Yeah that's how it was in rf2. You could turn rain graphics down and not have any spray and didn't even have to use the windshield wipers. It was a total cheat.
People will complain a lot about the concern for visibility but its the most accurate thing along with the puddling, and the way the car will slip but is super recoverable. My first practice and quali in my career was in the wet at Road Atlanta, and was the most terrifying thing to do. iRacing is giving that same impression of running in the wet here, and I love every bit of it.
it will pretty awesome to get videos about rain driving from your experience! Much of us, simracers, have no idea how the car behaves in reality and now the iRacing is almost doing a 1:1 experience for this conditions, your tip and advices would be mega! Thanks for the video Dan, hope to see you soon on the virtual or real track:)
💯💯 it’s tough too because you can’t practice in the wet whenever you want to. I was lucky and got to do two 24 kart races where it rained and learned a lot that way.
I'm not really a subscriber to the idea that if one person who does it professionally likes it then it must be good. so excited to use this as a training tool for real life! I went to watkins glen for the first time and it was raining on and off all day, terrifying for having very little track experience in the wet with all those walls!
My only point of reference for wet weather racing is having competed in kart races in the rain when I was younger, but I couldn't believe how realistic this was. The aquaplaning, how it understeers and oversteers, the curbs, puddles, and especially spray, all of it just immediately felt familiar and brought me back to my karting days :D I've played so many sims' wet weather modes and nothing has ever come close to recreating that real life experience until now. Hats off to the iRacing team, it's honestly a remarkable feat of engineering.
would be amazing if you could make a series/video with some tips and tricks on what to do and what not to do in the rain. great video man, keep up the good work
How to drive in the rain series would be great. Not just the basics, but knowing how multiclass racing shapes up in the rain would be a big one for me.
Learn about the wet line and things you can do in order to find the limit without taking too many risks. Since the rain in iracing is modeled very dynamically, you'll have to adjust to the track on a lap-by-lap (or even sector by sector in tracks like the nurb). The rest will come down to practice in shitty weather
I trust your review, especially since you're a legit racer. I took a spin on a wet track myself, and even though I'm no pro, it felt surprisingly authentic. It's all about that natural feel. Having unpredictable weather in every hourly session would add a whole new level of excitement.
Thanks for the overview! It’s going to be interesting driving in the rain, but with that introduction I’m looking forward to the new iRacing Tempest addition and already feeling more confident. Additional driving in the rain would be great! Thanks!
Couldn’t wait to hear from you about the rain! Glad they nailed it and can’t wait to learn the wet line and take it to my real life track days. Hope you release the wet driving guide soon so we can get a leg up on everyone else during week 13!
Been on iracing 5 wks now and ive done some rain races and your absolutely right man it feels like the real deal i kept telling my brother dude its like drivin in the damn rain in real life!! Needless to say we are both hooked now😂😂
The only thing they could be better is that they should turned the rain light more lighter, include the tail light in the spray, it’s more of a Visual Stuff, but the rain physics……..god it looks absolute awesome, I’ve been waiting this level of rain simulation for 5 years😂, well done iRacing❤
Love it. Just tried it with the LMP2 at Spa and it's awesome. It really feels that we're driving in the rain. I think the DD drivers will have an insane advantage now.
Im so excited to try this! When i tried the rain in Automobilista 2 i was blown away how good it felt. If you hit a puddle the car hydroplaned, but really bad. Its interesting to hear you say that while the car hydroplanes, it's catchable, so i can't wait to compare! Thanks for this well done video! 9:09
The rain itself is cool, but I am most excited about going from wet to dry or dry to wet in the longer races. Making the call to go to wet tires or dry tires is going to be so fun.
It makes me happy to hear that it feels realistic. Now add in dry to wet mixed conditions like that can be found in Nürburgring. I can't wait ! I love racing in the rain. It really allows people who drive smooth to shine.
I cannot wait for it on Tuesday, and I am going from a gear driven wheel base to a DD tomorrow, so just in time for rain. Also I think you should start dual streaming to TH-cam, I don't do twitch for live streams and would love to see some live streaming on TH-cam
Hey Daniel, great perspective here. Have you tried Ams2 since the more recent 1.5.5 updates where they claim to have a similar weather system? It seems to also force you to drive the wet line and avoid rubber/puddles to go fastest. If so, is this significantly better than that? I'd be curious of your thoughts on AMS2's updated rain physics if you haven't given it a try. Thanks!
Great vid and great perspective. Would love to see some rain related content. I think we are a lot of people that are going to need it and be looking for it :)
Nice to see! Other devs will have to up their wet game too now because of this, as most of them just take the 'dry line but with less grip overall' approach.
I finally gave iracing a try because it was the only game I could play at the sim center that I could control the graphical settings on the individual sim for vr. Its mostly setup for displays on AC. I was surprised that the car/road feel was actually really good especially with dbox in iracing. I'll have to try the rain weather later sometime.
This all looks great. I can't wait to see what things like degradation looks like during the transition period from wet to dry. Will driving off-line cool off the tires and extend life during that period if necessary? Lot's of things to dig into. Exciting stuff.
I tried it as much as I could before I had to head to the airport and it was actually quite cool during the transition phase into dry. Didn’t drive long enough to burn the tires off but it’s squirming all over the place for sure

I'm keen to find out if any of the improvements to dynamic track carry over into normal dry weather physics. Because to me it's always seemed that there is only ever one line and every corner has the same unchanging grip level, at least on the road side of things.
In the end the puddles make sense in how the water is pooling around the track since they're laser scanned so they realistically would mimic real life, it's so cool, damn.
What do you think about IRacings handling overall, especially in the dry on the limit...Everything feels good until the car is about to break or breaks loose then IRacing feels the worst of all the major sims.
