Just 2 hours ago Hawaii Mars C-FLYL made its last ever flight and landing at Pat Bay Victoria. Henry Tenby of JetFlix is one of the few people to have flown on the Martin Mars Hawaii Mars air tanker flying boat, and he filmed the entire experience using two TV broadcast quality cameras. This video shows and explains how this amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity came to be when the aircraft came to Vancouver Coal harbour in January of 2008. It is probable that this TV broadcast quality video is the most unique onboard LIVE footage ever filmed about this amazing air tanker. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the piston pounding flight!
Join Henry Tenby for YVR Live Stream airport action from the beautiful Vancouver International Airport.

I got to see the Martin Mars up close fighting a fire at a lumber mill back sometime between 1997-99 in Port Alberni. I climbed up on a railway car on a siding and watched as the Mars came straight at me. When it dumped its load of sea water on the fire I could feel the spray as it passed by me and went back for more water in Alberni Inlet. I will never forget that day!!

For those complaining about “Video quality” please remember he explained it was all recorded in 2008 at the Loggers Convention so that’s what equipment produced in those days. Also, complaints about inability to understand those voices spoken by pilots & air traffic . . . Sounded about normal to me . . . As long as the pilot understands what is said is all that matters.

If you are a radial engine fanatic, then you need to purchase Henry Tenby's "Martin Mars, Visit to Richmond 2010. I purchased this DVD back in 2013, and for me, it still sets the standard when it comes to the power and nuances of the Martin Mars radial engine sounds. Note that this DVD was filmed from the exterior, not from the aircraft's interior. Still, for me, the radial engine sounds on this DVD are the bomb!

Roy Copeland is sitting at my father’s desk.
My Dad was her flight engineer in the early 1950’s. He was stationed out on Oahu where I was born in ‘52. He was an Aviation Machinists Mate, Chief Petty Officer. At that time the job was weather observation on what was called the “Weather Triangle” They flew from Hawaii to Adak, Alaska, the to Alameda, Calif., then back to Honolulu. About 18 hours per leg. He was very proud of his time with her as the final duty of his 28 years in the Navy.

Ray sat at that desk for many decades. The plane is steeped in aviation history back to WWII. This was truly the end of the flying boat era on planet earth. We got to witness it last week, and in my case back in 2008. It is hard to believe.

I would say every news reporter in Canada would’ve been interested in being on board. They would’ve had a list with 1000 names on it. But the aircraft isn’t certified to carry passengers so the chances of getting on it are essentially impossible. I am curious about total time on the a/c when it completed the flight?
I am also curious about total time in the aircraft by each crew member -- any idea?

There is a part the Captain was talking about their annual training but no mention of total hours ... it would be great to get that detail :)

I do not know but this is a great question. Maybe someone will chime in with knowledge of this topic.

Me too .. I guess in January of 2008 when I filmed this .. HD was either non existent or very new and costly.

this is such a travesty, i hope that there will still be another type of large civil old school planes that will be flying like the pby catalina

I totally agree .. If they can make the aircraft air worthy like they just did, I agree they should keep it at least in engine running condition. To to put it to mothballs doesn’t seem to make sense. Specially, for our aviation fans.

@@JetFlixYou might want to avoid Peter Killin’s comments like I should have. He confirmed my thoughts as it flew overhead at Patricia Bay yesterday. He said “Flying her, it felt like she wanted to work”. 😢

Imho there lies behind the veil of what we’re allowed to see and know the REAL story why this machine was taken out of service in 2015 and now put into permanent retirement. And it’s not just all about “the cost” or being competitive.

Gosh I have no idea, maybe Coulson did not “know” the right people in government. The ages old biblical problem of “there came a new Pharoh who knew not Joseph”.

Good show, so i TOLD NASA and Space X to contact you about the plane, as the plane could be the oldest known plane that has flown for over 50 yrs, something with that kind of credibility and knowledge should not be discounted.

Thank you so much Cheryl I very much appreciate your kindness and enthusiasm and support. Only if everybody was as kind as you. I’m glad you enjoyed my video. Yes this is a very special plane and I’m so appreciative that I was able to film it for a flight. Wishing you all the best.

In 2008 there was no such thing as HD let alone 4K. I filmed this with 2 professional broadcast quality video cameras that the TV stations used at the time … so this was the highest quality that was available for the era. I think that the fact that it was a live filming onboard the Mars, with live audio filmed on board the Martin Mars, which is 100% unique as far as I’m aware, is the more important factor than it not being of 2024 video technology..
