I love your tutorials. Going to have an art themed birthday party for my granddaughter who's turning 8 in a couple weeks. I think they'd have fun doing this. I'll have to practice so I can help the kids. I can't wait!!
How was the party?! What a great idea! I have some of my best memories as a child going to friends houses whos parents let us do arts an crafts!!! I'm sure some great memories were made at the party!
this is a great tutorial! really useful tips! I was gifted a beautiful set of very nice watercolor pencils but never really used them because never liked the results. BUT this video answers many questions on why I may have not have been successful!! Will try again! Another winner Emma!
This is a nice introduction to watercolor pencils. And I love how you demonstrate playing around with new supplies. I think making small drawings like this is a great way to test different techniques when getting familiar with a new medium or supply. I do want to add a few tips: - I like using a slightly stiffer brush when activating the pigment, like a golden taklon. It seems to reduce how much I have to brush over the pigment to get it activated. And it gets into the nooks and crannies of a rougher paper, leaving it less grainy. - A wet pencil is more fragile than when dry, so never apply much pressure with a wet pencil. - Using a pencil on wet paper will flatten the tooth of the paper, which makes it difficult to get more layers on top. I would recommend only using this technique for final layers.
I watched your first watercolor pencil video and then this one, what a difference! You seemed to not be loving them before, but in this one you definitely seem to be enjoying watercolor pencils. I am coming from colored pencils and want to quicken my process!
Watercolor pencils are also a great option for on-the-go art. You can jot down a quick drawing in color when you are out somewhere where dealing with water and brushes would be tricky, and then activate the pencil when you get back home! I was gifted a set of watercolor pencils accidentally (the giver thought they were regular colored pencils) and I was too intimidated to try them for so long! But I've been experimenting with them recently and really loving them.
Lovely tutorial, as always, Emma! I recently started experimenting with a large set of medium quality wc pencils I purchased several months ago, mostly for multimedia abstract projects. I’m having a blast working with them in layers, over a wc background done with brushes. The texture, and additional layers from the pencils used many different ways, boost the pieces to a whole new level! Thank you for yet another wonderful video tutorial and continued inspiration! I see an apple in my future🌻 ;)
Great intro to watercolor pencils. I wanted to let you and your fans know that you can premix watercolir pencils. Caran d'Ache makes a palette for their Neocolor II water-soluble crayons that works great. You merely rub your pencils on the rough surface and pick up the pigments with a wet brush. A plastic cutting board with a rough surface will work, too.
Another tip that I did pick up, which I thought was great (and you touched on it a little bit) was to color dots on the edge of your painting area, then you can use a waterbrush to pick up the colors, even blend them, when you go out on location to sketch. This alleviates the need to carry a bunch of pencils with you. Of course, the colors that you put on the paper will need to be curated depending on what you might be painting....urban sketching, landscape, flowers, etc....Fun!
Thank you so much for this, Emma! I've seen many watercolor pencil tutorials that have tips on the ways that you can use the pencils: directly on paper, dipping the very tip into water, using a paintbrush to pick up color from the pencil, using the shavings or grate them to make a pool that you can then also use a paintbrush with, etc. However, the tutorials don't tell HOW to lay the color down on the paper and then go in with the paintbrush...and layering, etc. Although, I did pick up the light to dark tip from one video.
Lovely tutorial I love this! I love watercolour pencils they are my absolute favourite medium to use. It has the best of both worlds, coloured pencils and watercolour in one 😍I also love Derwent Inkense as well they have similar properties to watercolour except they are made of ink instead XD (idk if they count but they are similar to watercolour) This apple is lovely thank you for sharing your techniques! I can't wait to try this out! 😍
I really like your videos. I just found you a couple of weeks ago and I tried your gradient sky from your beginner landscape tutorial and I failed miserably!!😅 I can't afford arches paper yet but the one I have is meeden and I watch another lady who uses it all the time and her work comes out great so I thought I could try it too. But I still can't get my paper to stay wet long enough to blend and it warps when I add more water. I suppose I just have to keep practicing and see how it goes. I will stick to easier paintings and practice strokes from now on till I finally have enough experience to make something acceptable!😊
Stunning . Is there any cheaper crayons you recommend? I don't want to buy the other ones you have and not like them where as a cheaper version not so bad!!
I love how you did the apple 🍎! It looks good 👍 😋 yummy. Lololol. I eat apples all the time and I have a few sitting around thar I can try and paint 🎨 but I just can't get that Shaddow right. Oh well one day. 😂 thank you 😊. JK FLORIDA USA 🇺🇸.
Me personally I have found having 2 jars of water helpful . I use one for first rinse (and it looks like mud quickly) - then “rinse” in second jar. The second jar gets a bit discolored - but if it gets really dirty I empty both jars and start the process over again. I use the second jar as a check to see if the devious paint is out of brush.
@@susanharris-aust7886 Thanks. I have a two-compartment container that I clean brushes in and a pretty little china cup with a hairline crack that I use for clean water. I'm pretty a*** about cleaning things so most of the time I clean everything when I'm done anyway.
I ordered a set and got artist pencils instead of the watercolor pencils. I was so disappointed and they wouldn’t refund or exchange. Very poor customer experience. $75 for something I’ll never use.

At the very start of my watercolor adventure and was wondering if you recommend learning with paint or pencils?
Can you use a hairdryer to dry inbetween layers? Or must it dry naturally?

Someone talk to me about the water - clean or dirty or does it matter?

I spend so much money watching these videos😮

Why complain here?
