It’s crazy how Guatemala is often considered one of the most forgettable seasons when there’s so many theoretically notable things about it. Things like the first captain season, first hidden immunity idol, one of the toughest locations, one of the toughest challenges, first celebrity castaway, etc.

I like it when Jeff opens up the opportunity to drop in exchange for food, especially when an endurance challenge lasts over an hour and you realize that even if by some miracle you do win, the exhaustion will set you back every other challenge.
It might be even cooler if Jeff would offer a perk for the tribe that an individual has to sacrifice their chance at immunity for, say, a tarp or extra rice. Gives you a pseudo-immunity due to doing a kind thing for everyone and only a villain would vote for you.

There's a VERY rich history in Survivor of people doing kind things and everyone targeting them for it because they see it as jury management and that they are now a bigger target to win because people like them more. That and/or they see the gesture as phoney. The only reason more people don't get voted out after something like that is because others tell them they need to do damage control immediately. But there are definitely instances of them immediately getting voted out, and it is basically always at the very least discussed. I'm pretty sure the only time it isn't immediately discussed is when Carter got the bag of rice at the auction in Philippines, and even then it was discussed in the next episode under the guise of him being a big 'jury threat.' Honestly, it's a lose-lose with almost no upsides to be in those situations. You're either kind and people think you're a threat and target you, or you're selfish and people are upset with you and target you. Being hit with one of these decisions is a punishment, not an opportunity like it's perceived.

FYI, the camp they were competing for in Guatemala was actually the WORSE camp according to everyone who lived at both that season. It's water supply was much farther from camp, and as shown with the "pool" reward the body of water at it was much nicer (i.e. the pool was on a "deck" at the loser camp, while at the other camp the water was such a swampy mess that they had to put it in the middle of the water and make them row out to the pool in a boat).

Honestly, my first thought watching this was to convince your tribe (after the other tribe has already left for the hike of course) that not completing the hike and wasting the enormous amount of energy would be the best idea. Not to mention the dangers of hiking through the jungle (dehydration, injury, insect bites, etc). Let the other team risk themselves and have your team stay back, rest up, eat something and begin setting up camp. Massive advantage in my mind.

A tale of two stories: For Palau, Jeff claimed Tom made a fuss over the smoke but Tom spoke out about it and said it was because at one point Jeff told them the 'new' rule was they had to stand on one foot and Tom threatened legal action as that was not stipulated in the rules. To me, the changing of the rule to one foot vs the smoke would be the bigger reason they didn't change the comp. Tom even spoke himself how he threatened legal action if they changed the rules because as a game show (technically) despite very little controls of the players, some comps rules at least at the time must have made that sort of change in rules not kosher.
Either way, a tale of why Palau didn't end up changing course -- one from Jeff claiming re smoke from fires vs Tom (who competing in it) saying on RHAP it was because Jeff told them one leg only which violated the rules of the comp the players were told.
Fun and interesting side note to your amazing video!

Wow, Tom sounds more like a lawyer than a fireman (wasn't that his job). I'm impressed that he stood up for himself. But it also helps it was the last challenge. It's not like Survivor could change the next challenge to hinder Tom's ability to question the rules.

i am curious of the contracts they signed before entering the show, if this was the first time this sort of threat was ever uttered, it was definitely in the next contract and everyone after that, that associated challenge rules can be changed at any time by producers for whatever reason they deem necessary... I'm still going to assume this was in the contracts anyway that it could be changed, but they didn't want the associated negative publicity and decided however long the challenge took compared to the months of court proceedings, it was an easy decision... if the rule change benefitted one player over the other, like one had a sore leg that was previously known, it would still be grounds for legal action, curious if age would be a factor there...

It’s not even that hard, assuming this was near the beginning being the first challenge. I went on a hike in Tasmania and one of the days was 27km with 5000 meters elevation whilst carrying a 26kg pack. So a little longer in distance than 11 miles but i guess I didn’t have to clear the track it was already open.

What's crazy about the Uncomfortably Numb challenge lasting so long is that in SJDS, which was an earlier season, Jeff offered food to step down, but didn't during DvG. I'm not sure why; maybe they thought it was too easy during the earlier run.
Edit: Looking back, he did offer food on DvG, but it was to sit out entirely.

The part in Micronesia when a bunch of adult women cross their fingers in order to lie to Jason like they're f**king nine-year-olds on a school playground is lowkey the cringiest moment ever.

    • @roger_towny_jr
      @roger_towny_jr ปีที่แล้ว

@Ana Pie That's not true, because the plan to blindside Ozzie didn't take shape until after they got to camp. They legitimately planned to lie to Jason's face and vote him out that night.

Really don't count the lost one among the longest challenge the same way as the long time tasks were counted out.
It was brutal. More so than the producers intended. But it was task. With even nigh pause. Still crazy, not something that even half of the people could handle.
But it's very different than a non-stop challenge such as the true number one from Palau
