    also if you don’t mind my chiming in, when I have tested the filters for which one to use, I also view the histogram. It is a pretty good indicator of which filter to use. The histogram should be in the middle and even as possible. You will notice that with a too light of a filter or too dark the histogram goes way far to the left or right. Thanks for your videos! super appreciate the time you spend to help others.

    Jake, Thanks! Once again packed full of info. I just flew a sunrise city skyline with my Mavic 3 this morning and I didn't want to return to swap ND filters. A bit of a challenge, but I started with a 16 and flew several passes to burn through the battery, but after, I certainly had to go up to an ND32 once I had the drone back. But I find with such directional light the east face of the buildings were almost blowing out the highlights and the south facing shadows were pretty dark.

    Hi Jake.....Air 2S came with 4,8,16,32 ND's. Then I bought 8 pack Freewell ND/PL. Being new to all of this. My first attempt looked terrible. Took video of a sunny day 2 hours before sunset. Left camera on auto and used a 4 ND/PL. The video ended up with blotchy dark blue segments as I yawed around. So after watching this gives me a better idea how to calibrate my settings and filter choices. By the way. As fast as you speak. You'd qualify for an ATC at an airport.....LOL

    THIS is exactly the kind of stuff amateur photographer/drone pilots can use. I have tried and true methods I rely on, but ALWAYS appreciate variations in approach to getting these right. I like VND for the convenience of keeping one filter on the drone, fast tuning of exposure, etc. They are not perfect, though with 2 pieces of glass can introduce weird flares, vignette and other undesirable aberration.
    The hardest choice for me is when I have variable aperture. Would you:
    Adjust as much as possible with aperture, adding ND Filters,if still needed to reach 180 shutter OR:
    Go for a mid-level aperture, with the better image quality provided, and use as much ND Filtering as needed to do most of the light reduction, having aperture at an optimal setting?
    I'm an analytical type (if that wasn't painfully apparent) and get caught up over-thinking things. By the time I've settled on a plan, the sun has set, and the moment is lost, lol!

    • @JakeSloan
      @JakeSloan  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I typically go the second route with VNDs. Set them so I have the widest option for settings on the drone without needing to come back land and adjust.

    Thanks for the clear explanation! So, if you are filming by daylight, 90% chance that you have to put on a ND filter right? And why not using a variable ND filter instead of pulling of and putting on different ND filters. I am always scared to damage the gimbal as the gimbal of the mini 3 feels so fragile.

    • @JakeSloan
      @JakeSloan  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      there aren't many variable ND filters for drones but if one is made for your model of drone then yes absolutely, it makes it so you only need to carry 1 or 2 filters instead of a whole set

    Great video! I’m looking for an MD filter/PL for the beach that will make the water look the same or more blue along with the sky… I just bought PolarPro ND filters and CPL and I’m not too impressed… It looks the most blue with no filter at all. I’m thi linking ND8/PL since it’s the lowest number came with I don’t have a 4 and even though you said it’s most likely for a cloudy day could I still use it for what I’m looking for at the beach?

    • @JakeSloan

      I’ve also used an ND 8 on cloudy days especially around water with great success. On polarized filters make sure to rotate it around to get the best position but on cloudy days you will see little to no effect as there isn’t really any direct light to block with the polarized filter
