As a former paramedic. this just devastates me. I actually had an ambulance stolen out of the ambulance bay at one of the local hospitals we used to frequent. In my case, it was a mental patient who slipped out of the ED, stole the rig and drove it home. RIP, sister.

Georgia Geoprepper had the same thing happen to us to.....we stopped at a convenience store in between runs ....we were checking out and out of the corner of my eye I see our rig backing out...we run out and the truck was gone....and to make it worse it was a brand new ambulance....the cops got it back fast though....the chief wasn't real happy about it......my deepest condolences go out to the family and the members of the FDNY

It's not that easy. There are many reasons we medics need to enter our rigs speedily, and do not have time to fish for keys. I can speak from past experiences where my partner and I had to enter our rig fast and get out of the area until pd arrived because of a pt or the PT's family become agitated.
Also, locking the doors locks all our doors on the rigs my company uses which hinders speedy care.

Because of all the lights, radio, computers, rescue equipment etc, the rig must be left running. All the equipment must be left on for protection from other vehicles and to run the life safety equipment in the vehicle as well as to be able to promptly leave the scene to transport victims. Most ambulances have security overrides that allow you to remove the keys from the ignition while leaving the engine running. If anyone gets into an ambulance while it is in security override and applies brake pressure to shift gears the engine automatically shuts off.
