I love it when you speed up the words and phrases like how a native Chinese speaker would! It really helps me to prepare myself to listen out for those more "slurred" type words. Thank you SOO much!

My daughter in law is from Chongqin. She lives with my son in Holland, the Netherlands, Her son, nearly 5 speaks Chinese. I trie to learn it. I manage to understand and speak a bit and can sing Chinese children's songs. Thanks for your free lesson's! I recognize a lot! I am Dutch and a French teacher and until now I haven't visited China because of my health problems.
However I want to say one thing about making small talks in Mandarin. In Holland a coffeeshop is a place where you can buy soft drugs like haschisch and eventually drink a coffee. To drink a coffee you can go to a coffeehouse or tearoom or to a brasserie or even to a bar.

Well Katrina, you are doing a great job. Almost reaching the level of the Pimsleur's method. Great !
I have read most of the comments here under and confirm you are top notch !
Do you know why ? Each specific word is explained on a litteral basis and in the same time you give the contextual meaning. This is very important for beginners, doing so you help them get (and easily keep in mind) the original source of the word and the interpretation in a common conversation.
My mother language being French, Chinese is the sixth language I am actually learning.
From my modest experience I would like to share this with you : you might want to exercise a "graduated interval recall" of the new words you teach us. This hammers in our memory the freshly new learned words. This method is really effective as it recall the words the words after 5 seconds, 5 minutes, 5 days ...
And If I may, i would like to ask you to talk just a little slower when pronouncing the new words or the words explaining the new word.
In any case, you are and stay top noth ! Keep on !
And thanks again for the quality of your nature !

For me this are one of the most helpful lessons at the beginning. We can all look up works ourselves in the dictionary but there are always several options (especially in Chinese its very overwhelming..) and as a beginner you have no idea how to use them or which word is the right register in each situation...

    With respect to lao zhi...
It's NOT TRUE that we don't care whether a person has eaten or not when we asked "Che pow le ma..?"
It's just illogical and senseless to form such a cultural Q and modernly translate/write it off as simply a "hello and how are you, I don't really care " thing.
That phrase has its purpose and often can lead to an invitation for the listener to join the speaker for a meal or the listener could reply "hai mei Che, yao ee chi Che ma.? (haven't eaten yet, wanna eat together .?)
    Keep up the good work...

Is there a particular time of day when you would say “chi baole ma” I was thinking it should be said around lunchtime or after lunch. Am I wrong?

    • @smartmandarinkatrinalee
      @smartmandarinkatrinalee  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

"chi bao le ma" is just a way to say hi, because long time ago people are poor and don't have much thing to eat, so asking "chi bao le ma" is a sign of showing your concern to other's well-being, it's a big old-fashion to me personally. My mom says it all the time and even during like 4 pm in the afternoon...haha))) So to answer your question, it's better to ask around meal time, but it's also fine saying anytime of a day...just a bit weird to young people. ( not weird to older generations ) 😀
