- Press conference with England manager Gareth Southgate and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford ahead of their Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland in Dusseldorf.
Southgate talks about Jude Bellingham receiving a suspended ban and fine for a crotch grabbing gesture made after scoring against Slovakia, says at this point he’s not on reaching 100 matches, whether he’ll make changes to get the best out of Phil Foden, says that every team wants to be exciting and play well and the team are looking capable of doing that, says Switzerland have been excellent and are causing other teams a lot of problems and it’s not fair to compare the two teams based purely on market value, whether he plans to change the system for the Switzerland game and the merits of doing so, whether he has any advice for Keir Starmer and what he considers the harder job, the importance if substitutions and whether he’s given thought to making changes either from the start or changing things earlier during matches, the effect of speculation around his job, why he thinks the players are looking better in training in the past week - saying there are a number of reasons, says talk of an easy route to the final shows arrogance and that’s half the problem the nation faces and whether Luke Shaw is fit to start and how much a risk that would be having not played a game in four months - highlighting how good Kieran Trippier has been in his absence.
Pickford says he doesn’t feel he’ll need to talk to Bellingham about his behaviour, says every player needs to step up to make sure the side see off the Swiss, what he thinks the impact of losing Marc Guehi to suspension will be, the challenge of finding their identity on the pitch, how he sees the difference between playing with three or four at the back, reaching seven Euros clean sheets which puts in him line with some of the worlds greats and why he think he adapts so well to tournament football m, saying he’s prepare for a shoot out but would rather win it in 90 mins.

I’ve been Southgate out for quite a long time now, but I really admire his strength & ability to face the media & speak so well, so calm when he has had enormous amounts of pressure & at times, abuse from fans all over the country.

We are going out. In his heart he knows Palmer should be starting instead of Foden. Foden plays in a structured system with the best players in the world. He won player of the year. Unfortunately there is no structure or system of play and that is why Palmer. He played for one of the most dysfunctional teams in the world in Chelsea and succeeded. It's unbelievable! Gordon should start as well as he has pace. Those 2 almost single handedly won the U21 championship not that long ago. 2 or 3 nil to the Swiss! I so hope I'm proven wrong 😢

it depends on the system being played. i do agree the lack of system has muted fodens abilities. But if shaw is truly avilable to play today that could actually be a possitive for foden if hes on the left. unless SG brings bellingham back abit and puts foden in the 10 position. If shaw is playing we would also have a very well rounded back 3 with shaw, stones and walker (although walker hasnt been the best). Without shaw the opposition have exploited our weakest left side pushing more defensively on teh right with saka and walker making it really hard to push through and when palmer played sure he was better but he also struggled to get into the game becuase our left was weak. Imo today we need shaw and gordon on the left, saka or palmer on the right. The new balance should make it easier for the left side to get through now HOPEFULLY. But also swiss are more fluid which means they will open pockets we can exploit, the other teams we played where happy with draws meaning they could sit deep and be happy about it which is why england has looked so boring. I think tonight england will play differently becuase at the end of the day they train to beat teams like the swiss, french, spanish etc.

Tripier has mostly been gash, giving the ball away, going backwards and hardly clearing the first man on corners/ free kicks. You don't have to say that GS, but don't tell us he's done a great job.
Gareth is a good man who loves his country and he will do his damndest to win but ! We must forget his timid and fearful attitude. Play 3 at back, no Trippier, 4 midfield, Trent Arnold, Rice, Bellingham and Gordon with Saka, Kane and Foden up front. Make teams worry about us ! We’ll run over them.

He's right about English players coming at a premium but he needs to start talking things up and being confident. Even the way he speaks is cautious and negative. We need someone to galvanize things, it will have to come from the players cause Southgate isn't that guy. He's done many good things, he just seems too meek. He needs to use his substitutions also.
