    I had arthroscopic meniscus surgery 14 days ago! After surgery was done I walked to our vehicle carrying my crutches! I took one pain pill the day of surgery, two the next day and two again on Friday! No serious pain after second day! I am walking without a limp! I am doing minor house chores! I am 74 years old and would do this again if needed in a heartbeat!

    THANK YOU.
    THESE QUESTIONS GO OUT TO ANYONE WHO CAN ANSWER THESE. AND I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A SPEEDY AND GOOD RECOVERY.
    10 weeks after your meniscectomy were you able to bend your leg all the way back as far as your good leg bends back? Or are you only able to bend it about 90°? And on bending it about 90° did you feel pressure in the knee? Did you still have some swelling of the knee? Were you easily able to walk up and down steps or did you still have a limited range that made it difficult?
    I am in my mid 60s and had a partial medial bucket handle meniscectomy. My surgeon showed me the pics. There's no wear or damage to my cartilage. He showed how smooth and undamaged it is. And I was walking around with the bucket handle meniscus tear for 5 months until the surgery! And my job is a physical one. I'm just very lucky.
    This is my situation. I'm trying to get an idea of all of this through searching online different resources.
    I'm going through PT now.

    I'm very depressed, I had acl reconstruction using cadaver and a partial medial and lateral menisectomy. I have arthritis and chondromalacia patella. Im 8 weeks post op and experiencing more pain than I had anticipated. I have been in physical therapy and currently still working on my quad muscle. "My quad won't fire" physical therapist exact words. I work in a large hospital as a phlebotomist and I work a 12 HR shift.in off at the moment do to surgery, at work I'm constantly on my feet and on the go. I'm so overwhelmed with pain and the thought of never getting better. I injured my knee in 06 and thought it would heal on its own. Well after many reinjuries later ftom not being stable it became worse and to the point if I wanted to keep my job I had to have surgery and take FMLA. Well I really regret surgery I feel more pain than I ever did pre op. I feel I have no options

      Sorry for what you have gone through and are currently going through. Its difficult to address this in this format but hopefully you are seeing your doctor like you should and he will be able to address your concerns. This surgery absolutely take time and A LOT of patience an time. Yours may take more time because of your history and every body is different, heals different. Make sure your exercises with the therapist area functional as possible. To start with, ask your therapist if that is the case and go from there. You have to stay within your restrictions and whatever that program is or allows, needs to be what we in our field call "functional". In my opinion, of course:)

      Hey there. I know what you are going through. I too, had menisectomy on my left medial meniscus. I had a big root tear and I have a piece of metal under my knee cap. I also have a fracture in the kneecap. I am only 2 weeks out. I understand how this pain can be unbearable at times. I cry through PT. I hope I didn't go through all this for nothing. I originally was told I should get a knee replacement, but I am too obese for that right now. I was told I'm bone on bone now. 😢 I'm trying to remain optimistic

    i had meniscus tear, damaged and lost of cartilage and patella with hole. As for me i never experience any pain from the day i had the arthroscope. its either the painkiller given to me was too good or the surgeon had done a great job. i only been given tramadol n paracetamol as my pain killer beside antibiotic immediately after the scope . so far the healing process is good in a week i could bend my knee n reach 105 degree . I just could wait to proceed with weight bearing physio since my leg is still under 6 weeks confinement for no weight bearing physio due to micro fracture. For those with the same problem, don’t be scared. the surgery technology has become better just find the courage and proceed with the treatment and treat your knee accordingly. i feel really blessed for deciding to undergone the procedure.

    I think I definitely underestimated the procedure
    I am 9 weeks post op and it took a lot of hard work to get here where i am about 90% improved
    I think a few things matter
    1) strengthen your leg, cycle, physio etc
    2) weight-loss
    3) be positive, done give up, work towards a goal

The meniscus is now smaller on left knee . Gel shots were of no help. Have clicking/popping noises coming from left knee almost on every other move i make. I read now on certain websites that you cannot get rid of this sometimes ! I cannot believe this ! So infuriating . PT did not help at all for 4 months and now i read that you need to strengthen glutes more so than anything else. Not sure what to do !!!! Horrible !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I had a partial mensicectomy 32 days ago. Injury was likely degenerative in the form of a small radial tear in medial area. I am an avid runner (marathons) and had this surgery so I can get back to training without pain or further damaging the tear. Instructions were that weight bearing immediately is ok, but to gradually walk, ride bike very casually and avoid any real impact for at least a few weeks. I am instructed not to attempt running for 6 weeks. To maintain habits and some muscle strength I ride my beach cruiser on flat ground almost daily for 40 to 50 minutes (no pressure on surgery side), I also walk from 10 minutes to 45 minutes at a time. Walking is what has the most negative impact at this point. I am religious about icing (2-4 times daily still) and am doing glute strengthening and stretching 5-6 times per week. Recently I aqua jogged in the local pool focusing on ROM, but want to do it again today with focus on heart rate/cardio and maybe take it easy on ROM. But, it seems the stiffness came when I aqua jogged. MY QUESTION: this past week my knee has been stiff each morning when I wake up. It goes away after only a few minutes, but the knee is feeling a little clunky. Could this be simply overuse? My concern is re-tearing, but there has never been swelling and I have not put full running type pressure on it yet. Thanks in advance for your perspective. I have my 2nd follow up appt in 10 days and am not sure how aggressive I should be with my exercising/rehab. btw: I am 62.

    I had a partial meniscectomy and mostly felt pain in the area of the 2 drill holes where the surgical equipment was inserted. I felt very little to no pain in the inside of the knee where the meniscus is. 7 hours after the operation I walked out of the hospital (crutches in hand) and drove myself home. 15 days later nearly all discomfort was gone. PS my diet is anti-inflammatory so I eat a lot of fruit and veggies, no refined sugar and alcohol, and very, very little dairy, meat and poultry. I am almost a vegetarian. I think diet has a lot to do with recovery.

    Well it's been 10 months, 2 cortisone shots and in 3 weeks 3 gel shots. And I am still hurting worse than Before the surgery. And now the Dr says he knows what is wrong with my knee, I need a knee replacement. But it wasn't in this shape before surgery? Be careful with this surgery people, no joking about this. I wish never had this surgery. Absolutely the most painful thing I ever did. He went in and removed a portion of the meniscus.(the Dr. Says to me) "Oh yeah by the way your cartridge had arthritis on it so I removed all of it and also drilled holes into the bone so it would regenerate itself!" Read the study's this surgery shortens your path to a knee replacement.

    I had this arthroscopic surgery done. One meniscus had a large tear that they removed while the outer needed debridement. They also found and removed a small cyst while they were in there. For me the pain level was very manageable but the oxycodone that they gave me was pretty worthless. Seems I have a high tolerance for opiates. I pounded the Tylenol and it seemed to work better than the oxycodone. However the after surgery pain lingered until I had total knee replacement a year later. Again however, the pain management after knee replacement was horrible. Once the 'block' wore off oxycodone was a waste but the pain was more than double after the arthroscopic surgery and the pain management from both the hospital as well as the surgeon were severely lacking. I finally increased the dosage of pain medicines (oxycodone and tylenol, then hydrocodone and more tylenol) just to sleep at night. The pain increased right after daily therapy so I would ice and later in the day I used my heating pad to temporarily decrease the pain. It's been almost 6 weeks since the replacement and finally the pain is manageable and tolerable.

      Sorry you had to deal with that kind of pain, that is not the norm. Sounds like you should be able to move forward now that the pain is better and you're 6 weeks out. Keep exercising, too soon to stop. If you still need a PT then arrange that if insurance allows otherwise I have exercises for the total knee replacement you can view and try. It definitely takes hard work on your part after the total knee replacement but if my patients do it most are very functional and happy. Good luck, work hard and get back to the life you enjoy.

      Sorry Im just seeing this....sleeping with leg elevated is usually just for the first week or so but if a person is having swelling still, elevation at night is helpful. Hopefully you are done with that and doing better.

    I went back to work as a teacher, on my feet a lot, just over two weeks after my arthroscopic meniscus trim. I wasn’t entirely pain free, but felt ready to return. My doctor said it was ok. I’ve been in PT from the start. The first day back wasn’t too bad, but after the next two days my pain increased, similar to my pain before the surgery, sharp pain front, inside knee. Especially if I turn/twist in any way. By the third day my knee and even ankle were swollen. My PT changed my routine to isometric since it was so painful. She said swelling is caused by metabolic changes while healing. She pointed out that the recovering knee was warmer than the other indicating the healing/work going on in my knee. By the fourth day I had to stay home from work. I’ve now been limiting weight bearing and doing isometric exercises for two days. My ankle swelling has just gone down. Could the amount of time on my feet have caused this pain? Could I have injured myself or set myself back by walking with this pain for three days? I’m waiting on a return call from my surgeon. I wonder if I overdid it going back to a job on my feet just over two weeks after the surgery? What can/should I do now? I don’t want to slow recovery by doing nothing, but also don’t want to slow recovery by doing the wrong thing? Where’s the happy medium? I want to feel pain free!

    • @carlaschimmelpfennig3788
      @carlaschimmelpfennig3788  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I didnt see this sooner. Two weeks, in my opinion, is early especially depending on the extent of work done during the scope, your age, health and fitness level in general. The best thing you can do now is talk to your doctor and wait longer to return to work. The timeline of healing is different for everyone so don't be too hard on yourself. As far as hurting your knee..if the meniscus was trimmed and not repaired it should be fine. Probably too quick to get back to work. Let me know how you're doing now that its been a week.

    Hi, based on your experience, is it normal to have swelling 3 weeks Post- Op (meniscus repair)?

    • @carlaschimmelpfennig3788
      @carlaschimmelpfennig3788  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is normal to still have swelling based on a few factors. One would be all that was done inside the knee and your surgeon can explain that. Some other reasons would be what you yourself have/have not done such as elevating, ice, the right exercise, needs etc. Your doctor should be the best one to help explain all that or a physical therapist if you are seeing one. I always tell people to make their caregivers know your concerns or fears so they can help ease the situation. If its normal based on all that was done inside your knee then there is no reason to be concerned at this point. I just saw your comment so sorry Im a week later getting to you.I do hope you're swelling is decreasing.

      No problem...it will feel stiff and thats very normal due to swelling and what was done to your knee. If your doctor said to remove the bandage and start to move it then definitely do that today. Just start by lying on your couch or bad and bend the knee up or what we call heel slides( sliding you heel toward you butt). Go to whats comfortable at first and go further as it loosens up. Watch my other videos on how to elevate properly and knee scope program 1 for some good exercises. You will be fine, just follow your doctors orders and get it moving nice and easy.

      That can happen after an ACL repair. The repair itself is actually its weakest at 8-10 weeks, needs to be well protected. Returning to work too soon or doing things you aren't suppose to do yet can cause pain and swelling. Follow your doctors orders and restrictions for the safest route. If you are uneasy, make an appointment to see your surgeon.

      @carlaschimmelpfennig3788  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Going back to standing for 8 hours/day too soon can be pretty difficult. Most people find if they rest, elevate, ice and perform specific exercises from their therapist or doctor and don't over do it, they can get back to work in 7-10 days. At that point it probably won't be pain free or swelling free but manageable. Elevate and ice in the beginning when you take a break at work. Hopefully you are able to take the time off your doctor recommends.

The only problem I have is that it keeps locking up and then i can't move it. I've had this problem since Day 1 after surgery, so not sure if that is normal or not. My physio says it will take a little bit to filly heal 100% as I was walking *limping* around on a bad knee for 11 months before they decided that they would do something about it. I’m having 80% of my medial meniscus removed and 50-75% of the body removed as well. After reading most of the comments, it appears that ice and elevation are key. How in the heck does one ice a knee that is wrapped in thick ace bandages?

    • @carlaschimmelpfennig3788
      @carlaschimmelpfennig3788  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thick bandage of gaze pads, etc is usually removed the day after or within a few days, then the ice is much more effective. If your doctor wants an ace bandage on longer, you can apply the ice then wrap the knee back up or put it right over the ace bandage. Elevation is your main thing until that thick bandage is removed but before that your doctor will likely still tell you to put ice on that knee.

      @carlaschimmelpfennig3788  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You may need to use crutches right after surgery but some people do not use any assistive device, depends on what your doctor wants. Generally 2 weeks before going back to work but that varies with everyone as well and depends on your doctor. I have had patients return to work after a few days and some need more than 10-14 days. It usually depends on how much work was done to the knee. Best to follow your doctors advice on returning to work and ambulation.

    • @carlaschimmelpfennig3788
      @carlaschimmelpfennig3788  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Everybody is different but running and rotating on the knee at 8 weeks is early. 12-6 weeks it will probably be much more tolerable.( Assuming we are talking about a knee scope). If you aren't doing exercises I would advise the exercises in my knee programs (1 and 2). You can find them here on my youtube channel in playlists.

    • @carlaschimmelpfennig3788
      @carlaschimmelpfennig3788  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can take different time frame for everyone, depends on your age, activity level prior to surgery and all that was done in the surgery. 6 weeks is a turning point for most people as long as you have done what you needed to do as far as exercise, ice and elevation in the beginning(may still be needed), and you haven't been over doing it in any way. Between 4 and 6 weeks it should start to loosen up and feel better. Make sure you are doing everything your doctor has suggested. Let your doctor know if you have followed all advice and things don't improve in the 2 weeks.

    I had a full ACL reconstruction using a hamstring graft, as well as a lateral and medial meniscectomy through arthroscopy. My pain meds hardly help, and the only relief I get is when I lay down, elevate my leg and throw ice on it (as long as I have not missed my pain meds alarm). I almost pass out from the pain standing up to hobble to the bathroom (I feel the rushing of blood, however it feels like I can feel my sutures ripping open). When is a good time frame that I could expect to have not as much pain so I could go to PT? I don't have a follow up with ortho for another week and a half (my surgery was on 4/14, it is now 4/17 and ortho follow up is 4/25) and physical therapy is supposed to be tomorrow, however I can't even get off the couch. Do you have any advice for me? My doctors don't explain anything very well and when I ask them about this they say "well you have a major procedure done. Here's some more pain meds". Any advice you could give, or if I'm supposed to be doing anything to help the pain (besides meds, rest and ice) would be GREATLY appreciated. Also, he advised me to not move my leg very much, but I keep seeing and reading I should be trying to hobble around on crutches, or trying to do leg lifts? Please help!

      Tonisha Wagner so it's now 2.5 months since I had my surgery... I am still in quite a bit of pain, however when my nurse told me to keep my leg straight until I saw PT she didn't realize I didn't see them for two weeks after surgery, so I have ALOT of scar tissue build up that is breaking up. Best advice I can give is to elevate and ice truthfully, I know that sounds ridiculous but that is the only thing that helped. If you can, try to get one of those cryo therapy machines (wraps around your leg and pumps ice water through you can pick up one off amazon for $200 or rent a game ready but those are $2500 for the machine to purchase and idk how much to rent). The ice machines help because they wrap around your knee, and I didn't need just ice on top, I wanted it all the way around. When I had it all the way around it felt so much better. My doctor told me I should have started trying to bend it a little after surgery to prevent scar tissue (which I didn't know) and to get your range of motion back. Sad to say girl, it's going to hurt and it will hurt for a while. If you just had the surgery, don't try and "be strong" and skip the pain meds. Stay on top of them and take them. Also, my doctor gave me a muscle relaxer because I was also having muscle spasms that hurt in my leg, if that's the case see if you can get some. Sleep as much as you can (I know it's hard, try on your side with a pillow between your legs), and don't get up unless your going to the bathroom. I noticed if I slowly brought my leg down from elevation and slowly went from laying to sitting to standing it helped ALOT with the blood rush pain (like take 5 minutes to go from laying to standing it's a pain but it helps). Let me know how it goes!!
