- 1962 Pontiac Catalina Super Duty Super Stock Video Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode #89
This week, we dive into drag racing history once again with a 1962 Pontiac Catalina Super Duty, featuring the race-bred 421 V8 and the aluminum front body panels. This car was successfully campaigned by the Packer Pontiac team driven by Howard Maseles. In it's day, this car ran the quarter in 11.73 at 118 MPH, good enough for a national NHRA Super Stock record. Today, it is one of the many historical Muscle Cars in the Brothers Collection.

My first car ever was a hand-me-down Baby Blue 62 Catalina 2 door hardtop, 389 with 3 on the tree, dual exhaust and positive traction. A lot of great memories driving that car and exploring the back seat. Thanks Dad! I miss you Pal.
Got to love the old factory racers....those were the days!
More of these please!
What a cool car. I miss Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Plymouth. Actually I miss when life was simpler.
‘62 is by far one of my favorite years for the Pontiac Catalina. Truly a masterpiece in style and craftsmanship. Had the opportunity to own a 389 4- SPD Catalina and was outbid by someone willing to pay more than the asking price. Great video!
RIP Pontiac ...my first car in HighSchool was 1970 Firebird Formula with 400 HO RamAir 4spd and 160mph speedo Green with green interior. Man do I miss that car.......
One of best friends bout new a 1970 firebird formula 400 ..dark blue with auto trans. Sweet car..he wanted to sell it to me for a about $1500 and of course I didn't...back then there were many muscle cars for sale..........
Solid stuff. As a Detroit guy, the big Pontiac dealers were Packer, Royal, Causley and Long. All had hot "Chiefs" racing at Detroit Dragway. Great times. Thanks for telling this one's great story, sir.
Probably my favorite Pontiac ever 62 421SD Catalina
I’d love to have that. Like a lot of old ass men I’m trying to relive my youth. In 1965 I had to sell my 348 horse 62 Grand Prix. Kind never forgot it and bought another one a week ago. I figure not much of my hard earned money is coming with me to the hereafter. Thanks for showing this awesome car.
An amazing car, I watched it race. I am 80 yrs. old now.
Buddy of mine had an uncle that was a mechanic at Packer Pontiac in Detroit from the 50s thru the 70s. He would stop by during his "road-test" with some various cars. It seemed like Packer and Royal (Royal Oak Michigan) Pontiac were being sponsored by some in-house GM racing engineers although it was "officially denied". A lot of sleepers and mules were cruising Woodward, Telegraph and Stecker Avenues back then with manufacturer plates. Thanks for the great memory, glad I was born & raised in Detroit and enjoyed every minute.
Super cool car...in 1962 Turing a 11.7 quarter mile was almost unheard of ... in 1968 I drove a 1968 camaro 427 c.i. heavily modified on the street... and got to the high 11 second range at Minnesota dragways...so to do that in 1962 is amazing
Great car, keep them coming . I grew up with these cars and still love them after 50 years. :-)
Don Mann me too, believe a SD 421 Catalina ,hooked me in 1962 at the Gas Station my High School Buddies hung about....
One of the first real muscle cars. One of my favorites, an awesome car.
Nothing like a 421 Super Duty 🏁
Pontiacs were exciting cars in the sixties. It's nice to see such good examples preserved or restored to factory fresh condition.
Love it. I had a 4 door 62 when I was in our favorite uncle's employ. Bought a wrecked GTO and swapped the whole power train. Including 4 speed. Great sleeper.
421 Super Duty......the BADDEST engine ever produced by Pontiac, and one of the baddest engines ever put in ANY muscle car of that era. Saw one crank out 488 horsepower at 6000 rpm on the dyno, BONE STOCK!!! Right before that they dyno tested a bone stock 409/409 Chevy engine and it was only able to crank out 406 horsepower at 6000 rpm. The 421SD is comparable to the Chrysler 426 Hemi, which I witnessed crank out 493 horsepower at 6000 rpm on the dyno. I'd like to see what a stock R-Code 427 Ford and BOSS 429 engine are capable of on the dyno in stock form
The 421 h.o. I put in my 65 G.T.O. was modified.. had about 550 h.p.
Yes it was , no other Poncho in the 1960s could touch her , Goats , Firebirds all bow to the Mighty 421 🏁🏁🏁
I owned a 1961 Catalina just after graduating from high school in '65. It was creme white like this one with the red interior, but had the "bubble top." It was a 389 3-deuce motor with an auto tranny, as I remember it had about 348 horsepower. Seeing what bubble tops are going for today, I really wish I still had the car.
My Pop had a 62 catalina convertable with a 389 4brl pretty potent for it's age I was only about 3 or 4 years old but I remember him rolling that at over 100mph. Pontiacs had the most pretty interiers of any of the cars of that era.
What a piece of Pontiac history. Maybe you could get that 63 for us too. Thanks for posting.
Love it one of the best episodes.
The ‘62 Catalina was one of the most beautifully designed cars of all time.
The Catalina with the 421 super duty held several speed records.
She was a beast ! 🏁
And enjoy your high 12s low 13s from the factory 🏁
I love seeing some of these old muscle cars that were the platforms to all the same ol same ol popular, GTO, Firebirds, Camaro and I sometimes think people only think that there were fast back shelby gt mustangs....and the only strong motor by mopar was a hemi...well a huge majority of people these days don't know what a hemi is or what it means....but great video, I love these old muscle cars!
Love that car.
Amazing. Thanks for all these videos big time!!!!!
You could hit a golf ball from my grandmother's front yard and it would land in the Pontiac motors parking lot and she always had a Pontiac with the biggest engine they had, she worked for GMC Coach for 35 years!!! RIP Grandma!!! 2022
Back in 85 a friend bought 2 cars off the property of an older gentlemen in a small town of Crystal Springs, Mississippi, one car was one as shown on the vidio, running and complete with all the alum, components, the other was a 59 cat, with a 421 that the owner installed, both cars were purchased together, for a grand.they stayed around till the mid 90s,an dissiperd.
Beautiful Machine... I Love it! Thanks for Sharing
Those checkered flag tires are gnarly!
Supercool Poncho. I believe the differential housing is AL as well. I would have liked to see it put on a scale to see the wgt cut.
Back for seconds. Great car and great video presentation.
Another great video Kevin, you are the man.
Brian Cabral Thanks Brian!
@@MuscleCarOfTheWeek I agree ! And if you were from ISRAEL I'd say "Jew da man" HAHAHA
Love yer vids.
One of my friends bought a used Catalina 2+2 with a 421, with 2-4bbl induction, and a 4spd,. It was a big boat of a car, but was extremely fast and fun to drive. I can't remember exact numbers, but it ran in the low 13's at over 112 mph in the quarter. It could have used more gear and better tires, as it was heavy and a bit slow off the line. Once the revs came up it would scream. It was faster than most GTOs of the day.
Outstanding Kevin!
I would enjoy your show more if you spent more time driving the cars. Stepping into them a bit to see them go.
Watch Jay Leno
AMAZES ME THAT IT CAME WITH 14S!!
Fireball Roberts!
"Ned im on fire put me out." Fireball Roberts last words to his friend Ned Jarrett. According to Ned.
I'm a Mopar guy and a big fan of Richard Petty but Fireball would've gone down as maybe the greatest of all time if he didn't get die from the burns he suffered in that crash at Charlotte. Fireball was one hell of a race car driver
Ilove that Pontiac used the same block for all there configurations.
I remember when I was a kid, My uncle had a a 2 door like that and my dad had a station wagon that year. I always thought the wagon was cool. 3 speed on the tree. Then my dad of course put in the floor. My dad didn't have a truck at the time, He went to my grandmas house and cut a tree down and hauled all the wood in the station wagon. You may have seen him hauling the wood. My grandma lived off rt 3 across from Hillcastle rd in Columbia ! LOL !
These cars had personality not like the generic , mundane cars of today!
Wow, Pontiac produced 179 of these super stock, lightweight, racing Catalinas!? I would've expected more like 10-15-20 tops!
My dad had one, that he raced. He came from money , but he made sure that he spent every dime on racing .
'63 They only made 14 SD's, then GM shut down Pontiac's Racing program !
Thank you great information
Great video and car, A thumbs up for you.
My dad was a Pontiac racer in the mid 60's, and I have no clue where he got it ,but I have one of those Eldebrock/Pontiac intake manifolds. Dad died in 99,and I was told about that dam center head for 20 years .he told me when he was full of cancer where he got it. He stole it off another racers spare motor somewhere in Detroit .lol
The 421 engine came out as a 1962 1/2 mode....I miss buying that car by a few days...
The 421 SD actually first came out late in 1961 as a crate engine. But in 62 they started factory installing them because of an NHRA rule change
I lived near Royal Pontiac I drooled Gee to tiger was right there so cool
Interestingly couple views of 1962 **Catalina 421 SD HOOKED ME ON Cars back in High School Days....rumor one had a **4 Speed Automatic..... ( * I guess only GRAN PRIX 4SP AUTO) is kind of interesting, in 1957 to early Sixties, the excitements of Racing STOCK Car, Ram Chargers, even R2-5 (.?) Studebakers, etc, anyhow, good overview Kevin & Crew.....k
You got it, Pontiac!
Awesome!
There's NO school, like OLD school...
More old school NASCAR and factory 1/4 Mile warriors please! 😎🤘🏻
I wish you all, a Very Merry Christmas, when it arrives....and a Happy New Year!!
This was the same idea as Ford used on the contemporary lightweight Galaxie models with the R-code 427. Chrysler had similar offerings with the 426 Max Wedge although they didn't feature lightened front end panels but they were sold with minimal options to keep their weight down to a minimum. No one cared about EPA fuel economy ratings in those days as regular gas sold for as little as 25 cents per gallon and 40 cents a gallon for premium was considered expensive.
Rumor has it there were two 1962 super duty Grand Prix's made also!
I always like that Catalina! And the 421! It was a bad idea to drop the Pontiac V8. That's where they doomed Pontiac IMO. It withstood the 70s at least til 78. The 301 was decent for transportation but not the traditional Pontiac.
Wish they made more of them. One of my pipe dream cars. Next to a modified '73 SD-455.
Me too. But add a 69 Ram Air IV GTO to the list too...and a 57 Bonneville 347 Tri Power
You can still build one...
absolute giga-chad car
These engines have been Dyno'd at 500 HP
Yup I've seen it myself. The factory 405 hp rating is laughable. Saw a bone stock 421 SD on an engine dyno and it peaked at 488 horsepower at 6000 rpm and well over 500 lb/ft of torque. A lot of people don't know how awesome the SD Catalina's really were because they go by the factory horsepower rating and think that's all the power those engines made
i swear if any company would offer a bench seat option today, it would sell like hot cakes.
I owned a sky blue"63" Grand Prix- in the late "70"s 389, 4bbl+ 3speed turbo tranny on the floor chrome console and stick. White leather interior. ( wish I had it now)!
Hey Kevin, nice work as always. With all that aluminum, do you know just how "light" these cars are?
Thanks, Alex
Percentage-wise how much would aluminum make the car lighter?
I want that car..!!!
Les Lennington had one for Meadows Pontiac in Yakima was black came with three on floor had to order four speed for it!!!!
They also made a 428 engine
Yup, 465hp and 510tq however probably a bit more. Does the name Fireball Roberts ring a bell?
I saw a bone stock 421 SD on an engine dyno and it peaked at 488 horsepower at 6000 rpm and well over 500 lb/ft of torque. Seriously underrated engine
That sounds about right the 421 Super Duty were severly underated ( 405 factory rated hp ) actually putting out between 460-480 hp stock from the factory 🏁
Most definitely, they honestly put down at the flywheel over 490hp and 497-500+lb ft of Tq with OE casted D port heads. Kind of insane honestly. Butler tested one on thier Dyno and came up with those #,s. My 1969 Pontiac 400 four bolt main put down 480hp and 532 ft of Tq at the flywheel when it was Dynoed in 2017 by my local builder of all types of race engines with 50yrs of experience now. It’s original Nodular Iron crank was lightening, knife edged, journal’s were highly polished. Coated racing bearings were installed, 1974 SD rods were sourced, shot peened and resized 3 times. ARP series 2000 fasteners were used on the mains and rods. Billet Ross coated flat top dual relief pistons are used with titanium full floating wrist pins. It’s completed rotation assembly was balanced to within 1/4 gram across the whole assembly included my harmonic balancer and flex plate. It’s Zero decked with Butler prepared 1969 #62 heads that were bowl ported and runner cleaned and gasket matched to my current Edelbrock Torquer intake. Carb is a 1976 Quadrajet 800CFM unit that was opened up/reworked by my builder to 850+ Cfm max he told me. Fuel pump currently is a Carter 140Gph mechanical. I have 340/355 Cfm CNC ported KRE aluminum heads with portmatched gasket matched Northwind intake waiting to be installed with a Robb Mc surge tank and Quick fuel BDQ 950 with 1050 Cfm center section to be installed once it’s running and dialed in. I was told by many builders who really know what they are doing like Jeff Kauffman, a rep at Butler, two guys at SD performance, All Pontiac.com and also Lynn Mcarty and his current Pontiac N/A record breaking/holding Crankshaft builder Dave in Michigan, they have all told me I don’t need a stroker kit or more bore in my 400/406 to get past 600hp and Lb ft of Tq at the flywheel with it on pump gas. My KRE heads are 74cc chambers, Jeff told me 89-91octane will run well. So yes I’m very excited but want to make sure all my upgraded fuel delivery components are all set up before I go forward with the install. My current 1969 #62 heads flow Maby 260-280 Cfm if I’m lucky. She runs nice so far however if you do the math.340-350Max Cfm CNC ported Aluminum heads should get me close to 600Lb ft of Tq & 600hp, probably a lil more if my calculations are correct. They usually are 😉. I was told they can support up to 1200Cfm of fuel delivery however I’m not anxious to bend one of my Super Duty connecting rods to find out. Road Course racing is my major concern with it and perhaps an occasional 1/4 mile or 1/2 mile run. Also of course cruising with my kids during local car events as well. It’s in my1964, 3212Lb Tempest Custom 2dr post car backed by a built for racing 200-4r with two Trans oil coolers. The Trans is built to withstand up to 900Lb ft of Tq. I’ve had the car since 1995 and now finally, most recently, I’ve got it fully adjustable QA1 equipped and a quality Willwood 4 disk I installed as well. It was a lot of work to get it all right and tight but severely worth it.
@@joshbrekke6374 The Pontiac Super Duty 421 was one badass factory race engine that bows to no make or muscle cars of the 1960s , no one ! 🏁
@@davegeisler7802 exactly, and it paved the way for future copy cats. Starting with the SD 389 around 1959-60. Remember the 1963 SD 421 Lemans that Won the Special race in Florida? By over 4 laps?!!!! It was bought by Mercedes and never seen again. AMG my ass! I vow to prove my 406 will never bow to any N/A LS and I plan to prove it too.
It is sad that the Pontiac division of Chevrolet is closed forever....very sad.
Division of GM same as Chevrolet was a division.
Chevrolet/GMC, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, and Cadillac were all divisions of GM
Cool car. My dad had a 72 Bonnieville with a 389 in it.
Wish I knew then what I know now
I've owned a 73 Firebird, a 76 Trans Am 455 SD & a 72 Lemans. My dad owned a 64 GTO & a 74 SD Firebird. I want to kick myself every time I think of them.
The 455 SD was discontinued in 74. No SD's were built after that. Impossible to have a 76 455 SD unless one was put in it after the fact.
@@jamesspalten1772 The reason I called mine an SD is because we put the 4 Bolt main Caps on that block. My Dad also owned a machine shop called Colby Automotive. It came with the 455 & a Super T -10 4 Speed. Since my Dad built Pontiac's, we always had a set of 4 Bolt Main caps laying around. That's why I called mine a SD 455.
No such thing as a 76 SD-455. They only made them in 73-74. The SD-455 block was totally different than a regular 455. The SD had 4 bolt mains, extra webbing around the lifter bores and in the camshaft area, provisions for dry sump oiling, and a bigger distributor. The SD heads also had round ports and the regular 455 had D shaped ports. They had some other differences too but I can't remember them all. Really impressive engines. Performance and durability wise they far exceeded anything else built in 1973-74
@@jeremythompson9122 Lol, you do know they sell 4 Bolt main caps for Pontiac blocks right?? My Trans Am was a 76, the motor was not. So before you get on your little pontiac high horse, remember people do ENGINE/PARTS SWAPS to make said 455 Super Duty. #asshat
I had a 62 Bonneville convertible with a 68 GTO 400 4 speed it had 8 lug wheels very fast and I paid 300.00 for it back in 1976
It is great to see Pontiac getting it's much owed credit they were and will always live in history as the pretty performers that they are RIP PMD.
Also RIP Mr Nat Khan of Khan motors a Pontiac dealer that my dad worked for in englwood NJ.
I’m basically a Mopar guy but ‘C’mon this was cutting edge then, nice car made before ponchos got big and bloated
Does Fireball Roberts ring a bell?
First thing I think of when I see a 61 or 62 Pontiac is Fireball Roberts
I thought that the Super Duty had 8 lug nuts
The eight lug wheels were optional equipment. The aluminum center hub / brake drum replaced the stock drums and bolted on with the stock five studs, the outer rim bolted to the hub / drum with eight lugs .

Thanks for the info. 👍
Aluminium exhaust manifold!?
Needs headers and head work...another 50 h.p.
My dad raced a 62 SD 421 with the aluminum front clip. Believe me,those Ol dogs knew that . 150 made and he sold his ,that he bought new in 1999 for 8000$ . Had cancer , and I'm a Ford 427sohc man.
Now that was a Street machine (not a muscle car).
👀...👍🔥😎🔥👍
Why no side mirrors?
Chris - the bare bones, baseline version of many cars of that era didn’t include exterior mirrors.
SD Package added $1300 bucks ---- what's that get you today?
Why didn't they go with a lighter two door sedan/coupe? Do not believe an aluminum exhaust manifold would withstand the heat. 4:55
The engines with aluminum exhaust manifolds carried a warning not to exceed 70 MPH for more than 15 seconds. So, yes - you are correct! Fortunately, a dragstrip run was over way before 15 seconds...
@@paulplack490 - This is also why Top Fuel and funny cars have no cooling systems. They aren't run long enough to be needed.
I knew a guy that raced a '62 Catalina with the 421 since he bought it in 1964 , he thought the sedan would be faster also , so he found one and swapped in his drivetrain. The sedan ran slower than the hardtop , so he swapped everything back .
It figures, a Chinese restaurant sitting where Packer Pontiac used to be. Still think we're number 1? What's the difference, everything else is made somewhere else and we let it happen.
HEY I STILL THINK GM MADE A BAD MISTAKE THEY SHOULD HAVE GOT RID OF BUICK AND KEPT OLD S AN PONTIAC
Pontiac king of the Muscle .. Gto 60s top 3 , then welcome the Firebird Formula who took over the early an late 70s , then 80s, 90s an early 2000s the Formulas where King of the road !!! ive had 6 2 formulas an 4 Trans ams ,. 79 /10 ann 403 olds changed to 400 american , 82 night rider blk on gold with nitrous 350, 84 Trans am 305 , 86 Firebird 5.0 l , 88 Formula 350 , an currently my 93 Formula ... fact Pontiac died to save corvette an camaros egos .... Camaro lmao styless lil sis of the Formula !!!
Watch this one 2 the end
To think they got rid of Pontiac!!?? Why because they put a woman in charge
Such a shame what GM has become. Just a globalist puppet corporation. I'll never buy another GM product again as long as I live. They take billions in bailouts from us then once they had our money they close multiple plants in North America and move to Mexico anyways. Typical scumbag Liberal move. They can go totally bankrupt for all I care. I'll stick to buying either Ford or Dodge products now
Look at it this way Plymouth Pontiac and those will be on maybe gone but at least they went peacefully they didn't stick around long enough to be turned into the boring four-door pieces of junk that everyone seems to be in love with nowadays Good god a Plymouth SUV it's enough to make you want to get sick.
My friend in the military took the Engine and put it in a 68 gto fast car
I PUT A 421 H.O. AND MODIFIED IN MY 1965 G.T.O. after I blew the 389 motor...turned mid 12 seconds... I beat all the competition..and the 2 motors looked the same....
The master cylinder was only the size of a china coffee cup. Go fast, stop slowly.
I have one for sale
We gave the power to our feds in washington. The beginning of the end for our american auto industry. Just saying.
This not your daddy's Pontiac.
At 6:40 he says that there's a takeout Chinese food restaurant on the site of Packard Pontiac I live three blocks from there there is no takeout Chinese food restaurant at that location. Don't use hyperbole to make your story sound interesting. It was interesting without the LIE.
