bloom, the club somehow won the league, but not before they narrowly missed out the championship playoff to Club Brugge. The ridiculous league run also meant they qualified for the Champions League qualification round. Despite it was actually short trip due to the 2-3 aggregate loss against Rangers, the club still qualified to the Europa League group stage and topped the group that contained Braga, Malmo, and fellow German underdogs Union Berlin. The Round of 16 was a rematch of the group stage against the latter, with USG prevailed 6-3 on aggregate (3-3 at Berlin, 3-0 at Brussels). At the end, the club lost to another Germans Bayer Leverkusen in last 8 by 2-5 on aggregate, despite having big advantages to win due to nervy 1-1 draw away from home. They also narrowly missed out the league title to Royal Antwerp after scoring a late equaliser to win their title, which was followed up by conceding 3 goals in last minute against Club Brugge.
Right now living in and cheering for Luton must be one of the most AMAZING experiences for sports fans... That is why futbol is so amazing. I know half the town is jumping on the bandwagon!!!
This only happens on football manager so to see it happen for real is actually charming when you have all the money in the prem also. Good luck hope you stay up as your ground is going to claim a few big scalps probably.

German football got a 74,649 capacity stadium in the second Bundesliga. That maybe also a record, being the largest stadium for a non top-flight club.

As a luton fan good job on this! To go from away games like welling utd or dartford or alfreton town to the likes of manu and Liverpool... just unbelievable. We will get relegated? Maybe. But tbh i dont even care. Just living the dream
They were some mad gaffs in the conference. Gone from Paul Carden to Tahith Chong in 10 years too….
Luton being a small club in PL today is surely an underdog story. But to label them as biggest would an overstatement. Blackpool, Bournemouth are all up there
some teams in the prem spend more than a 100x what luton spend per player bruh
Aren’t they not even going to be able to play their games at those grounds. It doesn’t meet Premier League reqs for broadcasting purposes among other things and I’ve heard renovations won’t be completed this season. Be interesting to see a match played there but unfortunately doesn’t look like it’s going to happen unless they stay up for next year.
despite the sheer triumph of luton's recent plight to the premier competition, i will always refer to them harshly as dirty luton, on account of having been a listener to the max rushden hosted "guardian football weekly".
0:35 can't believe i'm in a tifo football video
It will never be matched, not until the game has a complete rebuild from the top down and the premier league is brought back down to earth.
Anyone writing Luton off needs their head checking. Yeah, sure, there's a really good chance they go down.....but wait until Haaland, Salah, Casimero and so on, have to go away to Kenilworth Road. EVERY team is going to be EXPECTED to win comfortably, so they will have zero pressure on them. Its also a stadium without all the creature comforts, and it will feel really hostile for away teams. I could see them getting 10 wins at home on guts and grit and noise alone. What they do with the other 28 games will decide whether they stay up or not.
Us football fans love a good underdog story and i know Luton are not going to dissapoint up the Hatters
Burnley’s net spend was 33 million in the black - had player sales totalling 70 million and only spent about 40 (most of which came in January by which time it was looking like we were going up) - not to downplay the achievements of Luton, but I think it’s unfair to come in and suggest we bought our way back into the big time

I'd like to hear more about how a team with less money than their rivals got promoted. Was it due to superior tactics? Did they manage to find quality players that all their wealthier rivals somehow missed?
It's hard to fully explain, but we have an incredibly wise board who made excellent recruitment decisions over the years. Each of our last few managers has been the perfect choice at the perfect time (other than G Jones who was useless). The club has made really shrewd signings who generally go on to play at a much higher level that people would have thought possible. They're also careful about the characters they sign, so we have a very harmonious dressing room because they're basically all good eggs who fight for each other and the team. Never any big egos. And then of course the playoffs themselves involve a lot of luck.
