I can't get my mammoth build on my desk and have room for monitors on my desk so I bought a long 2x4 and cut it into pieces to build a stand to get my PC up off the ground and also give it room to ventilate. Even a few inches up off the ground though I get a ton of dust. I bought a duster and have to dust it out every couple weeks. Great video. Thanks for making it.

I have to agree. I have a corsair 800D with 720mm worth of rads. the weight alone would crush most desks. This case is 22 inches high and 24 inches long as well as 8 inches thick. it's just too darn big to put on a desk.

I've told people the same thing for years, and for one major reason: Flood damage. I've seen machine after machine damaged because a pipe broke, or a drain clogged, etc. Sometimes, just a few inches away from the floor is enough to avoid this.

Not sure about the rest of the US, but my family is constantly in and out of the house for projects, errands, or running to the store. It’s just a hassle to be taking our shoes on and off every time we enter or leave the house. We also don’t really have the space to dedicate an area for shoes near the doors as any spot would either not allow the door to open or be directly in the way of people walking. But that’s just cause we have a smaller house. Other reasons being we don’t have guests over. Like ever. So we’re not concerned with how it looks. That goes doubly so because our floors hide dirt and dust SUPER well so it never really looks dirty in the first place

@@sarius2388 well lucky for us we don’t actually go anywhere except for doing projects on our property, and our dog is big enough to where if you did step in her poop, you’d KNOW it. We got four people in a 700 sq ft house. The back door has cabinets on either side right up to it, and the front we don’t use because it’s blocked by a fold out couch which is out 99% of the time due to the differing schedule of the person who sleeps there. There’s about 2 1/2 feet of clearance from the door to the bed, so the door can’t open all the way, and about five feet on the other side is my brothers computer setup. We could leave our shoes outside but we live in Seattle where half the year it rains and there’s nothing that would protect the shoes.

Most of the reasons you have listed are personal reasons. I agree the reasons are a bit disappointing. I was actually really wanting to get my PC on my desk but there's absolutely no space for it there or anywhere else than where its currently at really. So was looking into smaller/ITX mobo's and cases but they turn out to be damn expensive/hard to get second hand, so sadly went back to planning for ATX/µATX form factor & subsequently floor. Why I like having case next to the table (not under it):
    1. More workspace on desktop or more space for monitors or speakers
    2. Less audible noise (especially coil whine noise)
    3. More safe, stable and protected position, it can't fall from the table especially during earthquakes
    4. Easier cable management, less visible cables from side view
    5. No annoying (rgb) leds during night time

    • @pirx9798
      @pirx9798 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Some valid reasons indeed. I have my 2 PCs on the floor for the simple reason #1, not having enough space on the desk for them together with the monitors. So I have to keep them under the table. I have placed them onto wooden boxes to give them some elevation over the floor. I'd like to have them above, but basically I'd need a second table and there is not enough room for that.

I’ll be considering how best to elevate my pc, thanks Paul.
One other benefit I think went unmentioned: cable management. Having cables running from desk to floor is harder to get done tidily, and any loose cables trailing on the floor really help rack up those dust bunnies and make cleaning more work when you end up having to move them out of the way to vacuum…

Never had a dust issue for the most part as I clean my PCs on a regular basis at least twice a year (but even then it's not any significant amount of dust anyway). On the contrary - because there will always be colder air closer to the floor, the huge advantage is having colder air intake, which in its turn, is obviously beneficial to cooling.

PC is on the floor (on a little inox steel cart with proper cut outs for airflow). I don't have space on any of my desks.
Dust is a non issue as there aren't carpet floors, clean and vacuum the room once a week, clean the dust filters monthly or bi-monthly and de dust the whole thing after every season. And I have 2 cats.
I say seasons, as I basically have a summer build underground and a winter one in my room (which is under the roof xD).
No issue with glass side panels as I use and will keep using my old solid panel cases.. fractal arc midi and define R4. So not much pride or RGB to show anything off to myself or to anybody..
But yeah, for overseas or northern EU countries where carpets are still a thing.. you should definitely move them off the floor. But I never had any PC that cluttered of thick dust as I see on the internet.. but those aren't just because they are on the floor or carpet, it's because they don't clean a thing!

I've tested a pc on the floor vs off the floor, and my pc gets way more dusty on my desk, then on my floor (over 6 months) I presume because heat rises, so dust floats in the air more, and being on my desk, my pc is being exposed to it non stop.
When its on my floor, there isnt much dust past the front grill. A small bit on the magnetized dust collector behind, and a very light dropping on the fans, and same for inside (cooler, gpu etc.)
When its on the desk, my grill is coated after 6 months, the dust colllector inside need to be thrown in the sink, and I have to go inside, and give my pc a deep clean...the fans blowing out through the top, take the biggest beating.
On a sidenote: I was surprised that floor was better than desk... I live in New England (N.H.) so air quality is probably different from Mr. Paul.

What I'm trying to say is I don't spend money on making it look good, so I'd rather hide it under the desk. I built my own PC in 2015 (third time actually) and it has been on a carpeted floor for two reasons: 1. The case is huge, and has the power and other buttons on the top, so if it were up on my desk I'd have to stand up to interact with the controls, usb ports, etc. 2. My computer desk is very narrow, only room for my 32" monitor, speakers, keyboard, and mouse. It has a pull-out shelf down below but my case is too tall to fit under there on the shelf, and that would only get it maybe 5 inches off the floor and I wouldn't be able to access the aforementioned buttons.
On the bright side, it's in a nice spot to the left of my desk where anyone can admire it even from standing in the doorway of the room, and the case itself has rather large feet that lift it a couple of inches off the floor, and I haven't noticed much dust accumulation, even after weeks or months of use. It has very large fans and plenty of ventilation. In the future I may try to get it up higher though, now that you've explained all the reasons.

I guess it's still physically possible to kick it if I lost control of my body but I wouldn't care about the PC if I were convulsing. No pets and I dust every week. I do still blow quite a bit of dust out of the front filter when I clean it once per month so you got me there. All valid points but I will keep my PC on the floor.

My PC sits up on the desk, but I've been considering setting it on the floor just to make room for midi-keyboard and my native instruments Kontrol Z1. This is no longer an option I'm considering. I really do like the aesthetic reasoning, as well. I love seeing my PC up on the desk and being able to admire the components through the tempered glass.

I have seen your videos before but the hilarity and common sense of this one combined to make me SUBSCRIBE! Excellent content that was not only informative but cracked me up!

I got my first desktop PC today. I don't have a lot of space and I don't have a monitor, so I have to use my TV for the time being. This means I had to put the PC on the floor in order to get it close enough for the hdmi. I then started looking up tips for where to put your PC for best air flow and I found this video.
My PC now sits on my waist high book shelf and I'm going to make a complete mess of my interior decorating to get the TV and the couch closer to the PC.
My point is; you convinced me so thoroughly that I didn't even feel comfortable leaving the PC on the floor when it seemed to be the only option. I value my PC more than I value having a home that doesn't scream "a schizö decorated this apartment".
*TL;DR:* you convinced me to place my PC upp off of the floor. Thank you.

You have some good point and I agree with most things which were said but most of the stuff is type specific.
These days you get pc´s which were partly designed to be on the floor because they are too heavy or because the fans allow it as some pc´s push the air in from the top , aside from that they can also look nice on the floor if you give it some effort and decorade your setup properly, but it´s true that they catch more dust on the floor due to gravity and the tiny negative pressure created by the fans most of the time, but all that can be avoided with good housekeeping an 1-2 cleanings scheduled over the year.
Although I find it wrong to say Computers must be off the floor.
Both variations have pros and cons.

Just removed a full dust bunny from the case and yeah, you've convinced me. Don't really have room on the desk, but it looks like I have about 8" clearance under for a riser... looking for a creative solution for a riser platform.

Great video that absolutely needed to be made, and I'm a desk PC guy... but just for fun, what about a monthly build for the "if you absolutely must keep it on the floor" PC?
I'm thinking a case with top-to-bottom airflow pattern so that dust form the ground is blown away, solid (kickable) side panel, easily cleanable dust filters and pressure-optimised fans to pull through a dusty filter, case shape uncomfortable for cats to sleep on...
Would be interesting to see the precautions it takes to negate the non-aesthetic part of your 1-5 list and the long-term performance cost (if any) versus the same PC on a desk.

Shortly after just seeing this video, yesterday, I have put my pc on my desk and I'm very happy with the way it looks now. Thank you Paul for the indirect "shamming" you did to me.

I have always kept my PC on my desk, until I started my new job. Now I have 3 laptops and 2 monitors (with 2 more on the way) that take up the entirety of my desk space. I thought nothing of it, so I moved it to the floor. You’ve convinced me, though, so I will be moving my desk space around after work to get my tower off the floor

Additional solution (similar to one mentioned): I build in 4U chassis and use the StarTech RK419WALLV to mount them on the wall. They have pre-drilled holes that are 16in on center for fastening directly to wall studs.

You know, when Paul was talking about kids it brought to mind a time when a friend wanted me to look at their computer that they kept on the floor and when I opened it I found a considerable amount of shredded cheese inside the PC that was apparently introduced by their toddler who discovered an uncovered expansion slot on the back of the case.
