  • In 2020, from January to June, I spent most of my free time working on building a stock photography portfolio. The driving force behind this decision was the hope of developing a new source of passive income while doing something I love. Having no prior experience, I made a lot of mistakes early on and most of my assumptions were completely wrong. So that's what this video is about. The five things beginners should know before getting started. In this video, I will cover everything from understanding the differences between commercial and editorial images, to how to deal with rejections and my strategy that helped me to produce my best selling images.

    So if its public domain and news worthy it can be uploaded? I am a little lost because further into the this document you said, to edit out any commercialized signs. Political leaders have them everywhere along with protests. So, I guess my question relates to: Yes, we can have related to topic of politics and protests or No we can not have signs showing for politics and protests?

    • @ChrisCurry
      @ChrisCurry  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There are two types of stock images you can submit. The first is Commercial. These images can't have logos or show people's faces unless you have the appropriate release forms. The second is Editorial. You can show people's faces and have company logos but these images can't be used by brands commercially. So it's likely you won't sell as many of these unless you're images are super relevant/newsworthy. That's the difference between Commercial and Editorial. Hope this was helpful and good luck.

    • @Moodboard39
      @Moodboard39 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Shutterstock, like any stock photography agency, may reject your photos for various reasons. Here are some common reasons why Shutterstock might reject your photos:
      1. Technical Issues: Shutterstock has specific technical guidelines for image quality, resolution, focus, exposure, noise, and composition. If your photos don't meet these requirements, they may be rejected. Common technical issues include blurriness, overexposure, underexposure, excessive noise, or poor composition.
      2. Intellectual Property Infringement: Shutterstock has strict guidelines regarding intellectual property rights. If your photos contain copyrighted material, trademarks, logos, or recognizable people without proper model releases, they may be rejected.
      3. Lack of Commercial Appeal: Shutterstock is a commercial platform that caters to a wide range of customers, including advertisers, designers, and publishers. If your photos don't have sufficient commercial appeal or market demand, they may be rejected. This could be due to factors like subject matter, composition, lighting, or overall quality.
      4. Over-Saturated Content: Shutterstock already has a vast collection of images, and they strive to maintain a diverse and unique library. If the subject matter of your photos is oversaturated or if they resemble existing images in their collection, they may be rejected.
      5. Inappropriate Content: Shutterstock has strict guidelines regarding inappropriate or offensive content. If your photos contain explicit or offensive material, violence, nudity, or anything that violates their content policies, they will likely be rejected.
      6. Poor Keywording or Description: Accurate and relevant metadata is crucial for the discoverability of your images. If your photos have inadequate keywords, irrelevant descriptions, or misleading information, they may be rejected.
      Remember that Shutterstock's guidelines and standards may evolve over time, so it's essential to stay updated with their current requirements for submitting photos. If your photos are rejected, try to understand the reason behind it and learn from the feedback to improve your future submissions.

    • @ChrisCurry
      @ChrisCurry  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@basictoglamchictravels Hi, the challenges I had were around the SS approval process. I spent a full day shooting in Manchester, uploaded 30 videos to SS and about 90% of them were rejected. The reasons they gave were out of focus footage or noise and artifacts. I shot my footage with a GH5 and a gimbal, so the quality should have been fine. I think the real reason I had so many rejections was because my footage wasn't interesting. If you really want to be successful with video, I would organise shoots with models and target specific niches such as tech, health care or travel etc. Hope this helps and good luck!

      In what world do you expect a complete beginner to be making £5k per month? :D Please could you share a link to your friend's portfolio?
