Experimenting with weird damascus from chainsaw chain steel.
I am able to make a solid bar from just chains pieces but the material is not fully clean. I would not attempt to make a blade out of chainsaw damascus steel only as even though it looks to be hardanable at the same temperatures of 1070 it's not as homogeneous so I'd fear the presence of weak spots.
If you want to see more about the handle construction this nakiri turned out well:
    • Knife Making: Vegetabl...
Otherwise this is a playlist with every single blade I made, there are plenty with wa-style handle construction at this point:

do you ever have issues with the style of handles you use all the time i figured if anyone you would know the pros and cons . do they loosen up at all or are they better then usual pin style or just glue

When I worked in electroplating, the first tank was a hot soapy tank to get rid of oil, then to an acid tank.
I see a lot of people doing the chains and I never see anyone properly clean the oils and grease.
Try it. Dawn and hot water. Boiling. We kept a flame under it.

Could you do; stacking beads of hard facing MIG wire, till it's an 1.5"x4" square roughly, cut it from the patent material and try forging it into a blade? That'd be interesting as well 🤔

Awesome video mate! I've done a fair bit of chainsaw chain damascus myself, and it's not an easy thing to do. Especially with all the different alloys of the chain. I did upload a video about doing it myself a while back if you're interested, but my suggestion is to just keep experimenting with it ^^ I never bothered with cutting the chain or cleaning it as thoroughly as you did. For me it's been enough to simply coil ut up on itself, give it a few tacks with the welder to hold it all together, normalise it once, because the teeth are hardened, then fluxing before it reaches the scaling temperatures. I usually tend to forge these stacks into square bar for making rings and Mjølners, and to get some interesting patterns i tend to twist it square, then draw out to final thickness. Not sure how easy that would be to translate into a knife, but you already seem to have figured that part out anyway. Good luck mate, I'm looking forward to the next one, and feel free to ask if you have any questions ^^

You have a problem with the air pockets. To fix that, try making a small square or rectangle out of some plate, coat it in some anti-seize, and layer the pieces of chain adding a spoonful of tiny steel beads. Then weld the plate together to shut the box, heat it up, and slowly start compressing the sides. After doing that a couple of times you can let it cool down, cut the ends off and you should be able to peal off the plates. And then you are left with a solid chunk of damascus.
