Cuz people like using whatever they can in their emotional fits against certain SCOTUS rulings. The Dobbs decision saw Kavanaugh's home get doxxed. The AA decision saw all the scandals around Clarence Thomas pop up. And now the whole bs with the upside down flag pops up around Alito cuz of the recent South Carolina ruling.

Why do you think it would matter if a judge with no boss or anyone to answer to, who is presiding over one of the most important cases in the history of any democracy, shouldn’t be seen with any sort of symbolism that is identified with illiberal radicals?
It isn't, but the media is using propaganda to get the country to believe that SCOTUS is somehow illegitimate because Justices exercise their freedom of speech. It actually IS an ethics question - judges are NOT supposed to display their personal opinions since they are ruling (without any "favor" supposedly) on cases that relate to these flags. This is a bedrock principal of democracy and fairness.

I have a very liberal acquaintance who had an upside down flag on her Prius. 😂 This was before the insurrection, and I assumed it was a commentary on the unstable political climate and, I’m sure, the Trump presidency.
