  • Step into the heart of steam rail travel as we embark on a mesmerizing autumn journey through the breathtaking landscapes of the Lake District on the historic Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. Join us on a unique adventure aboard the magnificent River Irt, and experience the magic from not one, but two perspectives - one behind the skilled driver, Sam, and the other right at the front of the locomotive.
🛤️ *About the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway:*
The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, affectionately known as La'al Ratty, is a living testament to railway history. Established in 1875, it winds its way through some of the most picturesque scenery in the Lake District National Park. Our journey commences in Ravenglass, the sole coastal village in the national park, and carries us on a captivating ride through valleys and woodlands to the destination of Dalegarth.
    🚂 *Meet River Irt:*
Our locomotive for this remarkable journey is the illustrious River Irt, a name that pays homage to one of the Lake District's scenic rivers. This locomotive stands as a testament to Victorian engineering and is a cherished part of the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway's historic collection. Discover the storied past of this locomotive and its integral role in preserving the legacy of narrow-gauge steam rail travel.
    🍂 *Autumn's Radiant Palette:*
As we traverse the Lake District during the autumn season, you'll be treated to a visual feast of vibrant fall foliage, golden hues, and serene landscapes. The crystal-clear 4K UHD footage beautifully captures the essence of this season's splendor, making it an ideal escape for nature lovers and rail enthusiasts alike.
    👨‍🔧 *Witness Sam in Action:*
Gain exclusive access to the intricacies of steam locomotive operation as you watch Sam, our seasoned driver, expertly navigate River Irt through twists and turns. It's an insider's look into the world of steam rail travel.
    👀 *Dual Perspectives:*
Experience the journey from two captivating angles - one from the driver's seat with Sam and the other right at the front of the locomotive. These unique vantage points provide an unparalleled view of both the railway's operation and the stunning landscapes it traverses.
🎶 *Sounds of Steam and Nature:*
Immerse yourself in the evocative sounds of steam, the rhythmic click-clack of the wheels on the tracks, and the serenade of the Lake District's natural symphony. It's an auditory journey that complements the breathtaking visuals.

Of course this trip was on the equally spectacular River Irt, River Irt was originally built as a tank engine (and named Muriel) by Sir Arthur Heywood in 1894. It is believed she saw service at the munitions factory in Gretna (as 0-8-0T Muriel) before arriving at Ravenglass in 1917. She was rebuilt as a tender engine ( and renamed ) in 1927. 1972 saw her gain the current profile. River Irt is the oldest working 15-inch gauge locomotive in the world but she still hauls heavy trains capably even though she is now over 100 years old.
Ravenglass and Eskdale railway operate throughout the year and run a number of special days too. It is worth visiting as the line is just spectacular, so is the lake district setting and especially the mountains surrounding the railway. Tickets are really good value and there is plenty to do.

Mmm 😌 Railroading is just really neat and fascinating to enjoy. What would I give to trade my job as a part-time package handler at a UPS for a cool job working as a full-time railroader. Now I can definitely see why Wilbert Awdry put this exact railway as an illustrated part of his book stories of "The Railway Series." I certainly wouldn't mind taking nice train rides to clear my mind.

As great as this appears, it's still hard work. I did it for 20 years as a revenue conductor and that was easy compared to a freight railroad.

I am on the fence about captions, I started putting them on at the start then people said they got in the way, so I left them off and now people say they should be on. I have started putting a few on as subtitles (meaning they can be turned on or off and we are all happy) but I need to go back to some older ones and fill them in.
