Another great video Eric. Strong winds and wind shear coming off the mountains here in Colorado is pretty common and I had to learn to adjust to that very quickly. On the Six, I will land a bit fast with 0-1 notch of flaps 1 to avoid the wind pushing the airplane around. Also, keeping both tips full on landing will help substantially. Your wife didn't look happy LOL.
So, my wife is going with me to Osh the next time they have it (2021?) and I have a standing deal with her that the moment she is tired of being there she can hop on the airline and go anywhere in the country she wants. Visiting friends or back home and I’ll enjoy the rest of the week.
Awe man, I felt for Poppins, thats never fun, and as a pilot I have been there, also not fun and definitely adds some pressure to get it on the ground. Great work on the landing!
I have def seen a few of your videos where your wife is in a similar situation! I imagine the lighter airplane makes it worse based on our experience in the smaller Cherokee 180 before we got the 6. But you have way better views!
I really like when you show us the math you are doing and talking through how it affects the landing. I've never flown in a small aircraft, but I could clearly see how important taking your time and checking the math to ensure everyone's safety is, especially to you and your family.
Love the safe flying culture you promote on your channel. Always willing to try new things and test your skills but always doing so in a safe manner that keeps you and your passengers feeling comfortable in your ability. Smart choice to take several low approaches to feel out the winds as well as having a suitable alternate. Love the content!
I mean an even safer thing to do would've been to just divert. As soon as I heard that the winds were gusting 30 I would've got out of that pattern right away. I don't want to risk anyone's safety
@@taxiviaalfa Not sure I entirely agree. I think it's important to note that every pilot's safety window is different and is based on individual comfort level and experience. As long as you are not breaking an operating limit of the airplane and you are confident and comfortable in your own abilities, I see no issues with pushing the limits as long as it is done safely and smartly. He made multiple low passes to assess the winds and had adequate fuel to make it to a divert if he felt uncomfortable with the winds. I'd argue that he demonstrated a great safety culture in this particular instance.
Poppins is a saint! Thanks for putting your experiences out there - I’m easing my wife into flying and getting to see your family fully on board that sometimes you’ve got to go around, sometimes divert, sometimes say “today’s not a good day, let’s drive instead” and that’s just part of the deal is huge for setting expectations. All pilots strive to be safe, but flying with your family on board is another level of responsibility. Keep em coming mate.
8:29. We understand...we trust you... Oh man. Those words pierced the heart. The music and the production was really well done too. I'm in the middle of PPL and have 3 children under 11. There is just so much in that exchange.
I was happy to see that you were humble enough to make more than one “go-aground” attempt showing that you are a cautious as well as caring pilot. You’re safe airmen-ship will continued growth with you’re current mind set. Your wife & kids are awesome troopers! Great confidence is shown in the trust they have in your abilities. Enjoyable video with beautiful landscape and scenery. 😉
Strong work on the landing. Glad you are able to make the Sedona trip an annual tradition to get away with your family. Your work on this channel is very inspiring!
I enjoy you showing your challenges and being open with your go arounds as opposed to showing a greased landing at first attempt like many others would have.
Working towards my PPL currently and I’ve used your videos to show my wife the cool adventures we can have as a family, she actually thinks the Cherokee 6 is the best option in the future for us. Keep up the amazing work
Great video! I'm studying for my private license and my first experience with crosswind landings was about 3 weeks ago! Only about 4 hours into flight lessons and the CFI let me take the controls for the first time on landing and the winds were gusting 15-18kts. She told me how to approach the gusts and while it was challenging at first, we got on the ground without a go around even though we were prepared to. Definitely a challenging experience but with an insightful debrief and some practice on my at home flight simulator, I feel much more prepared to go at another crosswind approach. Thanks for the helpful video, cheers!
As usual, the best production on flying videos on TH-cam. Your professionalism shows. I also think a great job on showing the decision making that goes into deciding to "go around" which too many of us pilots have a hard time bringing ourselves to do - we tend to want to "salvage" the landing. It causes alot of bent metal and worse. Probably over half of my go arounds were due to gusty crosswinds. The one thing about "gusts" is that if you catch them at the wrong time they can be devastating. That Sedona plateau does make for a challenging landing. Great job.
I am definitely guilty of trying to salvage an approach or landing but in calmer conditions. When it's going to be a challenge I definitely try to adopt a mindset that I am most likely going around. Thanks so much for the supportive comment- I really appreciate it and it's really nice to know others recognize the extra time/effort I put into creating these to make them as good as possible!
What a beautiful scenery in your show.. I was very impressed with your wife for tolerating the entire situation, and your daughters are super mature!!! You’re lIrving my dream and keep them coming.. love it..
I live 20 minutes from Sedona and can't get enough of it. The Wife and I are there daily to walk doggies, Hike, and MTB. Feel free to drop the Ladies off and take me to Oshkosh. My fear of flying brought me to channels like yours. Think I may start flying an Ultralight around here next year Thanks for your content, it's very helpful and educational
Yeah Sedona is incredible. I love hiking there. I’d love to ride bikes there as well. I think it would be amazing to fly an ultralight in that area on calm days.
Some good "rowing" there. My wife keeps looking outside and keeps her arm all along the the window or armrest.. the vibrations through her arm help somehow to limit the nausea. Congrats on the great videos! really nice!.
I live in western Alaska, winds never stop blowing out here, and a lot of people fly Cherokee out here, they love them because the Cherokees do so well in the x-wind, shoot, 90% of the pilots never even tie them down! Nice job
Great job on the landing and remembering to "fly the airplane" first even with the distractions, you did an excellent job and the outcome wasn't in doubt. You always had a backup plan too! Hopefully your wife recovered quickly. Thanks for sharing your videos! Keep'em coming! Happy Holidays!
Wow! Beautiful views! I’m so impressed with your go-around decisions. The pressure to put the plane on the ground is very real when there’s family and expectations piling on! Well done - and nice landing.
Very impressive video! I really liked the low pass and getting a feel for the winds. Great video and always learn from everything you put out here on TH-cam! Keep them coming and safe travels.
Crosswind landings definitely challenge our skills. As a flight instructor I have had a few and had one student thank me for keeping us alive.....lol. Love the videos.
Oh my! I was totally with you on the 1st and 2nd passes and caught myself saying 'go around' at the same time you decided to. So happy that you and your family had a wonderful time and experience. Thank you for the wonderful story as always.
My mom thought we were in “hurricane” winds at KSEZ this Oct in similar conditions, ha! Awesome footage, as always, and really solid ADM displayed throughout.
Hey, I gotta say, you are inspiring. I really like not only that you all fly together, but are so warmhearted with eachother. You set a good example, I think. Cudos to you for sharing that. It's really valuable, what you're doing. Keep it up. Flying with a big heart. Gotta love that! Good blessings to you and your loved ones.
Recent experience with similar situation in Cessna 172 with wind direction changing constantly. Very challenging. Learned when to go around and to keep calm. Thank you for sharing this video.
Get a Reliefband for these "moments" - the zapps on the wrist work. Even if pax throw up and feel better (gallon freezer ziplocks for that), the smell is liable to make you sick. Refrain from food/drink a few hours before flying if you think its gonna be "choppy". Always tie down at SEZ, winds can change from nothing to howling inside of an hour.
The four-wheelin' looked rougher than the approaches and landing in the plane.. Your crew will get used to it. Nice cinematography. Gonna get a hat. Keep the the fun coming.
Love the merch! But watching the flight was better - tense there for a while, and certainly can feel for Poppins and air sickness! Tell her that Oskosh never has crosswinds like that!
Fun trip and a great video. Thanks for sharing your adventures! I have not landed with that much crosswind yet, hope I handle it as well as you. Keep the blue side up!
wow thank you so much. I really appreciate it. I had a hard time cutting this at first. spent 2 or 3 solid days just scrolling back and forth trying to figure out what I wanted to do with it but finally cracked it! I appreciate your supportive comment. :)
My son Tom shared this with me and I loved it! You flew right over my house when you turned from down wind to base. I got my private ticket when I was 19 going to college in Hawaii for my sophomore year. Your landing reminded me of my X wind landings on the north shore at Dillingham and I was in a Cessna 150 😬😬😬. Poppins is a great sport and my stomach is like your sighted who was behind you texting like she was on terra firma😎😎. My Son has his private ticket and is finally getting back into flying after a several year break and your videos are inspiring him! My 92 yo father has a private airstrip on PA and that is where I learned to really fly after I returned from Hawaii when I got checked out in his 1946 Aeronca Champ. Taildragger flying was a who different level of skill. I am currently not current, as I am a breast cancer surgeon here in Sedona and I don’t have the time to commit to flying that you need to be safe. I've had a similar experience with cross winds flying with the family. While super uncomfortable, the best thing to do is focus on a safe landing and knowing you always have an alternate. Great flying!
I had similar circumstances flying my mom for the first time. She's now a retired nurse, then she was telling her shift she was so psyched to fly with me for the first time. Well, it was a little choppy so I stayed in the pattern and did touch n go's so I could put down if it was to much for her. She was a trooper, kept her talking and continued pattern work. I remembered checking off left wing while asking how she was. As I heard a strained "ggrrrreeeaattttt" I snapped right to see her mike swept up as she "utilized" the puke sack. Needless to say that landing was a full stop. She recoverd like champ on the ground. Took a clean bag to work with her and just showed the bag to laughter when asked how the flight went. Good news is she will still fly with me but we need very calm weather... lol
Mama is such a trooper! I used an electro therapy band when I started my flight training because I used to get really bad motion sickness, something to look into! Great video, and your girls are stunning!
My first time doing pattern work with gusty winds ended up looking a lot like poppins. So cool to see you all traveling as a family and as always thank you for the awesome content!
Congratulations Josiah! You have been randomly selected as a winner of this hat giveaway. Please email me at flyingmonkeysocal@gmail.com with the subject line MERCH GIVEAWAY WINNER to coordinate shipping.
EXCELLENT VIDEO! Poor Poppins... I feel for her. I've felt the same way after a couple of hours of gnarly turbulence. Great video, though! Love seeing the Dynon in action. I fly one myself.
Beginning stage student pilot here. Just did my first touch and goes in wind conditions very similar to this. Watching your patience and approach is awesome.
I often use this channel as an example for my wife: "see how this nice family flies all over comfortably in their own aircraft....we need an aircraft, too!". I showed her this one and she said, "yea..no". Prepping for my check ride now and my trooper wife has supported me the whole way, like yours. Thanks for sharing your journey. It means a lot to us.
Great skills and video, in my Bonanza V35 if wind is gusty more than 20 knots I always land with no flaps (runway length sufficient). We too love Sedona at Thanksgiving. We repeated this year with a stop at Mineral Canyon.video at TH-cam. Congrats your copilot for her support!!,
Flew there from KPSP about a week before your flight so it was fresh in my mind. You had riveted to my seat, getting tense right along with you. Quite a challenge with those winds, especially given the surrounding terrain. Good job!!
I feel for Poppins!! But incredible video and good call with the go-arounds. Thanks for making these videos! An inspiration to do the same with the family!
It is really great to see you calm and more focused on the landing keep up the great job! I've experienced full sporty crosswind multiple times and on my 3rd solo I had hard crosswind but it is always nice to be challenged landing the aircraft. ✈❤
You've got a great crew with ya! Poppins pulls for the team - suffering in silence like that. Those were some very gnarly gusts right down to the tarmac, well done!
Nice job on managing the crosswind. You did a lot of good things. Those airframes are solid beasts. I hope you took Poppins for ice cream after - she earned it.
That video felt like it was only 5 minutes long, it was like watching a miniature suspense movie. I always get excited when you drop a video. Hopefully Poppins was able to bounce back and enjoy the rest of the trip.
Thanks so much for that direct feedback about how the video engaged you. I really appreciate it. And yes she bounced back really quickly and we had a great trip to Sedona.
Went and got dinner directly from the Sedona airport - got a Dr. Pepper and I was BACK in the game!! Smiling and everything - he’s turned us into peeps who love to fly - who knew?
@@poppinsh.7820 that's good to hear. My grandfather use to tell me stories about my grandmother's reactions when they encounter bad weather in his airplane.
@@poppinsh.7820 I've heard the same stories a million times lol. Mainly about when they flew into a thunderstorm. One day they were taking off from Jackson, Mississippi in a Piper Seneca. My grandfather said a Delta airliner departed before him on a cloudy spring day. Then, he heard that same airliner ask to deviate due to weather. So my grandfather became curious and decided to turn on his radar. As he was moving his hand towards the ON switch, it was to late. He said they flew right into a thunderstorm and the turbulence was severe. Even though it only lasted about 5 minutes it felt like 30 minutes. My grandmother was covering her face she probably had a minor heart attack. At least they survived and learned not mess around with thunderstorms again.
Lots of props Eric! Excellent decision making by going around, rather than forward slip it on your first attempt when you high! When you’ve passengers, the urge to get the airplane on the ground on the first attempt is on our shoulders on a bumpy and gusty landing situations and many pilot fail to use go around procedure especially what you’ve experience! 👍
Thanks! The forward slip is one of my favorite maneuvers. It's funny because I used to use it occasionally with my Cherokee 180 to get down when too high but with the 6 it just drops like a rock and slows down so easily. Haha. With the gusty winds and turbulence and no real urgency to get on the ground I decided against it on this one. :)
Nice job. The more you fly the six the more you will realize it can handle a lot of crosswind. That rudder being way back there helps. I flew sixes in airline service back in the late 90s and I found you could land the six with 25 knots across the runway without hassle...and that was to a 2500' strip, (often wet, and often at night). Keep flying and as you build experience you will feel more confident.
I just recently got my Private and this video definitely inspired me in visiting some fun, remote destinations that make it possible thanks to the amazing world of General Aviation. Thank You
Loved it! This one really showed how important passenger management is. I took my first XC as a private pilot with my dad not too long ago and the wind got stronger and gustier than forecasted while flying back. Learned a lot of valuable lessons on that flight.
Great job in crosswind, currently working on Tailwheel endorsement, would be a no go in that wind, been to Sedona 4-5 times, Love that place, Cathedral Rock is our favorite hike!
I started my PPL about a year ago with the sole intention of being able to fly my wife and two boys on fun trips, and enjoy the views at 4500. You’ve been a phenomenal inspiration, we alMost feel like we know you guys! Please keep it up, and safe flying!
Trent I'm so stoked that my videos could inspire you in some small way. It means a lot to hear that because the whole point of doing these is to share aviation. Thanks for your comment!
I would have flown on to Prescott in the valley. Winds more predictable than in the mountains. What is it they say about mountain landing...back on the ground by 11?
Most awesome video...the landing very well done. It's obvious, Safety is a top priority for you and your family. Good job! Great photography. Follow your excitement.
Beautiful Sedona! I m a pilot flying out of Ventura county and I also took my family to the Sedona area over Thanksgiving! Loved it! Thanks for this awesome content and fly safe!
Dude, your wife REALLY loves you.
-"We should go to Oshkosh!"
-Pure silence...
Lol
Another great video Eric. Strong winds and wind shear coming off the mountains here in Colorado is pretty common and I had to learn to adjust to that very quickly. On the Six, I will land a bit fast with 0-1 notch of flaps 1 to avoid the wind pushing the airplane around. Also, keeping both tips full on landing will help substantially. Your wife didn't look happy LOL.
They would have a shot at the furthest travel to the show.
It's on the way to the Bahamas ?!?! Lol that's great!

I've had a similar experience with cross winds flying with the family. While super uncomfortable, the best thing to do is focus on a safe landing and knowing you always have an alternate. Great flying!
Agreed-- good call.
Love that the central theme of the video is family and bonding. Happy flying!
Thanks so much!
Good news is she will still fly with me but we need very calm weather... lol
Haha thats a good story- I enjoyed it and thanks for sharing!!
Best entertaining aviation videos on YT
Love love love Socal! Looking forward to getting back there once the world calms down. Love the videos! Thanks for sharing.
It’s a great place to fly!
Mama is such a trooper! I used an electro therapy band when I started my flight training because I used to get really bad motion sickness, something to look into! Great video, and your girls are stunning!
The closing scene is so epic, amazing vid as always 🙌
Thanks for watching until the end!
Great decision making and technique. Kudos!
Thanks!
You have a beautiful family! Nice job on preparing for the winds and getting a feel for the approach with the baulked landings. I love your content!
Thank you so much!
Beautiful landscape, beautiful airplane, beautiful family. Hope you know how luck you are dude. Glad you made sure the door was closed this time.
I definitely do. Thank you.
Uhm - that was me who didn’t shut the door last year. Guess what I do every single time now? Double and triple check it. 🤦♀️
Watching your patience and approach is awesome.
thank you. I hope you are enjoying your training!
Glad she is supportive. That definitely helps!! Hopefully she will come around on family flying and ou can set off on some adventures...
Good job!!
Oh man thanks for that feedback. Made my day knowing you were engaged by the video in that way.
She's come a long way since our first flight together in the Cherokee 180- I barely could get her to sit in the plane on the ground. LOL

thanks guys for amazing video, and respect to your wife for bravery on flights!
@@23aviatorguy I bet those are some great stories!!
Very nice! I loved how when you weren't feeling it you went around without hesitation. Love your channel, man.
Thanks so much!!
My first plane was an archer that ended in 631. Whenever you call out Cherokee 631, it brings back many memories
Great point mentioning the internal pressure to get it on the ground, I’m not sure I’d have been able to give that a third try, nicely done.
Thank You
You should have your wife try the Relief Band. It cured my wife’s motion sickness issues and calms her down.
Great work! Handled everything about as well as possible, and still greased it in! Can't wait til the next one
Crazy crosswinds, gusting 30 would be a little out of my comfort zone. Nice work. Looked like you got tossed around a lot on that last approach.
It was pretty bumpy alright. We have been in worse bumps but coupled with actual crosswind value in my head it felt different somehow!
Great job on the landing! Your family are troopers, especially your wife!
Nice work on the landing, and video! Bravo for your wife and kids hanging in there! No flap landing if needed!
yeah if on the 2nd attempt I didn't feel the roll authority I would have gone no flaps. Good call
Definitely beyond my personal minimums. I would have been diverting to Prescott after the first attempt. Great video!
I would have flown on to Prescott in the valley. Winds more predictable than in the mountains.
What is it they say about mountain landing...back on the ground by 11?
Same for me, but then my Cherokee has two less seats than his.
Watching the whole family dynamic operate while being thrown around in the pattern - good stuff! Excellent video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Most awesome video...the landing very well done. It's obvious, Safety is a top priority for you and your family. Good job! Great photography. Follow your excitement.
Thanks a lot!
Beautiful Sedona! I m a pilot flying out of Ventura county and I also took my family to the Sedona area over Thanksgiving! Loved it! Thanks for this awesome content and fly safe!
It's a great place isn't it? Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
Your a fantastic pilot!! No shame in 3 or as many attempts you need. Well done good sir!!
Wow thank you very much!
I appreciated seeing your ADM as you did multiple attempts to get it right. Respect
Thank you. I try! :)
Such high quality videos. Bravo for getting your plane down in those winds!
Thanks!
