  • The line we're looking at today used to be the heart of the Furka Oberalp railway (FO), a narrow gauge rack railway connecting the SBB station of Brig in the canton of Wallis with the RhB network in Disentis/Mustér, with a branch line connecting to Göschenen of the Gotthard railway.
    Construction of the line started in 1911. As a result of World War I, funds and workers were no longer available, putting a stop to progress. In 1926, the rest of the line was finally finished.
    Due large amounts of snow and the danger of avalanches, the line had to be closed through winter months. This included removing catenary wires and other pieces of infrastructure prone to damage, closing the tunnels and even folding a specially designed bridge down into the valley. The viaduct which once stood in its place was destroyed by an avalanche in 1916 before a train even got to drive on it.
    The high costs involved with this procedure, as well as the inconvenience of the line being divided for 5 to 6 months of the year led to the development of the Furka base tunnel. This was completed in 1982, upon which the mountain pass was decommissioned and planned to be removed.
    Thankfully, railway fans formed an association, aiming to preserve the line, which they were successful in. Finally by 2010, the line had been restored to the extent that trains could once again travel all the way from Realp to Oberwald.

    All donations during the Premier will go to the Furka Bergstrecke association, for the upkeep of this wonderful railway.

      @wyqtor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That is very noble of you and I support this initiative, although I am surprised they don't make such big profits so as not to rely on donations. For comparison, the ride up the Brienzer Rothorn costs nearly 100 Swiss Francs per person and at least in summer the trains are pretty full. For me at least, as an Eastern European, this ride was extremely expensive. I am pretty sure the Rothornbahn gets to cover all the costs associated with running steam engines and make a good profit too.

    • @lorirocks777
      @lorirocks777  3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@wyqtor That is expensive! I can't speak for the Rothornbahn, I just know this organisation is a non profit one, made up of mostly volunteers, some who travel from different countries to help.
      Their annual maintenance costs are around 700'000.- and they have to comply with certain laws with crossings etc, which add to the cost. I guess on top of that come the running costs (Diesel, coal, locomotive repairs, rental) which are likely to be covered by the guests. They also have a lot to do before and after winter, removing traffic lights and anything else that could get damaged by avalanches.
      They have around 35'000 guests per year, according to the internet.

    Fantastic video of one of the World's most stunning lines. I've hiked both ends as far as the tunnel mouths. The hike from Realp to Furka was undertaken in October 2020 about one week after the line had closed for the season. Already it had suffered from landslips and huge boulders falling on the line! Once 2000m was attained, there was snow everywhere. An unforgettable experience!

    A few weeks ago, on September 5, 2021 I was there by car. I drove over the Grimsel Pass to the right to the Oberwald, then back the whole Furka Pass to Realp. I think, along with Grimsel, they are some of the most beautiful passes in Switzerland.
    Certainly much nicer than the fashionable and well known Gothard Pass :)
    When I found this video, I was happy to see my favorite road from a different perspective - when I met it in the past, I knew I had to come back here.
    I also traveled through the tunnel under the Furka on a previous visit to Switzerland.
    Thank you very much !!!!

      The Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway from Manitou Springs up Pikes Peak in Colorado, USA has just reopened from replacing all of the track which was laid in 1891 with the Abt System, new trains from Swiss Locomotive, and a new depot. They spent about 2 years rebuilding the railroad. The maximum grade is 25%.
      The other cog railroad in the US is the Mt. Washington Cog Railroad in New Hampshire which is the first mountain-climbing cog railroad in the world.

    7:29 To the left of center, Paolo appears like a spectral apparition.
    48:30 Can honestly say, have never seen nor heard of a water column equipped with a signal lamp here in the United States.
    51:46 Neat. A tunnel portal located in the center of a highway's hairpin curve. Another first.
    55:01 Freshet on the right.
    56:04 A pair of ghostly reminders of catenary days.
    Do I understand correctly, lorirocks, that all those traffic signals controlling the grade crossings are put up at the start of every operating season and then taken down after the line closes for the year? That's a lot of work. Kudos to the volunteers.
    Thanks, Paolo, for taking the time to film this (I'm quite certain there was a lot of arm twisting--by YOU to get in that cab!) and to you, lorirocks, for posting it. Very enjoyable. Now, off to Google Earth to scope out this route.

    To curious people: The water of the stream we see at the beginning (Realp to Furka) finally reaches the sea at Amsterdam Holland. River Rein.
    The water on the other stream (Furka to Obervald) reaches the Mediterranean Sea at Marseille France. River Rohn.
    Imagine to be two drops of water of the same cloud and finally to be at two different places of the world 🤣

    Lovely video of this unique railway line, thanks for taking us on one of the few unelectrified lines in Switzerland. Though it was quite odd to see just 2 catenary poles at about the 56th minute of the video. Why have they kept those 2 poles? Any particular reason? Thanks for this, and hope to see many more such routes.

    Auf einer Busreise in die Schweiz, parkten wir mit unserem Bus auf der Rückfahrt, hoch über Gletsch.
    Ich habe eine Dampfwolke entdeckt und unseren Busfahrer gebeten, zu warten. Das war die beste Entscheidung, denn alle Beteiligten bekamen die Ankunft des Dampfzugs in Gletsch mit.
    Herzlichen Dank!

    Yo créo que hay lugares donde se puede andar a más de 20 Km/hr, no hay wue ser tan exajerado, pero bonito el viaje de montaña. 👍🇨🇱

      Puede ser pero el problema es que la manutencion es minimal porqué costa mucho dinero. Ir para bajo creo que no se puede ir mucho mas veloce. Para arriba capaz que se podría mas veloce (30-35 km/h).
