What is the "Appeal to Heaven" flag reportedly seen at Alito's vacation home?

  • Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito is under scrutiny after The New York Times reported Alito's home displayed a second flag used by Jan. 6 protesters. The "Appeal to Heaven" flag has been associated with a push for a more Christian-minded government and opposition to left-leaning politicians. Matthew Taylor, senior scholar at the Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies, joins "America Decides" to unpack the flag's history.

      The words Appeal To Heaven come from the writing of John Locke and I would think Justice Alito is smart enough to know that. The full text reads -
      And where the body of the people, or any single man, is deprived of their right, or is under the exercise of a power without right, and have no appeal on earth, then they have a liberty to appeal to heaven, whenever they judge the cause of sufficient moment.

    Not at all clear what the flag represents in this instance, or whether Alito was the household member who chose the flag. (In the real world, to find out you would politely ask the homeowner what he or she *meant* to represent.) The flag predates the Stars and Stripes and has been flown on many different East Coast estates for over 200 years. The fact that a Jan 6 rioter flew one is utterly irrelevant, as you can see numerous American flags in those Jan 6 photos. Should we also associate the American Flag with extremism? Of course not. Because of the constitutional separation of powers, there isn't much the opposition can do when they don't like a Supreme Court ruling. So the opposition resorts to this sort of thing. I can understand why people may not like Justice Alito's or Thomas's rulings. If so, read them carefully, and produce a detailed *legal* critique. Don't drag the Supreme Court into this vacuous political debate. The idea that Alito is "signaling" some sort of solidarity with a present-day right-wing extremist movement is utterly ridiculous. It's a crazy conspiracy theory worthy of Marjorie Greene, or any homeless man suffering from paranoid schizophrenia.

    • @anonyarena
      @anonyarena 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's an issue because of the First Amendment to the Constitution. ""Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
      Those who burn an American flag have a grievance about some US policy or another, and it could be about anything. They burn a flag to express their anger, under their rights of freedom of speech protections, in accordance with the First Amendment.
      To fly an Appeal To Heaven flag, however, is even more extreme, because they want to actually repeal the First Amendment in order to establish a Christian Nation. They do not agree with the part of the First Amendment that says: "no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." They want that overturned so they can get want laws which respect their own sect of Christian Nationalism and which disrespect all other religions, under the "Seven Mountains Mandate." This "Mandate" states that Christians must hold "dominion over" (or in other words dominate) the seven areas of power in American society: 1. family, 2. religion, 3. education, 4. media, 5. arts & entertainment, 6. business, and 7. government. They "Appeal to Heaven" to force that to happen, and that's part of the reason why it was flown at the Jan 6th insurrection. They believe Trump would have helped them to overturn the First Amendment and establish the Christian Nation that Christian Nationalists strive for. It stands for wanting to tear down the wall between Church and State, which would mutate both into something starkly different than what we have now under the U.S. Constitution.

    • @anonyarena
      @anonyarena 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Explain how come you are putting words in my mouth that I never said. I never used the word "dumb" which you put in quotes as if that word came from me. I did use the word "issue," and only because you were the one who used the word "issue" first. You wrote that you didn't understand why this issue was an issue at all. Since you're the one who wrote you didn't understand why it was an "issue," I replied with the reason it's an issue. BUT, if what you actually intended to write was that you didn't agree (rather than understand) that it should be an issue, then you should be the one outlining some sort of valid and understandable reason how come it shouldn't be an issue, instead of just saying you just don't understand why it is an issue. It's an issue because Supreme Court Justices aren't supposed to have conflicts-of-interest. Nor should they be promoting anti-Constitutional values. If they are, that's an issue, because they are the ones who are appointed to these high positions in the Judicial branch to uphold the Constitution. If they, in reality, stand in staunch oppositions the the Constitutional values they swore an oath to Congress to uphold, then that's an issue. And it's not a "Left" nor a "Right" issue! Let's take for example someone as far-Left as the Left can get. If a Supreme Court Justice were flying a Soviet flag or Cuban Communist flag in front of his or her Summer home, you'd want and expect that Supreme Court Justice to recuse him or herself on any cases that come to the Court pertaining to the American Communist Party, wouldn't you?! I certainly know that I absolutely would! So let's not throw red-herrings into it. This is not about what's Left nor Right because Supreme Court Justices are supposed to be obligated to stand apart from and beyond politics. Most especially far-Left and far-Right extremist politics on either side. @Dbusdriver71

    The "Appeal to Heaven" flag, also known as the "Pine Tree Flag," is an early American flag that features a green pine tree with the phrase "An Appeal to Heaven" inscribed above it. This flag holds historical significance and is associated with the American Revolutionary War.
    The pine tree was a common symbol in New England, representing the region's rich forests and the liberty that colonists were seeking.
    An Appeal To Heaven: In the context of the American Revolution, it symbolized the colonists' belief that their cause was just and sanctioned by divine providence.
    Overall, the "Appeal to Heaven" flag is a powerful historical symbol that continues to resonate with themes of liberty, justice, and divine providence.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    A few protesters misused the flag at the Jan 6th event. And so now it has become elevated in significance to a "national disgrace". Why? Because the progressive liberal left wing of the Democratic party wanted to make this a "serious issue" involving a conservative Supreme Court Justice.
    They are very good at throwing the American public "curve balls" on important ethical and moral issues which are hidden in the deep and dark corners of our national fabric and institutions. And of course these types of “important social issues” come up out of nowhere and explode onto the news - due to mainstream media. When they see a potential contentious issue, they all jump in and decry how America is turning a "blind eye" to an important social issue that demands an investigation at the very highest levels of government.
    For reference purposes, San Francisco first raised the Appeal to Heaven flag, which features a green pine tree on a white background with its titular motto, on June 14, 1964. It was located outside city hall. Flag day is celebrated on June 14th of each year.
    The flag was quietly taken down on Saturday 25 May and replaced with an American flag, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle. Why? Because someone just decided that this flag, which for over 200 years has stood for liberty, justice, and divine providence was now a “renegade” flag. No debating the issue. No talking with the American people, if this was now an evil flag. Two hundred years of history… poof, you’re banned, gone. We do live in strange times.

    Not at all clear that Alito espouses the ideas of Dutch Sheets. Although supporters of Dutch Sheets may have chosen to fly the Appeal to Heaven flag for themselves, they are not the *only* group who flies the flag. And they certainly do not determine what the flag "represents" in all cases. Matthew Taylor's explanation of the meaning of the flag for a certain group of "Christian Nationalists" does not necessarily apply to Alito. Nor does Taylor provide any evidence for a connection. Taylor asks, "What is Alito trying to signal?" Maybe it's the "appeal to heaven" line in John Locke's "Two Treatises on Government", but I suspect the correct answer is "not much of anything". But if CBS and Taylor really want to know, why don't they ask Alito? CBS, you can do better than this. In the future I expect responsible, centrist reporting from you

    • @anonyarena
      @anonyarena 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I disagree. THINK about what you are saying. This flag used to represent an "appeal to heaven" to help us liberate ourselves from the unjust rule of King George. But we already ARE liberated from King George in 2024!!! Once that happened, this flag was of interest only in a historical or museum context. Or perhaps for fun for the Revolutionary War battle re-enactors. It was an anachronism; a moot point. Until now! It has now been revived and it symbolizes the overturning of the First Amendment protections of Freedom of Religion to establish a Christian Nation. This isn't 1776 anymore, it's nearly 250 years later. This flag literally has not been flown by anyone for a political reason until Christian Dominionists revived it to symbolize the Seven Mountains Mandate. And yes, Christian Nationalists are the only group who fly that flag in the 2020s as a political statement. Most Americans didn't even know about that flag was, until they started flying it all over again for a different reason than what it originally meant.
      And Congress DID ask Alito! His preposterous answer was "I blame my wife! I'm not fond of flags. She likes them." THAT'S NOT AN ANSWER! The question is not about the flag itself but what it signals. The question was if he supports the Jan 6th insurrection, which was one of the places where that flag was flown. Christian Nationalists flew it at the Jan 6th riot because (for some reason), Christian Nationalists actually think Trump wants to help them in their goal to repeal our First Amendment freedom of religion protections, in order to establish a Christian Nation. THAT is the real question. Because if he supports the Jan 6th Insurrection, he should recuse himself from hearing cases relating Jan 6 cases, Presidential immunity claims, and cases relating to Trump's antics towards overturning election, such as submitting counterfeit elector certificates to the Vice-President to "count," in the Capitol, instead of the authentic certified ones. ALITO is supposed to be free from conflicts-of-interest. If he's NOT, he's supposed to recuse himself from such cases.
      Look, the swastika flag used to mean something else too. you know! It USED to mean "good fortune" in Tibet. It does not matter what a symbol used to mean, hundreds of years ago, once it has been re-appropriated. What matters now is what that symbol CURRENTLY means now. We need to be alert to the changing meanings of symbols and what they represent.

      ***********************************************************************************

    This man who thinks he knows it all must go read and study his bible led by Holy Spirit not only based on some man made theological stuff. An appeal to heaven from earth can be interpreted as a deep cry for a Father's help to bring divine intervention in things that we man cannot change in our own strength. It is not political. It is not anti whatever...it is for those who have built a strong relationship with God as His friends to seek His help and intervention. It's not a religious thing neither but more of a close relationship and intimacy with God to partner with Him in the things of earth. Yes the sons and daughters of God are called to sit on the 7 mountains of Influence and to take same back after they have been in wrong hands. Else the world would be already in a better shape. All this is scriptural and known to those who are Spirit filled. There is lots of deception out there and so many wrong voices to express themselves on various platforms to deceive the masses who have not read and studied their bibles...how much I pray that the people of God will stand firm in their faith. How much I pray for even this man to be touched by heaven - the hands of God for his eye and ears to be opened to the truth. It is written that in the end time God's people will be persecuted for their faith and it's what we are seeing already...May God shows us mercy and hear our appeal from earth to heaven in Jesus name I pray.
