That is very noble of you and I support this initiative, although I am surprised they don't make such big profits so as not to rely on donations. For comparison, the ride up the Brienzer Rothorn costs nearly 100 Swiss Francs per person and at least in summer the trains are pretty full. For me at least, as an Eastern European, this ride was extremely expensive. I am pretty sure the Rothornbahn gets to cover all the costs associated with running steam engines and make a good profit too.
@@wyqtor That is expensive! I can't speak for the Rothornbahn, I just know this organisation is a non profit one, made up of mostly volunteers, some who travel from different countries to help. Their annual maintenance costs are around 700'000.- and they have to comply with certain laws with crossings etc, which add to the cost. I guess on top of that come the running costs (Diesel, coal, locomotive repairs, rental) which are likely to be covered by the guests. They also have a lot to do before and after winter, removing traffic lights and anything else that could get damaged by avalanches. They have around 35'000 guests per year, according to the internet.
Another fantastic engineering effort from our pioneers in railway building in the alps. Always astonishing what these people where able to build at the second half of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Thank you for this nice ride over the Furka Pass. What a luxury in these hyper-fast days to travel at such a low and easy speed. I enjoyed it a lot. Kind regards and may you always have safe travels. Also a big shout-out to the maintainers and supporters of the track and the trains. Great job.

As a retired truck driver (USA), I know there's a lot more hard work than what you see here. Driving jobs just come with hard work. But I've travelled by train through so much of that lovely country. If I could turn back time, I'd love to operate one of the many trains running through Switzerland. Wonderful video. Thank you.
Fantastic video of one of the World's most stunning lines. I've hiked both ends as far as the tunnel mouths. The hike from Realp to Furka was undertaken in October 2020 about one week after the line had closed for the season. Already it had suffered from landslips and huge boulders falling on the line! Once 2000m was attained, there was snow everywhere. An unforgettable experience!
I love the details you provide ... the maps, image of the actual train making the journey, informative notes ... and the views were extraordinary! Great job!
A few weeks ago, on September 5, 2021 I was there by car. I drove over the Grimsel Pass to the right to the Oberwald, then back the whole Furka Pass to Realp. I think, along with Grimsel, they are some of the most beautiful passes in Switzerland. Certainly much nicer than the fashionable and well known Gothard Pass :) When I found this video, I was happy to see my favorite road from a different perspective - when I met it in the past, I knew I had to come back here. I also traveled through the tunnel under the Furka on a previous visit to Switzerland. Thank you very much !!!!

Schöne Erinnerungen - herzlichen Dank an alle! Liebe Grüsse - Remo
There are plenty of closed railways in other countries that have been turned into cycling ways or hiking tracks where that is possible. Unfortunately there have been casualties from foreigners thinking they could do that in Switzerland.

I am from Hungary and I am appreciated for the uploads. I love those beautiful landscape all around Switzerland especially the mountain regions. i hope one day I could personally visit these places. I am looking forward for more videos, especially about winter time. Thank You.
Toll, nach 40 Jahren, nachdem ich diese Strecke noch mit der F.O. fahren konnte, zu sehen, was die DFO mit Hilfe vieler Fronarbeiter dort geleistet hat und immer noch leistet!
Wow this is incredible! Thank you Lori and Paolo for this awesome video. This rack railway is really terrific and more so thanks to the great work of many volunteers who help to keep it running. Thank you both for sharing this with all of us. I look forward to more great trips.
Very nice cab ride. The landscapes of FURKA are splendid, obviously with the sun is better. At a certain moment, I wondered if it wasn't in Scotland, saw the landscape and the low clouds that hid the peaks, but no, it was just a mirage.Very nice view, from Gletsch of the summits at the end of the valley. Finally congratulations for this video and your endeavour.
Lieber Paolo, liebe DFB, danke für das Video. Das ist meine absolute Favoritendiesellok auf schmaler Spur. Ich hoffe, die wird erhalten bleiben. The Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway from Manitou Springs up Pikes Peak in Colorado, USA has just reopened from replacing all of the track which was laid in 1891 with the Abt System, new trains from Swiss Locomotive, and a new depot. They spent about 2 years rebuilding the railroad. The maximum grade is 25%. The other cog railroad in the US is the Mt. Washington Cog Railroad in New Hampshire which is the first mountain-climbing cog railroad in the world.
Yes a great railway and a great road over the pass itself. I've ridden my bicycle over several times in both directions on my way from Nice to Graz. Love the place. There's a great eatery at Gletsch. It's tragic that the glacier is disappearing fast, we don't take care of the planet anywhere near well enough.

Yeah, I was quite surprised when I arrived at Eigergletscher station on the Jungfraubahn earlier this year, because on my first trip as a child I distinctly remembered a glacier going all the way down from the sides of the mountain into a valley just below, to the point where I thought my mind was playing tricks on me. Unfortunately it wasn't. And to think this glacier we see here in the video, the Rhone glacier, used to go nearly all the way down to Gletsch early last century!
