    I saw her perform this at the Proms in 2004/5? Sometime around then. It was my first time seeing her... it’s on here somewhere too. I was just a few feet away and that voice rang out in that vast space like she was born to sing there. She followed it up with Four Last Songs in the second half. One of my most treasured memories of music performances and the first of a handful of times seeing her perform. Seeing her as Desdemona at The Met from 4th row was also a treat I was not expecting... such a remarkable voice. Thanks for uploading and sharing all this!

      Thank you for your comment. I have many, many rare live recordings of Fleming on this channel, so please do check them out! The Proms performance was 2001 and is on youtube if you want to relive the moment. The four last songs in particular are very movingly sung (also on youtube if you search Four last Songs Fleming Proms).

    From the three here on youtube I think this must be THE most thrilling one. The full rich voice body - sorry for not having a more explicit vocabulary - all the way down and up is just AMAZING!!!

      Agree 100%: 1997-1999 her most miraculous years of all, and this is her greatest live performance of this piece.

    Wow! what a difference one recording can make from another of the same piece. I have just listened to several recordings of Exultate Jubilate, all recorded by Renee Fleming. Of course she made them with different orchestras and conductors. One of them, I don't remember who the conductor or orchestra were, but I was very disapointed with one where Fleming slurs up to notes and badly prounces the text. Also excess interpolation of cadenzas as if singing Rossini, Bellini or other composers of the Bel Canto period. However in this recording Fleming is at her vocal best and the performance is wonderful.

    Full voiced Mozartian singing. It always infuriates me how much Mozart is reduced to anaemic singing by the lightest of voices. Mozart wrote for a full range and sufficient weight, just like Rossini.

    • @greatmomentsofopera7170
      @greatmomentsofopera7170  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Pretty thrilling isn't it? You're right in saying that Mozart reduced - you almost don't hear the music properly if there's not enough of a sound. That doesn't mean it has to be a big voice of course - just well produced (in all registers). Lucia Popp is an example of a superb Mozartian with a light voice, but incredible resonance and support in every register. It is rare that someone can do both the coloratura in this piece and deliver a proper tone though... Fleming, Baker and Schwarzkopf... few others. They were all masters of legato too, and all three had a superb trill. But to make it actually sound joyous and celebratory and grateful for life? i.e. express the text via the musical means...I've not heard it elsewhere with all the other things in place too.

      Great moments of opera Yes, the foundation of most of Mozart's music is a full, well projected and supported lyric voice with coherent registers. Most singers sing Mozart like a ghost, with a translucent quality that doesn't express any of the life and depth Mozart imbued into his music.
      I adore Fleming in Mozart. Always such an incredibly clean line and her timbre is accentuated to its most beautiful (along with Strauss).

    I dont think Mozart ever wrote anythning more dull than this yet from her mouth only, it sounds as if Heavens opened and angels are singing... and with a low / chest register unheard before in such pieces

    • @greatmomentsofopera7170

      It's such a fun version, actually truly joyous for once, and the timbre is so astonishingly full and beautiful, including into that glorious chest voice as you say.
