Greatest live act in rock & roll history- The Who!! Absolute command of the stage and just an electrifying spectacle to watch and hear. In their prime they were untouchable. In fact, this particular performance wasn’t even released for over 25 years because The Rolling Stones were so embarrassed by the fact that The Who blew them off their own stage and stole the show! 🎸💥

Man, your smile says it all! Every one in The Who played “lead”… lead vocals, lead guitar, lead bass, and lead drums! Everyone out front 100% of the time.
Also, the guitarist wanted to write a ten minute song. At the time, it was unheard of. So he wrote 5, two minute songs with the same theme and stuck them together. The genius thing for me is that they wanted to add cellos but couldn't afford them. Hence, they sing repeatedly, "cello, cello, cello..." where the instrument should be. Brilliant.
One of my favorite live performances ever... That's cool you recognized the drummer was special, he was one of the best to ever do it.
The story goes that the Who were asked to perform at a Rolling Stones Circus. The Who’s performance was so good & blew the Stones away. The Stones decided to not release it The Who are known to be one of the best stage acts. they are in the guinness book of world records- The Who are in there for being the loudest band. When the Who got the loudest band record i was there 1974 Charlton Football ground You could hear hem at Tower Bridge which is about 4 miles away
The story goes:
The Who had just returned from a world tour and where on their A game and the stones hadn't played live for 18 months so hence the disparity in quality of their respective performances.
No the loudest band is still Spinal Tap.
That, to me is the finest piece of live rock n roll ever recorded. The Who were home off the back of a tour and firing on all cylinders. The Rolling stones much to their chagrin never released it until 1996 - it was recorded in 1968. Eddie vedder and My Morning Jacket played this live... about 7 or 8 of them on stage. Goes to show how effective and organized The Who were.

The Who = the GOAT live rock band. Controlled chaos. This was a sweet starter since they got to hit a lot of their tricks, but it was just 1968; they got _better_ . Try the live 1978 vid of "Won't Get Fooled Again" or the studio version of "Who Are You" for more!
I absolutely agree with your first sentence. No one could touch these guys live, even in the late '90's and early '00's up until John Entwistle died. I remember seeing them a few times in 2000 and being absolutely blown away by how great they were. And they were having so much fun up there, it was infectious! It was such a shame that John died so young, because they were BACK again: no thirty other musicians up onstage with them, watering down the sound, no Pete on acoustic and Simon on electric, etc. It was just Pete, Roger, John, Zak Starkey and John "Rabbit" Bundrick on keys. I saw them with Pino Palladino on bass not long after John died (September of '02, I believe), and it was just so sad. They didn't sound remotely as good as before, and the band also seemed (understandably) depressed and in low spirits. Saw them again in '19...it was ok, tickets were only twenty bucks and my buddy dragged me along, but the whole time all I could hear was the gaping hole in the sound that John left behind.
What a great piece as an introduction to The Who. Even better, You g Man Blues from their Live at Leeds album. Sick, sick, sick!
Magic Bus from the same gig is also an absolute belter
The original Live at Leeds was described by some as the best live rock album to that point -- and it had just six tracks. A greatly expanded version issued years later was even better because it added multiple tracks. Epic.
Live at Leeds is no good and the band agrees... Doesn't take away your enjoyment of it, but the Isle of Wight was a better performance

The drummer, Keith Moon, is considered one of the 10 best drummers of all time. In fact, all four group members are listed in the top ranks lists of drummer, bassist, guitarist, and vocalist, one of the very few bands that can boast that feat (Rush or The Police would be a couple others).
Dude--I love Rush, but Geddy isn't a top10 vocalist.

Great reaction!! I saw the Kids are Alright (this footage is in the movie) when I was 12 (back in 1979) and that was it for me, I HAD to play the drums after that. I had never seen anything like Keith Moon… before or since. The Who has an amazing catalog and are one of the all time greats.

Gotta see The Who at Woodstock - they were the loudest band (record 120db Charlton Stadium, 1976) for the time and most intense band possibly ever!! Keith Moon was 100% nuts, Roger Daltrey got fired from the band for fighting and actually knocked out Pete Townshend one time.
He was thrown out for beating up Moonie. He flushed Moon's bag of pills down the toilet and Moon went at him, which is a bad idea because Rog was a street fighter. Moon ended up in the hospital adn Roger was thrown out of the band (because Moon was the pill supplier for the other guys).
Word is, The Who overshadowed the other acts with this performance. Watch The Who-My Generation on the Smothers Brothers show.
keith bribed a stage hand on the Smothers Brothers show, to overpack the gunpowder in his drumkit. it is one of those "you have to see it to understand" kind of things.
That drummer was Keith Moon, probably the most legendary drummer in all of rock history.
The Who are great. This is one of their most underrated song.

3 things you gotta keep in mind bruvv,
1. What you just witnessed is hands down the greatest British rock drummer who ever existed, Keith Moon (other than Bonzo).
2. The Rolling Stones were upset and in the original screening of this film, they considered removing The Who's performance because it slaughtered everyone else's sets
3. Pete Towsend (the guirarist) composed 3 rock operas ALL on his own. And he's the very first person ever (in rock) to popularize smashing instruments on stage.

the who are so good! they where pretty crazy for their time. Sometimes they would just smash up all their gear after the song and go crazy. One time keith moon (the drummer) wanted to put some cherry bombs in his bass drum and set them off at the end of the live tv show, but he put waaaay too much in there and ended up blowing the hole drum away, a cymbal flew off and hit someone and everyone wasnt almost deaf. The presenter of the show was soo lowkey pissed but kept on with the show

One of the greatest live rock and roll bands of all time - with Keith Moon (the loon) the drummer, one of top rock and roll drummers of all time. Additionally, Keith Moon kind of defined the rock and roll lifestyle with just one of the weirdest, funniest most party filled and also tragic short lives in rock and roll history. Other legendary hellraisers would spend a night or two with him, and have to recover for weeks.
Daltrey figured out the optical illusion of lassoing the mic early on. His trademark.

Who are they?! "Four nice blokes from Shepherd's Bush, London" (this is how they were introduced on stage back in those days)...and i could add that they were a force of the nature as anyone can hear and watch.
This was filmed in 1968 for a movie called The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus. But The Who's segment was so amazing that Mick Jagger (rightfully) felt like it was better than the Stones's segment, so the movie didn't come out until the 1990s. The first time the world saw and heard this performance was in the fan biopic of The Who called The Kids Are Alright, which came out in 1979.
The Who were spectacular. Pete Townshend (the guitarist) is god (and wrote everything). And Keith Moon (drummer) was pure rock and roll in human form. This band is legendary. Glad you saw this clip as your first intro....it's everything.
My brother in law and sister's first date was to see The Who at Boston's Music Hall in 1973. They were promoting the "Quadrophenia", which I strongly recommend you listen to.

A Quick One.was a mini Opera, which was 4 or 5 regular length songs that tell one short story. They had 10 minutes to fill on the album so their co-manager, Kit Lambert, came up with the idea of the mini Opera. 2 years later they made Tommy, the very first full length Rock Opera.
The performance was from a tv special in England The Rolling Stones Rock N Roll Circus. It ran in theaters but was pulled by The Rolling Stones because they felt that The Who had blown them away. It came out in video in 1996.
Their drummer Keith Moon died in 1978 after overdosing on barbiturates that were prescribed to combat his alcoholism. They were never the same after that. They replaced Moon with Kenny Jones from The Faces after Phil Collins offered to join. Jones played on Who Are You when Moon was too drunk to perform.
My brother in law and sister went to see them again, this time at Boston Garden in 1976 but Moon fell from a barstool and couldn't perform so they had to postpone it. When they did the make up show they did Tommy because the movie Tommy was still in theaters.
This is from the 1968 film Rock and Roll Circus which was produced by the Rolling Stones. The Rolling Stones refused to release this film for over 20 years as they didn't want to show them being upstaged by The Who.

Not sure if someone has already mentioned the movie The Kids Are Alright. You will get a front/ center seat to their craziness. I saw them 3 times after Keith (drummer) had passed already. It was crushing not to see him play but every show, for me, was as good as this performance. Keep Rockin'.✌🖖

"A Quick One While He's Away" is also known as The Who's "mini-opera" as a concept piece with a story moving thru several song variations - They did "Tommy" - generally known as "the rock opera" which a movie was made from, not too long after this one -- And it was GOOD to see Brian Jones of the Stones WOOPING it up in the audience at the end - at least he wasn't intimidated like -- "WHO" .............
The drum company loved him though! He was by necessity a repeat customer.

They are always full of energy. Never heard this one. Their crazy though. Again the drummer doesn't get alot of praise , but he's one of the most talented drummers back then and maybe now
"the drummer doesn't get a lot of praise." He's generally talked about as the greatest drummer in rock and roll history. If not, then right up there with whomever people say is #1. Lack of praise for Moon's drumming is not an actual thing.
The *bassist* doesn't get a lot of praise, or at least as much as he deserves. He was, after all, the greatest bassist in all of rock and roll (as far as I'm concerned anyway). The Who eventually found a way to continue being an amazing live band when Zak Starkey came aboard, but there is absolutely no one that can fill the role that Entwistle played in The Who. The band died with him, unfortunately.
You'd have a hard time opening any issue of a drum magazine that didn't have his name in it.
The drummer is the great Keith Moon. There are other drummers who might be as good as Moon was, but there are none who are better. I saw The Who in Baton Rouge, LA in Oct. 1975. That ranks as one of the best rock performances I have ever seen. Moon put on one hell of a show that evening.

Yes there were 4 in the band. The Drummer the Great Keith Monn died in 1978~ The Bassist John Entwhistle died in 2003.

Normally, when you see a close up of the microphone, you'll see it wrapped in gaffer's tape. Without that, the cable would pull right out of the XLR connector in a turn or two.

What an amazing way to first listen to The Who!
The Who have Been around since 1965. British Band, that was perhaps the greatest show in concert of any Rock Band ever. These guys are in the top 3 or 4 All time most popular Bands ever, along with The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin. I'd add the great Jimi Hendrix in the mix as well. So many great songs and albums over a 50-year run, as one of greatest Bands ever.

I've always liked this song (It was a standout on my first ever CD), but it's a weird introduction to The Who. The drummer is generally considered the 2nd greatest rock drummer, and I could argue he's number one, but the guy on the base, John Entwistle is overwhelmingly considered the best. Keith Moon was their Drummer. He was absolutely nuts! No matter what he did, he had to it better, and harder than anyone else. That is what finally killed him. Keith was so intense, and funny as Hell. He just went overboard when it came to partying, and drugs and booze. He died of an overdose of Booze and drugs. Sounds Familiar doesn't it. Actors, artists, and musicians have a tenancy to need to self- medicate, because of the pressure of being in the public eye or whatever, it's nothing new to being a celebrity.
Actually he overdosed on heminevrin which was a drug prescribed to treat his alcoholism, as he'd had the dts previously, and his wild partying ways were catching up to him in a big way. It's doubly tragic that he died from the treatment he was taking to try and fix his lifestyle.

Keith Moon is in my opinion the number one drummer. There is a reason they called him Moon the Loon.
