This has to be the craziest thing I've seen on your channel. Such crazy actions take you into the realm of legends. I'm very curious about a Slim Shady 2.0
Looking forward to part two. There should have a rule you can use anything from a basic builders store apart for foam Insulation boards or expanding foam.
Loved it. Had such a stupid smile on my face all the way till the end. It's like Topgear and their "genius" testing ideas. This is a true entertainment. Respect, man ❤
Tbh this was really sick. You know what would be fun? Do a challenge with a few pro windsurfers that they need to make their own board and do a race. Maybe even slalom x stuff too depending how much of a challenge you want to make it. Really keep up the good work love your videos and even use them when I give windsurfing lessons or to show people who are struggling with for instance light wind plaining. Hope to see you once and race with you on the foil!
Brilliant. It reminds me of when, many years ago, we made a wooden ironing board into a snowboard. The conversion entailed (1) removing the legs (2) spraying it gold (3) attaching a person with roof-rack straps. It was not very good (it didn’t budge at all), though it looked fly. But it had even less rocker than Slim Shoddy 😂 God only knows how you got this monster up to 17 knots, or pulled off that gybe on the wave. Stunning! Keep it up and we’ll see you winning in Lanzarote on a true full-wood slalom…
Please continue that was the funniest windsurfing video I have seen 🎉🎉🎉😂 On a plank of wood you still jibe better than I do on my freeride board. I doubt my life choices that lead to this fact😅
Dear Nico, where do I even begin to express my admiration for you? When I first stumbled across one of your videos about three years ago, I was instantly impressed with your charisma and windsurfing expertise. While some of your more recent videos haven’t been as tremendously entertaining as the classics, this one was something special. The sheer ingenuity required to make a vessel that works so well from was downright impressive, and I was shocked when you made such an amazing gybe on the board. Nico, you have restored my faith in the internet windsurfing community and for that I am forever in debt to you. Sincerely yours, Daniel
40 years ago, Mike Waltze took down a hollow-core door from his bedroom, mounted a sail and fin on it and got it going, then when home and rehanged the door. Steve Wilkings took photos of all of it. Significantly lower stakes than your project, and significantly more flotation. Still, bravo, especially on that live-or-die jibe. Next step: put a foil on it. Also, big up for the Midnight Oil clip.
I remember seeing the photos of Mike Waltz sailing a door, although I never knew he rehung the door. Isalways wondered why he sailed it with the door handle still on.
Making a reaonsable sail out of some kind of cloth is a lot harder, i assume. I've made one out of bedsheets, but i never tested it on the water. It's shaped like a modern sail, it has battens etc. I just never tested it. I wanted to see how crappy you can build a sail and if it would even survive long enough to come to a plane.
You make it out of a tarp. Pretty common on home built sail boats. The tricky part is the mast and boom. You can do it with 2x4's and broom sticks but its really heavy. Use a rope loop for the joint with the board.
Most impressive gybe ever!! 🤣 So funny!! We look forward to your improvements! (And, hopefully, a guest carpenter coach to keep you from hurting yourself in the shop.)
This was a brilliant project! So cool and rewarding to make something with your own hands. Out of all your gybes I've seen, this has to be the best, simply because it enabled you to get back to the shore. 🙂 It will be great to see the 2.0 verson. Can you make it from a lighter wood, that doesn't absorb water?
you got me a constant grin on my face the hole video! what an amazing idea ! i guess you learned a lot ! it would be such a nice competition at PWA when every rider have to make his own board in 4 hours and then competing on it :D
Thanks for proving something for me. I have shaped my own boards since the late '80s and one thing that always pissed me off was the long held misconceptions that rocker is what makes the board turn. It certainly has an effect on how the board turns but you just proved once and for all that a flat board will carve jibe just fine! BTW that was fun to watch.
Such a cool experiment, love to see it actually worked, would be worried on wood splinters in my feet. If you had put dome paint of laque it would have been a bit more water resistent Doing experiments means your spirit / mind is free, so a good sign Curious on the location story Keep making these videos, young kid on the water making fun
Great fun! I was laughing out loud watching this. Can’t believe you made the first gybe (shows how strong your survival instinct is, haha). It is great to see some goofy fun from a pro athlete.
Planing jibe with this lmao! Really cool and fun project! Some ideas to expand the project: - strap a layer of polystyrene between two planks to increase volume - Try with a foil!
Geiler video Nico! You guys should do a race in slalom x where competitors have a day to create their own diy boards and then race them on a slalom course! Imagine the fun 😂
Nico, you have some skills - as a carpenter, too - 😅. I am very impressed that you managed a planing gybe, and had the audacity to try in pretty cold water. What was your plan B, if you did not make that gybe?
Years ago (many years ago) my father and I tried to make a Snow Wind Surfer. Basically, a plywood platform mounted to two alpine skies. It didn't work as well as "Slim Shady". Looked like you were having a blast. Once moving Slim Shady seemed to carve pretty well.
Amazing, Nico. There ist a Special OSB coat available that might help that the boards keeps its weight. Maybe this is now a new more ecofriendly technology for surfboards 😂
I would recommend 2,1 mm more rocker in the tail up to 46 cm of width, and then 6.7 degrees more scoop to the front. A bit more double concaves until 98 cm from the nose will improve handling in chop dramatically. Moving the mast base 9 mm more forward, and using a fin with 2 degrees more rake would do it... And again, if you use 100 % titanium screws you would save 0.5 grams of the total board weight giving new levels top end speed and control... This is really crazy 🙂 Per
Insanely dangerous use of a table saw at 0:11. (Pushing a plank across the table saw like this whilst holding the family jewels in the line of fire. 🙈 It doesn't even matter that there is no splitter installed as well...)
Pretty good sailing skills Nico - but I seem to remember Paula Wickens - (UK pro windsurfer) showing her ability by sailing a door back in the ‘80s - now that is some skill…
If you wrap it with glassfiber and epoxy its a wood sandwich board 😂 It would be better to use 2 thin sheets plywood with foam in between (pur insulstion foam). That way you can give it a good amount off scoop, get the finbox inside the board and give it some volume. To add more strength in the right places add more layers of plywood. If you need more advise please send me a message, i really like the idea 😂!
I’ve just saw your video! 😂😂 great! Is it not an idea to organise a (what we call in holland) an “zeepkisten- windsurf-race” 😂 Max price for contesters to prepare a board and than race!
In the past 15 years Ago I make a Sea Lion replica, with 4mm marine Plywood, carbon strrp and extruded polistirene strips (EPS) like a vacuum wooden hollow board, and externally a 300 gr E-glass around 1 layer, overlapping the rail. Project cost about 150 euro, it was fast to do around 1 week of work and the board was fine. Final weight around 9-10 kg
Companies: there is our brand new 3000€ surfboard made out of NASA carbon fiber, unicorn poop and rainbow dust! Nico: Well I have this wood laying around....
This has to be the craziest thing I've seen on your channel. Such crazy actions take you into the realm of legends.
I'm very curious about a Slim Shady 2.0
This is one of the best things I've ever seen on the internet (& I've been using it for 35 years). Genius!
Best windsurf TH-camr. Thanks for the entertaining content Nico😄
Looking forward to part two. There should have a rule you can use anything from a basic builders store apart for foam Insulation boards or expanding foam.
As a boat builder i love seeing this.... as designing on the fly is what its all about... well done
Loved it. Had such a stupid smile on my face all the way till the end. It's like Topgear and their "genius" testing ideas. This is a true entertainment. Respect, man ❤
Fantastic video Nico. Hilarious.
Manufacturers are sweating and shaking in their shaping rooms.
This is the barn door board revolution 😂👍💥
Tbh this was really sick. You know what would be fun? Do a challenge with a few pro windsurfers that they need to make their own board and do a race. You jump on this one better than I do - on the regular board 🤣
Me too 😂
You’ve touch the feeling of the pioneers of windsurf ! Passion and hope , then let’s go see how it works .
Brilliant. It reminds me of when, many years ago, we made a wooden ironing board into a snowboard. Thanks a lot for taking the tine to write top such a nice comment, Daniel!! Much appreciated! Keep on ripping

Dont put a foil on it.
The door came from his store and when he re hung it he left the uni on it for all to see.

I remember seeing the photos of Mike Waltz sailing a door, although I never knew he rehung the door. Isalways wondered why he sailed it with the door handle still on.
Amazing that you made it work and nailed the first jibe perfectly ! 🤣 Big respect!
You could also do the opposite now and make a sail out of bedsheets and put it on a modern board
@@Nico_GER7 ein Segel aus nem Besenstiel und Bettbezug basteln
Sure, Nico will do that too :)

That is just awesome, was watching with a big smile on my face! Thank you for making my day!
It is amazing that is actually worked.
Best video I've seen on TH-cam for a long time! You had me truely entertained and inspired to try more fun and random things.
Finally someone did this! Really cool video Nico and now u can say the smallest board u ever windsurfed was 0 liters🔥
Most impressive gybe ever!! 🤣 So funny!! We look forward to your improvements! (And, hopefully, a guest carpenter coach to keep you from hurting yourself in the shop.)

"Sag was willst, aber die Leute interessieren sich für das Board..!
😂😂
Ich schmeiss mich weg😂
Geiles DIY- Video😂🤙🤙🤙
so cool ! the more you improve, the more it will look like a modern board 😀

It certainly has an effect on how the board turns but you just proved once and for all that a flat board will carve jibe just fine! BTW that was fun to watch.
Really enjoyed that! Can't wait to see the next developments :)
Amazing. I can't believe that you did gybe perfectly with this wooden board. 👏👏👏👏
Drip the board in epoxy! I love going back to the roots...windsurfing roots.
Such a cool experiment, love to see it actually worked, would be worried on wood splinters in my feet.
If you had put dome paint of laque it would have been a bit more water resistent
Doing experiments means your spirit / mind is free, so a good sign

It is great to see some goofy fun from a pro athlete.
The fact that you actually got planing on that is crazy and shows how good of a windsurfer you are 👑
Also Nice sweatshirt HABIBI 😂
Great video! So much fun. I would be interested to see the improvements.👌
Too cool! Reminds me of Mike Waltz windsurfing a door in the mid-eighties.
Love it!!! Please keep going with this. Makes me want to try it.
Planing jibe with this lmao! Really cool and fun project!
Some ideas to expand the project:
- strap a layer of polystyrene between two planks to increase volume

Unfassbar gut: Geile Idee und mega Gefühl für alles mit Segel drauf. Halse direkt in die Welle und mit Push weiter 😅
What a crazy idea but so much fun to watch this video!
Geiler video Nico! You guys should do a race in slalom x where competitors have a day to create their own diy boards and then race them on a slalom course! Imagine the fun 😂
When one navigates well…even a wooden board works!?!!! Oh man… it looks it’s easy!!! Good job and really fun 🤙😜👌
So fun to watch 😂🤣😂🤣. You're the best 🤴. I would love to see it with a foil 😝
Ganz geile Videoidee. Und zu krass fuhr das Brett einfach👍👍
It rememebers me to my very first windsurfboard a HiFly 444 😅😅😅
That is really funny ;-) and entertaining us! Thanks
Oh my gosh, this is hilarious. And you perform much better than me on my regular gear 😅 Thanks for the video!
Lena
We made our first boards from marine ply, laminated with epoxy and set with a rocker. I kited for years with mine.
Nico, you have some skills - as a carpenter, too - 😅.
I am very impressed that you managed a planing gybe, and had the audacity to try in pretty cold water.
What was your plan B, if you did not make that gybe?
+1 for doing this with a windfoil (or wingfoil) setup. Obviously no beachstarting unless you start off a pier.
What's the volume? Must be about 8L. Amazing that you got it going and were able to make that jibe.
The way you took the wave in the first jibe was just on point
Years ago (many years ago) my father and I tried to make a Snow Wind Surfer. Basically, a plywood platform mounted to two alpine skies. It didn't work as well as "Slim Shady". Looked like you were having a blast. Once moving Slim Shady seemed to carve pretty well.
Du bist so eine Legende😂 richtig cooles Video
Ahahah great video 😂😂😂😂
Greetings from Verona (Malcesine-Torbole area) Italy 🇮🇹
Amazing, Nico.
There ist a Special OSB coat available that might help that the boards keeps its weight. Maybe this is now a new more ecofriendly technology for surfboards 😂
Da kommt der Spruch: "Der gewinnt auch auf einer Klotür!" her. Good on you! 👍🤙
I like that board art with wood chips 😂. Keep on going and make you own board in the end!!
Great, especially that you can screw in the camera direct in the board!
Only a few cut-outs were missing for the perfekt board. 😉 🤙

Love the idea! Subscribed to see more like it!
Zehr gut das video ! !! It remembers me my boards, in 1980 ! 😁
Haha, nice one!😂 You guys never run out of ideas, brilliant!👍
Its amazing what spring weather does to the brain.
You jibe better than i do, On a plank🤣🤣
The quest to make windsurfing more affordable has begun!

New Board Brand. Finally! 😃
Crazy, and more than wonderfull !!
I would love another video with a sail made out of the blue bags from IKEA
İ love your videos man i always watch them and it makes me feel happy keep up the good work
Pretty good sailing skills Nico - but I seem to remember Paula Wickens - (UK pro windsurfer) showing her ability by sailing a door back in the ‘80s - now that is some skill…
I did see a video of Matt Schweitzer and Jim Drake windsurfing a DOOR in Hawaii... early days, just for fun..
Part 2 please😀!
I had such a bad day until I watched this video. Thanks for that 😂❤
Made me laugh out loud!!! 🤣😂
haha definitly continue with this project… first class entertainment 😀

Actually held my breath for that first gybe 😄
Haha. Same here. I was thinking...get around and the wave will help you......and he did it.
Same here!
That is just incredible, great sailing. Forget the board shop get down to B&Q
I think you could double or triple the wood to add more volume
You are crazy but entertaining 😂😂😂❤
I’ve just saw your video! 😂😂 great! Is it not an idea to organise a (what we call in holland) an “zeepkisten- windsurf-race” 😂 Max price for contesters to prepare a board and than race!
Sehr lustig 😅
Setze bitte ein Brille beim Sägen und Bohren auf ...
What's the floatation on Slim Shady? I'm guessing 15-20 liters. Like a water ski.

Epic. This will be your new most watched video

Nico: Well I have this wood laying around....
You are the hero ! Respect !!!
You are crazy! :D 🤙🏻
Haha great vid!
you destroid all what I learn of windsurf in 20 minutes, jaja
In Germany we call it „a sinker“ How good are your jibes on top of the wave?! Unreal! Does it feel better than the Decathlon „Luftmatratze“?
You are freak!! Awesome idea and skill!
Keep it going!! Love these kinds of vids :)
Thats windsurf youtube content! Perfect 😂
Awesome! Glue 50mm of high density of foam to the top and you have a machine!
First Low-tech and petrol free windsurf board ! Long live the Slim Shady
That's sick! So fun 🙂
Super unterhaltsam. Tolles Video🤙🏼
