Love those old Powerhouse Ponchos.... MY mom had a 66 Catalina wagon with a rare 389 All Fuel Engine option. Her wagon tied a 69 Chevelle SS 396 4 spd in the 1/4 mile street racing it up here. then my brother had the Classy one. He had a 65 Bonneville Convertible with .... yup you guessed it .. the 421 4 spd and 8 lug Bud wheels. Red paint with a white leather bucket seat interior. Wish I had those 2 today.

Right, the car is wearing 8 lugs. Hoever, the build sheet called for code 462-P01 Wheel Discs Deluxe. Perhaps the ride & handling package superseded the order for the caps. We weren't clear in the video, but we know it's got the 8 lugs.
When I was a kid my dad owned the 2+2 version of this car, it didn't say Catalina anywhere. He ordered it to his liking; it was a bright yellow with black interior and absolutely no power anything incl. steering. It had an automatic but the same engine, carb and 411 gearing. The doors were massive (got my fingers in them once) and the car was big and heavy but it would MOVE. He sold it in the 80's and regretted it ever since til the day he passed.
Mom said "we need a family car." Dad was thinking 'I'm not ready for a station wagon, I want a muscle car. Hhhhmn, what an I buy?' " Hey hon, how bout we get a nice 4 door and let me pick out the options. After all, I do know about engines and such."
The video incorrectly stated that it had steel wheels with wheel covers. The wheels are aluminum are actually part of the factory optional heavy duty brakes. You can clearly see they are finned aluminum for heat dissipation and not steel. The brake drums were built into the finned aluminum wheels for increased cooling and stopping power. One of the most unique performance options of the day and totally missed by the video. These were only available on Pontiac full-size cars of the early to mid-sixties. They also failed to mention (most likely didn't know) that there was still a higher horsepower engine available called the 421 SD (Super Duty). Which actually put the full-size car above a tri-power GTO in acceleration and 1/4 mile performance. The 421 SD had a forged crank, forged pistons, forged rods, McKeller mechanical lifter camshaft, cast aluminum exhaust headers with factory exhaust cutouts, etc., etc.. Came in both a single and dual quad carburetors on a factory tunnel ram manifold configurations. It has been claimed that the SD engines actually produced nearly 500hp. 60's Catalinas, Impalas, Satalites, and Galaxies all had their version of this and were all great muscle machines. Remember the 63 Ford Galaxie with the 427/ 4speed? Nothing better than a full size car with a oversized engine and a 4 speed mixer. Best of both worlds!
In 1973 my uncle died and my aunt sold me his car. It was a 66 4 door Ventura The air cleaner said 389 and it had a 4 barrel and dual exhaust. with I think new for that year the 3 speed automatic. My uncle was always shall we say in the gray areas of the law. When I had it inspected the Mechanic said some things were different then other Catilinas and Venturas he had worked on so curious he checked some things. The rear springs were from a station wagon. The rear was the heavier 12 bolt so he checked and yes even if it had the breather from the 389 it was a 421. Sure had fun surprising my friends.
4 door cars back then was a more stonger or rigid platform then a 2 door, so many of the big full-size 4 doors died in fierce battles in the ring of the " Demolition derby" , my brother has a a 65 Pontiac 2+2 with the 4 speed , can't wait to get it going and drive that beast.
Definitely in the muscle car category. I will take mine in Black please. This is for the individual who really wants too purchase a GTO, but has a family too carry around. Great marketing executives back then.

Beautiful car! I have a 1970 Catalina 2 dr. also in Polar White, I've had it since 1972. Cragar SS wheels are the only non stock parts. I've never gotten tired of looking at it even after 48 years!
I picked up and Cat in a field got it fired up and drove it home.1974 ,400 4 door hardtop. Nice two tone paint with 15 " Crager SS, gold pinstripes and gold Pontiac logo keyhole protectors. It's a beautiful beast and I love driving it. It's only been a four year love affair and I'm in for the long haul.
Neat old Pontiac. That 421 Engine set some early records too. Really helped to put Pontiac on the map before the GTO even existed. The Pontiac big blocks of the late 60s had their weak links a good machine shop will tell you to save your money before building one but seeing these as they came like this is always nice. Great one for the collection.
At one point in history ( and for many years until the 1990s ) the 1965 Pontiac Catalina 2+2 held the Road & Track record for fastest 0-60 time ever recorded for a factory car: 3.9 seconds. This was recorded when R&T tested this car against a Ferrari GTO, I think. I still have the original magazine.
I like to think some family man bought this beast. Maybe he walked into the show room in his 3 piece suit, Florsheim wing tops, and an Elgin or Bulova watch set to the correct time on his left wrist. He expected to buy a wagon but asked the salesman if he had something a tad hotter. Hah. Little did the missus know back at home. While she was whipping up some pigs in a blanket, a lime Jell-O mold, and a pitcher of instant milk for the kids, up drives dad with a huge grin on his face.
Find the original owner or kids and photos of dad or mom or both with car and add to vids...had to be cool couple.. With this spec package Everyone needs to shift a muncie at least once...
My Dad bought my Mom a 66 Bonneville station wagon, yes in 66 the high end station wagon was a Bonneville. It had the 421 three deuce, but I don't know if it was an HO. The station wagons had single exhaust because of the placement of the spare and fuel tanks being behind each rear fenders. The exhaust system was bigger in diameter to help compensate.
The 65 Catalina 2+2 hardtop was one of the best looking cars of the 60s in my opinion. The 65 Chevy Impala SS was a beautiful car too. 1965 was the best styling of any year for GM full size cars in my opinion.
All the politicians who ruined the Pontiac brand in 2008 should be in prison now and we would like to backorder this beautiful piece of Americana with all 4 doors. Sweet.
heck no it isn't too big. I drove a 70 mercury marquis 4 door ocean liner with a 429 in it as a kid. that thing would rip tires off like nobody's business and whoop up on most of the cars in town that were supposed built and fast. it must have been embarrassing to loose to a cargo barge.
This was our Family car from '70 - '74, but it didn't have that motor, many fond memories of driving from MI to TN in it. Went from that from a '55 Buick, both were woven into my fondest memories. A Family of seven in that car, one of us kids had to sit in the front seat between ma and dad, sometimes it was me and dad would let me steer a bit on the freeway, but I'd usually sit in the back seat hoping he'd speed, which he very rarely did, I wated to see us go at least over 80..never came the day though.
Its a muscle car, Australian style. I had back in the late 80s a 1969 Oldsmobile 88 4d sedan with rocket 455 V8 and I can remember blowing a few Camaros 0ff the line and I miss that car now.
Love seeing these "full" size cars from the early to mid 60s and big engines. Pontiac, Chevy, Ford, Dodge, doesn't matter. Just would like to see more videos like this. It's a great change from the usual mustangs, camaro, GTO, etc.
I am sad to say I destroyed a 65' 2+2 in July of 1975. Just 21 days after getting my license and after having the car for a year prior getting into cruising shape, on a winding road, at night, in the hills and a notorious curve I didn't know about until later. There was a long straightaway before the curve, let's just say I got the car slowed down to 85 before the road dropped away in a 90 degree curve to the left. We rolled and flipped 3 or 4 times each landing upright with the roof lowered about halfway to the doors. This was after hitting a steel post just off the road surface then the embankment with softball size granite filler rock. We, my buddy and I, survived thanks to having been wearing the only seatbelts in the car which were lap belts. It was a bucket seat car. And God. A strange thing was happening as we were getting ready to climb out of the car. Elton John's "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" was playing on the radio out of NYC. I really miss that car. I have had some cool ones since then but that is the one I really wish I still had. And I am more of a Mopar guy at 61.
I had a 66 Bonny with the 285 horse 389. If my father wouldn't have owned a gas station I could never have afforded the fuel even at .45 cents a gallon.
The 8 lugs only came in 14 inch....I got a 64 421 tri-power, Slim Jim automatic, console, A/C, PW....wearing manual 8 lug wheel/brakes. Came with extra engines (2) and a few sets of heads, and intakes, and three sets of 8 lug rims. NO Adapter plate to balance any of them in the trunk. Black with Oxblood interior....Catalina 2+2. 1500 cash....in 2005.

I had no idea that anyone had put an 8-bolt hub on a car. I thought those were fake lug nuts on the wheel cover (which is fairly common, but usually only 4-5 of them). Cool!
those wheels look like the optional aluminum hubs and wide bolt pattern wheels, i had the same wheels on my 65 2+2, sure don't look like any wheel covers/hubcaps to me
Luv it! a big fan of full size muscle here. back in the early '70's when i was young gear head teen, in my best friends neighborhood was a '68 BelAir 4 door...white like this Poncho. in '68 Chev put the displacement as a badge next to the front marker light on their whole lineup, and this one had a 427 badge, in red lettering that only the 427's had. I recall it sounded mean, but don't recall if it was a little ol lady or man driving it. normally I didn't think back then that 4 doors were cool, but this one was most definitely cool. There is also an R-code 427 dual quad 4 door Galaxie that was featured on this channel BTW, the eight lugs on this car were added after the fact...Kevin was just reciting the original option list for this car with its hubcaps. you can get a history of Pontiacs at Pontiac Historical Services.
My first car was a two door 65 Catalina with the skirts for the rear wheels, paid $400 in 1969. The trunk is so large, I would haul my Honda 250cc trail bike to the U.P. of Michigan in it for some off-road fun. It had the most sensitive brakes of all the vehicles I own.

Catalina’s, : stories about tuning Three Carbs, etc., topping off with Premium Gasoline, etc,,,,,,though some 427 Ford Station Wagons, or S DEALER Stories with 375 Horse/327 in Chevy IIs make real excitements!

Reminds me of when I saw an article about a Chevy Kingswood Wagon!!! With a 427. With simulated wood sides and all. Awesome. I seem to also recall a TV show that unearthed a 4spd big block country squire that turned out to be a one of one
Man, everyone (I mean everyone) get in and hang on! It's like the Cadillac CTS-V of 1965. 4-door performance sedans were a bit awkward looking and certainly uncommon back then. Nice car.
These sleepers are the most fascinating of the muscle cars...we're they special orders or the product of the guys on the assembly line having fun playing "what if"?
Good question, Hank. Back then a customer like you or me had a lot more freedom to special order what we wanted, within reason. Also, I'm sure there were some 'factory freaks' that came out with irregular options just because the standard part may have been temporarily out of inventory, or had a quality problem. So I imagine ( as you indicated ) a foreman could get creative with what components were installed just to keep the production lines going, because shutting a line down is expensive and could threaten someone's job.
@@67marlins81 I knew a guy who was a line supervisor at a plant back in the 60s and he speced his new car (employees could do it back then, and of course employee pricing to promote brand loyalties) and his team offered to trick out his car for him, which he declined but you have to wonder if that happened other times and was greenlighted by the buyer...a dream ride, a one off for the price of a daily driver...
@@hanktorrance6855 the good old days. I heard one story many years ago, that was either a factory freak or a really bad idea for a 1959 Lincoln: a totally wrong engine, a shadetree swap, or a special order that didn't make much sense.....but it could have happened at the factory, who knows?
@@67marlins81 I like to think that the assembly crews had fun from time to time and that's how we ended up with some of these...or even some dealer, given that you could basically buy a daily grocery getter, walk over to the parts department and order up the racing parts, and take delivery of a completely different car...man those were the days!
More semantics, the brake drum is not a wheel, its a brake drum, and it's aluminum. The wheel is steel. Trim ring is stainless, the tire is rubber...Collectively known as "8-bolt Wheels". Now let's talk about Lincolns, and Continentals, no, wait, Chryslers, and Imperials. If I ever get my hands on a 2+2, the license plate will have to be...wait for it... "4".
Mom had a '65 Bonaville 421 6-pack, automatic (not sure what model) and it had studded snow tires, we would make sparks on the burnout, great fun was had by all. I couldn't find a GTO to swap the 421 in to before Mom wrecked the Bonaville. Rumor was a doctor owned it and needed the 421 6-pack so he could get to the hospital fast to save lives...
When the guy or gal who took delivery if this family style sedan all they had to say is to themselves is "someday this car is going to be collectable". Ya think?

I bet that he was reading from the option list that the car was built with, and the 8 lugs were added later.
I was 15 in 65' and wouldn't even give this land yacht a 2nd look, show me a Vette, now I'm 71' and this is my dream car, go figure

I liked the 2 plus 2 with a. 421 we all use to make a tempest with a 421 and the station wagon was the perfect for towing trailers

Love seeing these "full" size cars from the early to mid 60s and big engines. Pontiac, Chevy, Ford, Dodge, doesn't matter. Just would like to see more videos like this. It's a great change from the usual mustangs, camaro, GTO, etc.

I am sad to say I destroyed a 65' 2+2 in July of 1975. Just 21 days after getting my license and after having the car for a year prior getting into cruising shape, on a winding road, at night, in the hills and a notorious curve I didn't know about until later. There was a long straightaway before the curve, let's just say I got the car slowed down to 85 before the road dropped away in a 90 degree curve to the left. We rolled and flipped 3 or 4 times each landing upright with the roof lowered about halfway to the doors. This was after hitting a steel post just off the road surface then the embankment with softball size granite filler rock. We, my buddy and I, survived thanks to having been wearing the only seatbelts in the car which were lap belts. It was a bucket seat car. And God. A strange thing was happening as we were getting ready to climb out of the car. Elton John's "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" was playing on the radio out of NYC. I really miss that car. I have had some cool ones since then but that is the one I really wish I still had. And I am more of a Mopar guy at 61.

I used to own a 65 Pontiac Catalina 2 + 2 with a 421. The 4-door models with a 421 4 speed were usually used for moon shining.

The 8 lugs only came in 14 inch....I got a 64 421 tri-power, Slim Jim automatic, console, A/C, PW....wearing manual 8 lug wheel/brakes. Came with extra engines (2) and a few sets of heads, and intakes, and three sets of 8 lug rims. NO Adapter plate to balance any of them in the trunk. Black with Oxblood interior....Catalina 2+2. 1500 cash....in 2005.
Right, the car is wearing 8 lugs. Hoever, the build sheet called for code 462-P01 Wheel Discs Deluxe. Perhaps the ride & handling package superseded the order for the caps. We weren't clear in the video, but we know it's got the 8 lugs.
Did they ever make a full cover that LOOKED like the eight - lug wheels ? Buick made some of their chrome five spoke 14 and 15 inch wheels.
I had no idea that anyone had put an 8-bolt hub on a car. I thought those were fake lug nuts on the wheel cover (which is fairly common, but usually only 4-5 of them). Cool!

those wheels look like the optional aluminum hubs and wide bolt pattern wheels, i had the same wheels on my 65 2+2, sure don't look like any wheel covers/hubcaps to me

Luv it! a big fan of full size muscle here. back in the early '70's when i was young gear head teen, in my best friends neighborhood was a '68 BelAir 4 door...white like this Poncho. in '68 Chev put the displacement as a badge next to the front marker light on their whole lineup, and this one had a 427 badge, in red lettering that only the 427's had. I recall it sounded mean, but don't recall if it was a little ol lady or man driving it. normally I didn't think back then that 4 doors were cool, but this one was most definitely cool. There is also an R-code 427 dual quad 4 door Galaxie that was featured on this channel
BTW, the eight lugs on this car were added after the fact...Kevin was just reciting the original option list for this car with its hubcaps. you can get a history of Pontiacs at Pontiac Historical Services.

My first car was a two door 65 Catalina with the skirts for the rear wheels, paid $400 in 1969. The trunk is so large, I would haul my Honda 250cc trail bike to the U.P. of Michigan in it for some off-road fun. It had the most sensitive brakes of all the vehicles I own.

Reminds me of when I saw an article about a Chevy Kingswood Wagon!!! With a 427. With simulated wood sides and all. Awesome.
I seem to also recall a TV show that unearthed a 4spd big block country squire that turned out to be a one of one
The Country Squire was Tom's from Barn Hunter, and yes, 1 of 1. He just sold it a couple months ago.
Man, everyone (I mean everyone) get in and hang on! It's like the Cadillac CTS-V of 1965. 4-door performance sedans were a bit awkward looking and certainly uncommon back then. Nice car.

These sleepers are the most fascinating of the muscle cars...we're they special orders or the product of the guys on the assembly line having fun playing "what if"?

Back then a customer like you or me had a lot more freedom to special order what we wanted, within reason.
Also, I'm sure there were some 'factory freaks' that came out with irregular options just because the standard part may have been temporarily out of inventory, or had a quality problem. So I imagine ( as you indicated ) a foreman could get creative with what components were installed just to keep the production lines going, because shutting a line down is expensive and could threaten someone's job.
@@67marlins81 I knew a guy who was a line supervisor at a plant back in the 60s and he speced his new car (employees could do it back then, and of course employee pricing to promote brand loyalties) and his team offered to trick out his car for him, which he declined but you have to wonder if that happened other times and was greenlighted by the buyer...a dream ride, a one off for the price of a daily driver...

I heard one story many years ago, that was either a factory freak or a really bad idea for a 1959 Lincoln: a totally wrong engine, a shadetree swap, or a special order that didn't make much sense.....but it could have happened at the factory, who knows?
@@67marlins81 I like to think that the assembly crews had fun from time to time and that's how we ended up with some of these...or even some dealer, given that you could basically buy a daily grocery getter, walk over to the parts department and order up the racing parts, and take delivery of a completely different car...man those were the days!

More semantics, the brake drum is not a wheel, its a brake drum, and it's aluminum. The wheel is steel. Trim ring is stainless, the tire is rubber...Collectively known as "8-bolt Wheels". Now let's talk about Lincolns, and Continentals, no, wait, Chryslers, and Imperials. If I ever get my hands on a 2+2, the license plate will have to be...wait for it... "4".
Mom had a '65 Bonaville 421 6-pack, automatic (not sure what model) and it had studded snow tires, we would make sparks on the burnout, great fun was had by all. I couldn't find a GTO to swap the 421 in to before Mom wrecked the Bonaville. Rumor was a doctor owned it and needed the 421 6-pack so he could get to the hospital fast to save lives...
