The great British passion for railways is Alive and kicking. Love these elegant, tall birches, the ancient oaks and even the fir plantations lining this stunning Rail line. Congratulations
You can travel by Bus Boat and Aeroplane yet my favourite way too travel is always the Train this video is Wonderful You can watch it and it makes you feel good yeah thanks for posting
Railways are just fantastic (anyrning on rails because I quite like trams too) and there is just something so relaxing about them. I am glad you enjoyed watching this, I definitely enjoyed filming it 🙂
Stones harvesting in the field will be good with plenty of rain, that´s why grass is so green. Impressive railway with a track as smooth as silk. Thanks for sharing with us that little paradise full of explanations. Good work !
You are most welcome, I had the best day ever filming. It was boxing day when I filmed this and most people would have rather been in front of the TV, but I couldn't think of anything I would rather do or anywhere I woild rather be 🙂
I was worried about going up on boxing day, the weather could have ruined filming. But I was so lucky and it just looks spectacular. I do hope to go back in summer and see just how different it looks
Had a footplate ride 1981, think the drivers name was George, grand memory! Also had a footplate ride on the R and E loco at Liverpool GardenFestival, same driver as I recall. Lovely times!
This was my first visit but I have already booked a little cottage up there to take the wife and daughter, these are the kind of railways that make memories!
Over 40 years ago I drove a minibus full of kids to Ravenglass but was then told to pick them up at Dalegarth. I was disappointed not to ride on La'al Ratty but now I had the best 'seat' on the train. Many thanks for a superb video through beautiful Cumbria.
You are more than welcome, and I can definitely imagine how frustrating that would have been, especially as I can picture the kids talking about it the whole way back!
What a great video brilliant camera work from aboard this train such a shame no body in northern ireland could have done the same here 2 chronical the rail industry in by gone days from belfast northern ireland
Thank you for your kind words, I do hope to get around all railways eventually just in case any more do sadly go. At least we could then look back on videos like this.
What this is, folks, is a salutary lesson to not let your locos, carriages and rail lines stay too long in the wash cycle, or they end up shrinking on you! 😁
Very nice ride. Great train and description at top. I almost felt I was viewing a train cam on the ultimate garden RR in HO (your 00) gauge. Thank you for the upload. USA. I liked and subbed.
Really must try and visit La’al Ratty at some point, it is one of the best Miniature lines in the UK possibly even the world, and one I should really visit for myself, not had chance yet in my 39 years of life, hope to get there soon. Great video that shows just how impressive the engineering on this line was, and how nice the locos sound when working, thank you. Dale W. (Appropriate name for a video from the Dales 😉 )
Hi Dale (I agree, very appropriate name), this was my first visit, at 33 years old. I definitely wish I had made it up sooner as it really was spectacular. The video is great, but nothing would compare with being there, although I did film this on boxing day and did wish for at least 2 extra layers, it was nippy!
I suppose everyone can tell those double walls used to be canals for boats. Took me a minute. Lot of work went into that project. Back in the day of moving goods on rafts.
Many happy days on the railway used to camp at boot not be up there for a good few years people used to go with sadly no more and don’t have a car so it’s just lovely memories
Hi Brian, I am sorry to hear you can't make it up these days. I can imagine without a car it is very difficult, the Lake District being remote can be a good and bad thing. I know videos can never replace being there, but I hope this brought back some lovely memories of the railway and of course the people you used to visit with 🙂
Can someone please explain to me, at 20:32 it appears as though the points the train is going through are set for the other track? Then, it appears as though it's perhaps the train wheels themselves that force the points to change? I would have thought those points would already have been pre-set for the train joining from the track it's entering from. Can those with lots more knowledge of these things please explain what I'm seeing at that point, if you'll pardon the pun :) Great video.
I have to admit, that is definitely not my area of expertise. However this page is followed by a lot of very clever people and somebody will be along with an answer soon 😁
The switch is a SPRING SWITCH. The red "S" sign visible on the left at 20:25 probably indicates that, although I'm not completely sure of British RR signage. Just as the engine passes over the switch points, one can see in the video, the points move due to the engines' wheels forcing the points over to align with the active (left hand) track. A spring switch allows a train to go through without the need to stop and manually change the points, as long as it's understood which track is the default routing when a train is coming the opposite direction. These are used occasionally in the US also.
I drove over Corney Pass on the way over, thought it was spectacular until I hit the snow at the very top. Would have happily had 2 wheels for the day up until that point, suddenly thankful that I had 4. Fantastic area of the world, impressive in every weather!
From somebody that was last up there on boxing day, June sounds lovely...and warm 😂 I am hoping to make it back in summer myself to film, the line looks totally different in winter and summer so I want both versions ideally
First visited the Ratty in 1960 and have loved it ever since. Sad to see that for a third year, the lines intermediate stations/halts remain closed and special booking arrangements still apply. Are the screens on the open stock being retained? How can this still be necessary/justified? Isn't it time to return to normal?
It is a tricky subject and one I am sure many railways have discussed at length. They did have restrictions when I filmed this on boxing day, but I never really felt like they detracted from my day. Railways do tend to attract an older audience (over 50% of my viewers on TH-cam are 65+) and with age does sometimes come risks. As for the stations being closed, from a purely selfish point of view it made for a much better flowing video as it was a straight run. I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to your point but it is always great to hear all sides of an argument.
Sorry I replied off the wrong account this morning half asleep. It was filmed on a GoPro 10 that does pick up colours well and it was on a cold crisp perfectly clear boxing day which helped too. I couldn't have asked for better conditions
What’s the situation now with the Ratty? I heard recently a serious landslide had taken out about half a mile of track near Rock Point. Any chance of it being fixed by Easter?
@@TheTouristLine Ah right. It can’t have been as bad as I thought it was. Are they stopping at all the intermediate stations now cos the last two times I’ve been you could only do end-to-end; which was pretty annoying.
It is one of the best looked after railways I have ever visited. I got there early in the morning to set my cameras up and they was picking every single leaf out of the open carriages one at a time to make sure everything was perfect before people arrived, that level of detail was replicated in every aspect of the railway, from cleanliness to maintenence
I am sorry that you don't like the adverts. I spent over £3000 in fuel, equipment and tickets last year and the adverts managed to bring a fraction of that back, meaning I can just about do more this year. Without the adverts I wouldn't get to half the places and wouldn't even be in a position to make these videos at all sadly. TH-cam do offer an advert free premium account for anybody not wanting to view them, but content and equipment sadly does cost money.
@@TheTouristLine It isn't the adverts in themselves I don't like. If they appeared at beginning and end, or if the interval between them was longer, or if there was a notice (as, for example, on the Sam's Trains channel "Advert in 5"), then I'd be a lot happier.
@@caroleast9636 premium subscribers don't see any adverts, it is really good value for people that use TH-cam a lot. On my private account I have premium because I use TH-cam more than things like Netflix
Because this was filmed at 60 frames per second, you can go to the settings at the bottom right of the screen and it can be played at half speed but still look great 👍
It seems fast probably because the camera is low down and close to the track. From the perspective of a passenger in a coach it’s really just a steady cruise. This is a great little railway run by a bunch of nice friendly people and I’ve always enjoyed every visit. Unfortunately it’s about 300 miles away from home and too far for a day trip.
The great British passion for railways is Alive and kicking. Love these elegant, tall birches, the ancient oaks and even the fir plantations lining this stunning Rail line. Congratulations
It really is one of the most stunning railways in Britain, probably matched but not beaten by any other.
Very cool video.. interesting small gauge track.. 😊
One of my all time favourites!
Great memories! I rode on this train several times in the late fifties during summer holidays. Seems it hasn't changed much. Thank you.
