Fleming sang Verdi's requiem several times in the middle of her career, and is here captured in concert with Levine. She is in glorious voice, her instrument fully commensurate with the extreme demands that Verdi places on the soloist, from the fearful dramatic outbursts to the eerily calm lyricism and glistening floated high Bb of the Requiem Aeternam (starting 4:30). There is another live performance on youtube from 2001 with Pappano at the Barbican hall, filmed the day her voice teacher (Beverley Peck Johnson) had died.
Fleming's year 2000 studio recording with Gergiev is even more fiercely dramatic than in this reading, in line with Gergiev's high drama vision of the work. I highly recommend listening to that recording too. But this remains a superb live account of the final movement of Verdi's masterpiece. Enjoy!

La Fleming ha questa parte appiccicata. Verdi sembra abbia scritto la parte pensando a questa voce. Per me la Fleming qua è inarrivabile come colore e timbro di voce.

Ran here after watching the disaster Met 9/11 requiem on PBS. Ailyn Perez is a beautiful woman with a fine voice that should NEVER sing Verdi. When will the Met discover that Verdi requires chest voice?! Viva La Diva Renee!
Leontyne Price has a wonderful voice, but I have to say Renee has more flexibility in her voice and music making. But I have to go with Karajan over Levine. Both are extremely musical in different way as a conductor.
Just watched this whole concert and I am emotionally and mentaly drained. Sooo emmensely glorious❣️🎶❣️As you mentioned the Pappano concert I also watched that clip on youtube. It was just as glorious but in a different way. She knew the score and the nerve and expression came more from her own inner self. It reminded me of her potrayal of Blanche Dubois. We know why this is but I was chocked anyway. I actually had put off watching that clip because I knew the background and was affraid it might not be all that good. But WOW was I wrong and so thankful you gave me the nerve to watch it. What a night.🎶🎶❣️🎶🎶

Of course it could be better but the copy I got was quite satisfying.😊 I am ordering the Gergiev recording tomorrow. Can’t get enough of Verdi and if this was an opera it would be The BEST opera ever!😍
Agreed. I want to stage it one day actually. Enjoy the Gergiev! You'll love the mezzo too, and Gergiev's approach is thrilling.

Quando una voce lirica ha colore, espressività e duttilità può risolvere anche passi dove sarebbe richiesto maggiore spessore drammatico. Ma la bella Renee, diciamolo, ha avuto un intelligenza musicale superiore
