    The thing I love about musical theatre is that everyone plays their roles differently. However, the thing I love about this musical specifically is that there is no guidebook to playing Erik (the Phantom.) There are so many different versions of the character, and each one has many of its own traits and quirks.
    I love how everyone who plays the role of Phantom does it COMPLETELY differently, always choosing to represent a different part of the character. That's why I truly believe that there has never been a bad Phantom.
    In this particular version, I think the qualities that Earl really drove home were the fear the Phantom felt, and his love and care for Christine. Erik is terrified of losing Christine-- if he wasn't, the musical would be about 20 minutes long. Early portrayed this fear in a way I've never seen-- rather than being possessive or controlling of Christine, he was kind and compassionate.
    A beautiful recording. Thank you so much for sharing :)

      I agree. Fear and pain. He is a nervous Phantom, with quick reactions and deep pain in his gestures. And so much hope and fear in his eyes. Really unique acting, I cant believe it took me so long to see him playing Erik.

    Never seen Earl play Phantom. My goodness, the man can act! That last scene was probably the most heartbreaking version I’ve seen. When he was racing got her hand thinking she came back to be with him and realizing she didn’t when she didn’t extend her hand back😭.

  • @karenpinson759
    @karenpinson759 3 ปีที่แล้ว +96

    He is becoming one of my favorite Phantoms. His voice is fine, but not as forceful or as operatic as I would prefer. However, his acting is superb! The tenderness with how he treats her. The opposites: his desire to touch/caress her then pushes her away then gently draws her back. When he rocks her in his arm with the line "sweet intoxication" is usually acted by other Phantoms as if he is referring to her respose to Phantom's song, but Earl puts his hand to his own face as a reference that Christine's nearness is such joy that he feels overwhelmed/intoxicated by her. Not too many Phantoms have played it that way except maybe Huge Panaro. These touches make Earl's interpretation absolutely awesome. Coupled with Rachel's acting, these two are amazing together.

    • @HearthandhomeASMR
      @HearthandhomeASMR 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I LOVE this and you're absolutely right - it's like he comes to the conclusion that she should touch his face in the moment after he says "sweet intoxication" and then his fear pushes her away. His interpretation in MOTN is so sweet and timid. I also feel like his "turn your face away" is more natural than some phantoms who perform it like they're performing choreography vs. reacting to her in the moment. You really get a sense of the internal battle with his phantom!

    2:00:27 I love how they acted this...I also love how he falls to his knees during this part, don’t see that often, and try’s to give her the ring. For a brief second you can see her reach towards it, it seems. So moving and my heart breaks for him at that moment.

I wish more people would recognise what a fantastic Christine she was. It’s funny because I’ve been a Phan since 2009 and remember she was one of the most popular/acclaimed Christine’s at that time. Unfortunately since “Rierra” became a thing a lot of the formerly popular Christine’s from before then have become underrated in favour of Sierra and a bunch of newer Christine’s. It’s a pity. There are a lot of other good Christine’s and they all deserve love.

If they were ever to have a pro-shot recording deal, then they missed a great opportunity in not releasing it already. It’s not going to put people off going to the theatre. If anything, It is a great system and I’m thankful for women leaving cookies to cool.

    I was lucky to meet Earl back when he, JOJ and Matthew Camelle were performing The Three Phantoms Concert. I was one of about 3 people waiting at the stage door (the others left quite quickly) and Earl was so lovely, such a gentleman....all three of them were....in fact, I remember Earl kind of sensing that I was hoping to see JOJ (I love all three, of course but JOJ is my favourite Phantom) and he said, "don't worry he'll be here soon"....and then..."here he is". ....I can't remember what he said to John now...but I remember I made them all laugh 😂... because I just looked at JOJ and said....."I LOVE YOU" 😂...and OMG... I was so embarrassed because that's not something I tend to say even if I meet someone who I admire in case they feel uncomfortable....but we just all laughed 😂 and they chatted with me for a good 20 minutes. It's one of my favourite theatre experiences to this day. Earl is so charming, incredibly kind and quite handsome when you see him up close.... lovely, lovely man. 🌹

I'm not surprised to hear that his high notes improved though, with enough training the vocal range can be improved (within reason). I hope he continues to choose suitable roles so he doesn't strain his voice!

      The problem I have noticed with most phantoms, and maybe it's a direction issue, is that Phantom's strangeness/awkwardness is shown but not the musician/vocal director side. The character is Christine's vocal coach and as such would tend to use his arms and hands in that sort of way more. This particular rendition utilizes that side of the character, which resonates far more effectively, in my view. Other phantoms tend to appear "wooden" in this scene, to my eye.

    • @brxzbze

      @@charlenekravec1461 I agree. Not a fan of the performances where he doesn't seem as, er, musically inclined. I know it's technically already written in, but some of the phantoms don't really play into that aspect of the character -- or it just seems like they're going through the motions, trying to make them as smooth or showy as possible, without making them seem purposeful. It probably is a direction issue, and I'm probably being harsh, but...

    • @charlenekravec1461
      @charlenekravec1461 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brxzbze No, you're not, in my opinion, being harsh. In my view, a good director reads and studies the script to "know" each character in order to "flesh them out". Unfortunately, there are those who cannot or will not do so. They give the "highlights" of the character and what they think the audience will be drawn to. This can leave a lot of gaps in a performance, unless the actor is allowed to pick up the slack, if willing and able to do so.

    • @brxzbze

      @@charlenekravec1461 In all fairness, I have heard some not- so- good things about some of the past resident directors of this show, though I hesitate to judge as I don't know about the specific details of the creative process taken by this show.
      I'm an aspiring amateur director myself, though, so I probably do tend to look at these things more, but I really agree with your points anyway. I think many of the portrayals of characters in longer running shows seem to fall into this same trap, where the director (and to a lesser extent the actor, if they don't put more in) relies on the previous reputation and general perception of how the character should be, and plays into that too much without examining the text as is. Not to put anybody down, of course -- it's a difficult industry.

    Ramin is the best singer
    Ben Lewis is a combination of both

      I disagree about Ramin being the best singer tbh. He’s got a good instrument but it’s also kind of generic and flawed on a technical level. I actually must prefer him in LND because he suits the soundtrack a lot better - and it masks the flaws he has - IMO.
      Also Ben Lewis is okay, he’s not one of my favourites either. Personally I’d have put Ramin in the LND recording with Claire Lyon or Sierra (thought Anna was a bit boring tbh) and somebody like Earl or JoJ in the 25th - with a Christine and Raoul that have actually been on the West End!

      I get what you're saying about Christine, but I'm also torn because I struggle to find a Christina apart from Sierra who I enjoy. For me, the person playing Christine tends to be the weak link for some reason...

    • @brxzbze
      @brxzbze 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@melissam597 To be absolutely fair to Ramin, I do enjoy a lot of his phrasing choices even if his technical ability sometimes compromises his ability to follow through with the choice. He has a naturally good head voice and the tonal change between his belting voice and his head is clear but also smooth. I also do think he does pull it back in in a lot more places than people think, as I've seen a lot of people say he just screams everything which I think is a generally inaccurate description of what he does (this is going by the RAH recording, and another bootleg I watched online). In MOTN, he does emphasise the right words and softens when he needs to, especially at the end of phrases. However, during longer or stronger belts (also evident in MOTN) he tends to strain or tighten by doing vibrato (and that's why people say he gets pitchy), even if again I think his vibrato timing/and usage is generally solid, uh, phrasing decision- wise.
      My issue with him in LND is he doesn't seem to switch his vocal tones around as much and tends to only belt things, but then I'm not too familiar with that recording.
      (he also doesn't do it as often nowadays and tends to belt a lot more from what I've seen of his recent work. I think he needs to go back to singing Phantom or some similar show where the singer has to switch often between vocal tones. Although his vocal control in terms of belting is a bit better now I think he's sacrificed a bit in tone variety)
      I still find him more interesting to listen to than a lot of Phantoms who have little phrasing but good (if imperfect) vocal control, and I do really like his instrument (mostly because of its strong separation between head and chest voice which allows a lot of tonal variety) though I _definitely_ wouldn't say he's a perfect, or even very technically solid singer or anything. He has good instincts though and I think he needs to go back to basics haha
      Sorry about the slight rant...
