For the older explorers there are 2 reasons they didn't work, Reason 1: The Windows 95/98/ME explorers are for their 9x kernel, whereas modern Windows is built on NT Reason 2: Older versions of Windows by default would place you in session 0 where other apps ran, but now in newer versions (post XP) you are in session 1 and after Windows 10, session 0 is for the system only and can't be accessed by the user
You should have tried replacing the actual Windows 10 explorer.exe with the older ones. Maybe if you did that then the Windows 7 and 8 explorers would work as the shell. However surprized that Windows XP's explorer even works on Windows 10. I was however expecting Windows 7 and 8's explorer to partially function tho.
The reason old explorers don't work on Windows 10 is because Windows OS's used to be based on MS-DOS. Windows XP is no longer based on MS-DOS so Windows 10 is compatible with Windows XP explores up to Windows 10.

I think that the explorer from 9x was based off MS-DOS and Whistler's had to get some files from the drive, but the XP one is the first one with NT that can work alone.
Here is why the majority of the explorers didn't work: The .exe file MUST be in C:/Windows in order for it to access twinapi.dll (a required .dll file) in the System32 folder.

most DoS apps run perfectly on windows 8/8.1. edit: you should run these programs on a VM (virtual machine) instead of your real PC, as this can really harm it because you are attempting to run DoS programs on a kernel that can not run DoS programs, even in compatibility mode.
They've probably changed something with 7's explorer, and since microsoft just builds on top of old windows, the error will persist on 8 and 8.1's explorer.

Windows explorers need some other files to work such as dll and so on, and it's better if they are directly in Windows folder! (so they have the optimal configuration to hope to work, because they are in the same root than on the old windows and they have access to the most of files they may need!)
I once managed to run Windows 7 build 6801's explorer in Windows 10 build 1703 (way back in 2017), and the start menu and desktop didn't work, but I got XP/Vista style open programs in taskbar and a Windows 7 style system tray menu (but the "Customize" button didn't work"). I tried so in Windows 11 also, but then explorer crashes

Can you do old windows themes in new windows next? I believe they are incomptible so you have to copy thr textures using something like mssyteseditor and then you must patch them for them to work using SecureUxThemePatcher
Some start buttons dont work because of the updated start menu, so some of the explorers get confused and dont open the start menu (i think), also, immediately make sure that you fix any corrupted file.

Sorry to disappoint you, but since Windows 7, you start the respective Explorer of the old version, but the command is redirected to your "new" Explorer from the main system. You can see that pretty quickly at 13:00 or is this Windows 7 Explorer from a secret Windows 7 beta that I don't know about, where Explorer already has ribbon bars and Windows 8 icons? This is the same method used to redirect alternate MediaPlayer "mplayer2" to Windows Media Player when open. This is also used with write.exe, it redirects to wordpad.

It's not possible because newer versions of Windows Explorers will guaranteed use newer APIs, because Microsoft wants to show off their new features through Windows Explorer. And the older versions would simply make it crash because it is calling an API that doesn't exist

And no, Win7 and above of course they didn't start in shell mode... it needs to be registered as shell in the Registry first! HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell and change the path to the other Explorer then run userinit otherwise it will run the same Win10 explorer that ran in the video

I think you confused an explorer with another explorer with Windows 8.1, unless you can provide evidence that it's the right files.

ik.. this was only a test, and the explorers aren't downloaded from the internet.. it was grabed from iso files, so, the explorers are working fine

And no, Win7 and above of course they didn't start in shell mode... it needs to be registered as shell in the Registry first! HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell and change the path to the other Explorer then run userinit otherwise it will run the same Win10 explorer that ran in the video

he got explorers from the internet or from virtual machine (if you want explorers you must install the specifics windows on Virtual machine or screach it on internet)
