  • This video was produced specifically for people new to 3d printing looking for their first printer. I review the specifications, unbox, set-up and test the Monoprice MP Select Mini 3D Printer (v2). Along the way, I explain a number of basic 3d printing concepts including a discussion of the types of materials (filaments) supported by 3d printers.
    As a point of reference, the MP Select Mini is compared to the Creality Ender 5 and the Original Prusa i3 MK3.
    While no one should expect a printer I purchased fully assembled for $180 functions, as well as a $320 Creality Ender 5 or a $750 Original Prusa i3 MK3, is it reasonable to expect that a printer sold by a major brand such as Monoprice should be functional.
    There are quite a number of the printers for under $200, what differentiates the MP Select Mini is that comes fully assembled and calibrated, ready to print.
    Enjoy the video.

    Very useful, thank you very much! I have just purchased one of these as it was on sale and the Ender 3 V2 is just a lot more set-up (I would have wanted to get an enclosure sorted too for printing more interesting filaments but I already have too many projects on the go).
    This one will be a nice place to start and learn the basics before moving onto a more involved/better printer.

    Nice video. You show how easy it was to setup and run this printer. I was confused by other videos since I am new and just followed the manual. My cat fully printed with the supplied filament and it was well done. It had a few artifacts that came off with a sharp knife. I've built plastic models and soldiers and most of them had some flash that has to be removed. I agree that this is a nice intro to 3D printing. I enjoy your videos and subscribed.

    Thanks for your videos. I picked one of these up for $120 on Amazon. I am having mixed results. Some prints work, some don’t. I am trying Prusa slicer instead of Cura. I suppose for the price 50 percent success rate is something I have to live with.

    just an FYI: The device that he calls the "extruder" is actually the hotend. The extruder is the motor and device that actually pushes (or pulls, in direct drive) the filament

      This printer is very easy to use and will print PLA well. The primary limitation is the size of the print bed and it is a bit slow.
      I recommend using it with MatterControl plugged directly into your computer is an excellent way to get started. Here is a video about MatterControl. This is free software that combines a design program, slicer and printer control program into one application that runs on both windows and mac.

      @@MakeWithTech Thanks for the reply. After much research and decision making, I found that for only $40 more I could get the Ender 3 Pro. I know that if I got the Mini I would eventually want to upgrade to a larger printer (thus more expense). I've had many years of 3D CAD experience and mechanically minded so I think I'll be OK. I'll keep watching your videos and others to keep learning. I'm excited to be starting this new adventure. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, it is much appreciated. Let's learn things together!

  • @zerocool1344
    @zerocool1344 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Truth is you can adjust the speeds, but any 3D printers you would want a slow print for quality. So really doesn't matter. This will print a 5in cube basically, and that perfect for people wanting to start, and see if this is worth your time.

    • @MakeWithTech
      @MakeWithTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment. Here is what I have observed.
      I own 9 different 3d printers. As you move up the price range the components have better specifications and the architectures are more sophisticated. This supports printing at higher speeds with the same quality as lower end printers at slower speeds.

    Dr Shapiro I recently got the the same monoprice select and it was working great out of the box. Then the side walls of the print outs changed. They are soft and the spacing does look as close or the temperature looks like it's not high enough but the base is fine of the same print out. The side walls break. What do you think is the problem? Thanks

    • @MakeWithTech
      @MakeWithTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It should do five but it is quite slow.
      If you are comfortable assembling a kit one of the Creality Ender printers will be faster and will allow you to print larger objects in the future.
      If your not sure you want to get into 3D printer start with the mini select and you can add a second printer in the future.

    can it print TPU with out modifications?

    • @MakeWithTech
      @MakeWithTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. Because the Select Mini Bowden tube is really short, if you increase the temperature a bit and print slow, lets say 30mm/sec, it works great for traditional TPU. Not sure it can do super soft TPU like Nijaflex, but generic TPU like the SainSmart stuff works fine for me.
